Book Field Management of Hot Mix Asphalt Volumetric Properties

Download or read book Field Management of Hot Mix Asphalt Volumetric Properties written by JA. D'Angelo and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Demonstration Project No. 74 has clearly shown that significant differences exist between the volumetric properties of the laboratory designed and plant produced hot mix asphalt (HMA) mixes. The volumetric properties include voids in the mineral aggregate (VMA) and the voids in the total mix (VTM). This project was undertaken to develop practical guidelines for the HMA contractors to reconcile these differences thereby assisting them to consistently produce high quality HMA mixes. The HMA mix design and field test data from 24 FHWA demonstration projects were entered into a database. The data included mix composition (asphalt content and gradation) and volumetric properties. The data were analyzed to identify and, if possible, quantify the independent variables (such as asphalt content and the percentages of material passing No. 200 and other sieves) significantly affecting the dependent variables (such as VMA and VTM).

Book Field Management of Asphalt Concrete Mixes

Download or read book Field Management of Asphalt Concrete Mixes written by C. S. Hughes and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marshall properties were determined on mixes from three different contractors each producing a 1/2-in and a 3/4-in top-sized aggregate mix. From these data, statistical analyses were made to determine differences among contractors and between mix types. The data were analyzed to develop tolerances that could be used in a performance related specification. A suggested specification including risk factors, OC curve, and pay factor schedule are included.

Book An Alternate Method to Determine Asphalt Content of Hot Mix Asphalt Using Volumetric Properties

Download or read book An Alternate Method to Determine Asphalt Content of Hot Mix Asphalt Using Volumetric Properties written by M. S. Shaheed and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accurate determination of asphalt content (AC) in hot mix asphalt (HMA) is essential to evaluate the performance characteristics of HMA pavements. The standard test methods for determining the AC, currently used by the Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) and other DOTs and asphalt industries, are time-consuming, environmentally unsuitable, and not applicable to several absorptive and dolomitic aggregates. This study has developed a systematic method for the determination of AC using volumetric properties of aggregate, asphalt, and HMA mix. The developed method employed the theoretical maximum specific gravity (Gmm) of an HMA mix, the bulk and apparent specific gravity of the aggregate (Gsb and Gsa), and the specific gravity of the asphalt binder (Gb). The CoreLokTM device is used to determine the volumetric properties of the aggregate and HMA mix. This developed method is easy to use, environmentally safe, time efficient, and accurate. Three different aggregates were selected for the study based on varying gradation, absorption, and ignition oven correction (IOC) factor. HMA mixes were prepared with each of these aggregates using 5.0 %, 5.5 %, and 6.0 % AC. For each of the mixes, AC was calculated using the proposed method and compared with the actual AC value. The predicted AC values were compared with AC values from the ignition oven method (AASHTO T 308) and the solvent extraction method (AASHTO T 164). Results showed that the proposed method predicted the AC of HMA mix accurately. The method introduces a correction factor (Cv), which needs to be determined during the design stage and specified on the mix design information. The Cv value is used to calculate AC by the proposed method during quality assurance and quality control at the production and service life of HMA.

Book Determination of the In place Hot mix Asphalt Layer Modulus for Rehabilitation Projects Using a Mechanistic empirical Procedure

Download or read book Determination of the In place Hot mix Asphalt Layer Modulus for Rehabilitation Projects Using a Mechanistic empirical Procedure written by Amara Loulizi and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project evaluated the procedures proposed by the Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG) to characterize existing hot-mix asphalt (HMA) layers for rehabilitation purposes. Thirty-three cores were extracted from nine sites in Virginia to measure their dynamic moduli in the lab. Falling-weight deflectometer (FWD) testing was performed at the sites because the backcalculated moduli are needed for the Level 1 procedure. The resilient modulus was also measured in the lab because it is needed for the Level 2 procedure. A visual pavement rating was performed based on pavement condition because it is needed for the Level 3 procedure. The selected cores were tested for their bulk densities (Gmb) using the AASHTO T166 procedure and then for their dynamic modulus in accordance with the AASHTO TP62-03 standard test method. Then the cores were broken down and tested for their maximum theoretical specific gravity (Gmm) using the AASHTO T-209 procedure. Finally an ignition test was performed to find the percentage of binder and to reclaim the aggregate for gradation analysis. Volumetric properties were then calculated and used as input for the Witczak dynamic modulus prediction equations to find what the MEPDG calls the undamaged master curve of the HMA layer. The FWD data, resilient modulus data, and pavement rating were used to find the damaged master curve of the HMA layer as suggested for input Levels 1, 2, and 3, respectively. It was found that the resilient modulus data needed for a Level 2 type of analysis do not represent the entire HMA layer thickness, and therefore it was recommended that this analysis should not be performed by VDOT when implementing the design guide. The use of Level 1 data is recommended because FWD testing appears to be the only procedure investigated that can measure the overall condition of the entire HMA layer.

Although it can be useful to know about special designs for specific purposes, experience suggests that a particular design can rarely be used directly. It needs adaptation to accommodate the circumstances of the experiment. Successful designs depend upon adapting general theoretical principles to the spec
