Book excerpt: Since the 1970s, research projects and field studies have been conducted on different methods for protecting reinforced concrete bridges from corrosion damage. The methods include alternative reinforcement and slab design, barrier methods, electrochemical methods, and corrosion inhibitors. Each method and its underlying principles are described, performance results of laboratory and/or field trials are reviewed, and systems are evaluated based on the results of the trials. Using performance results from the studies and costs obtained from transportation agencies, an economic analysis is used to estimate the cost of each system over a 75-year economic life using discount rates of 2%, 4% and 6%.

Book excerpt: Chloride-induced corrosion of the reinforcing steel in bridge decks can impair its structural integrity and cause spalling, which reduces the ride quality of the deck. One system to prevent corrosion involves the use of corrosion inhibitors in freshly mixed concrete. This study evaluates the properties of field concretes containing the inhibitor, DCI (calcium nitrite) and assesses their field performance over a 3-year period. Comparative tests were made on a two-span bridge, one span of which had epoxy coated bars with regular concrete and the other uncoated bars with concretes containing DCI. The results indicate that the properties of the hardened concretes containing DCI were satisfactory and similar to those of the regular concretes. A conclusion on the effectiveness of DCI was not reached because of the limited time available; consequently, a follow-up evaluation is recommended. At present, the continued use of epoxy-coated reinforcing steel is recommended.

Book excerpt: The overall objective of this work in progress is to assess the effectiveness of corrosion inhibitors for steel in concrete. Three commercially available inhibitors, DCI-S (calcium nitrite-based), and FerroGard 901 and Rheocrete 222+ (both based on organic compounds), were selected for detailed examination. To determine the amount of inhibitor remaining in concrete, an accurate method to analyze for calcium nitrite was developed, and analyses for the other two inhibitors are being explored. The ability of calcium nitrite to stay in place was examined by laboratory experiments of inhibitor diffusion in concrete and by examination of available concrete samples exposed for long times to the outdoors environment.
