Book Mass Vaccination Global Aspects Progress and Obstacles

Download or read book Mass Vaccination Global Aspects Progress and Obstacles written by Stanley A. Plotkin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-09-21 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mass immunization is the blitzkrieg of vaccination practice. It serves to rapidly protect populations, both because of the high coverage achieved and because of the herd immunity thereby induced. However, as in war, mass immunization campaigns must be conducted intelligently, with careful strategy and strong attention to logistics of supply and deployment. If conducted badly, mass immunization may fail or even be counter-productive. In this volume, some of the most successful practitioners of mass im- nization tell us about its art and science. David Heymann and Bruce Aylward of WHO begin the book with a theoretical and practical overview of mass immunization. Michael Lane, who participated in the successful effort to eradicate smallpox relates how this was done using mass vaccination and other strategies. Application of mass immunization by the US military is c- ered by John Grabenstein and Remington Nevin, who have a large experience in these matters. Karen Noakes and David Salisbury recount the striking s- cesses of mass immunization in the United Kingdom. The global control of the clostridia that produce diphtheria toxin is described by Charles Vitek. Hepa- tis A is decreasing dramatically under the impact of large-scale vaccination, as Francis André illustrates. The French experience with Hepatitis B vac- nation has been mixed, and François Denis and Daniel Levy-Bruhl explain the circumstances. In?uenza vaccination is an annual example of large-scale campaigns, the complexity of which is recounted by Benjamin Schwartz and Pascale Wortley.

Book Disease Control Priorities Third Edition Volume 2

Download or read book Disease Control Priorities Third Edition Volume 2 written by Robert Black and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2016-04-11 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The evaluation of reproductive, maternal, newborn, and child health (RMNCH) by the Disease Control Priorities, Third Edition (DCP3) focuses on maternal conditions, childhood illness, and malnutrition. Specifically, the chapters address acute illness and undernutrition in children, principally under age 5. It also covers maternal mortality, morbidity, stillbirth, and influences to pregnancy and pre-pregnancy. Volume 3 focuses on developments since the publication of DCP2 and will also include the transition to older childhood, in particular, the overlap and commonality with the child development volume. The DCP3 evaluation of these conditions produced three key findings: 1. There is significant difficulty in measuring the burden of key conditions such as unintended pregnancy, unsafe abortion, nonsexually transmitted infections, infertility, and violence against women. 2. Investments in the continuum of care can have significant returns for improved and equitable access, health, poverty, and health systems. 3. There is a large difference in how RMNCH conditions affect different income groups; investments in RMNCH can lessen the disparity in terms of both health and financial risk.

Book Saving the Child

    Book Details:

  • Publisher : University of Iceland Press
  • Release : 2002
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 288 pages

Download or read book Saving the Child written by Ólöf Garðarsdóttir and published by University of Iceland Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the first half of the nineteenth century, infant morality in Iceland was considerably higher than in most other European counties. In fact, levels of infant mortality on this European periphery were comparable only with a few regions in central and northern Europe, all known for a tradition of artificial feeding of newborns or weaning in the first weeks of life. Iceland was not only unique for its high levels of infant mortality. The pace of decline, which came in the late nineteenth century, was even more striking. Thus, by the beginning of the twentieth century, infant survival in Iceland ranked among the best in the world. This book narrates the story of the struggle for improving survival chances for Icelandic children. It focuses mainly on the agents of change - most important of whom were the local midwives.
