Book Environmental Technology Verification Report

Download or read book Environmental Technology Verification Report written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bruker-Franzen EM640 GC/MS consists of a temperature-programmable gas chromatograph coupled to a mass spectrometer. The field transportable system used a small gas chromatographic column and accompanying mass spectrometer to provide separation, identification, and quantification of volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds in soils, liquids, and gases. In the demonstration, the system used a spray-and-trap technique for water analysis, as well as direct injection and head space analysis for soil gas and soil analyses, respectively. The column enables separation of individual analytes in complex mixtures. As these individual analytes exit the column, the mass spectrometer detects the analytes, providing a characteristic mass spectrum that identifies each compound. An external computer system provides quantitation by comparison of detector response with a calibration table constructed from standards of known concentration. The system provides very low detection limits for a wide range of volatile and semi-volatile organic contaminants.

Book Field Gas Chromatography thermionic Detector System for On site Determination of Explosives in Soils

Download or read book Field Gas Chromatography thermionic Detector System for On site Determination of Explosives in Soils written by Alan Dole Hewitt and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On-site determination of nitroaromatic, nitramine, and nitrate ester explosives compounds in soils was performed using a field-portable gas chromatograph (GC)equipped with a thermionic ionization detector (TID)selective for compounds with nitro functional groups. Soil samples were extracted with acetone. A 1 microliter volume of the filtered soil extract was manually injected into the GC, allowing for the rapid qualification and quantification of the suite of explosives that often coexist in soils at military training facilities and other defense-related sites. Good agreement was established for the concentrations of several explosives analytes when this method of analysis was compared to either high-performance liquid chromatography (Method 8330)or GC electron capture (Method 8095)analysis. Comparisons were performed for sample extracts and for soil subsample replicates distributed for on-site preparation and analysis during a field verification test performed under the auspices of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Environmental Technology Verification (ETV)Program.

Book Environmental Technology Verification Report

Download or read book Environmental Technology Verification Report written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Viking SpectraTrak (Trademark) 672 GC/MS is an integrated system combining a temperature programmable gas chromatograph combined with a Hewlett Packard quadrupole mass spectromoter. This self-contained, field transportable system, whose design has been adapted from laboratory technology, uses a contained, chromatographic column and accompanying mass spectrometer to provide separation, identification, and quantification of volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds in sample matrices that include soil, liquid, and gas. The column enables the separation of individual analytes in complex mixtures. A mass spectrum, produced for each compound in the sample, can be used for compound identification and quantification. An integrated computer and data acquisition system enables identification and quantification of the analytes by comparison of detector response with a calibration table constructed from standards of known concentration. The system provides detection limits that range from about 5 ppm for direct gas injection to as low as 5 ppb for many volatile and semi-volatile organic contaminants in soils and liquids.

Book Portable Gas Chromatograph mass Spectrometer

Download or read book Portable Gas Chromatograph mass Spectrometer written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer (GC-MS) for use as a field portable organic chemical analysis instrument. The GC-MS is designed to be contained in a standard size suitcase, weighs less than 70 pounds, and requires less than 600 watts of electrical power at peak power (all systems on). The GC-MS includes: a conduction heated, forced air cooled small bore capillary gas chromatograph, a small injector assembly, a self-contained ion/sorption pump vacuum system, a hydrogen supply, a dual computer system used to control the hardware and acquire spectrum data, and operational software used to control the pumping system and the gas chromatograph. This instrument incorporates a modified commercial quadrupole mass spectrometer to achieve the instrument sensitivity and mass resolution characteristic of laboratory bench top units.

Book A Small Portable Gas Chromatograph quadrupole Mass Spectrometer for On site Analysis

Download or read book A Small Portable Gas Chromatograph quadrupole Mass Spectrometer for On site Analysis written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) is the analytical tool of choice for the exact identification of unknown organic chemicals in environmental samples. Capillary gas chromatography, combined with the specific identification capabilities of mass spectrometry, allows the rapid and complete characterization of individual compounds in complex mixtures. As the technology has developed, many manufacturers have offered bench-top MS systems that provide a variety of analytical capabilities. Many instruments have been promoted as ''detectors for gas chromatography.'' More recently, manufacturers have offered integrated packages that can be transported to the field to provide analytical capabilities previously available only in the laboratory. The demonstrated field utility of these field-transportable units has triggered an interest in smaller, lighter weight, and more portable instruments. However, the current weight (>100 lb), large size, and laboratory-based power consumption requirements of these units is viewed as a liability by some potential field instrument users. Over the past several years, the interest in field-deployable instruments has resulted in research and development into smaller GC-MS systems designed with limited applications. While the development of these instruments is certainly worthwhile, a reliable and robust GC-MS instrument that clearly addresses the field-deployable needs for all environmental sampling and analysis would have considerable utility. We have developed portable instruments with analytical performance characteristics similar to those obtained with bench-top instruments. The current instrument, developed at LLNL and described here, was originally designed for use by on-site inspection teams supporting the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC). The portability and expanded capabilities of this integrated instrument now make it a useful tool for environmental monitoring and on-site analysis studies.
