Book Field Evaluation of Hopper Dredge Overflow for the Delaware River

Download or read book Field Evaluation of Hopper Dredge Overflow for the Delaware River written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hopper dredges are often loaded past the point of overflow for economic reasons. As the hopper is filled, dredged material is stored in the hopper until overflow begins. The density of the hopper contents is increased by allowing the low-density supernatant to overflow back into the waterway. As the low-density supernatant overflows, the average density of the hopper contents increases. Thus, more material can be transported per trip to the disposal site or facility resulting in an economical loading. There is normally a tradeoff between the potential economic benefits and potential environmental effects. Overflow results in increased water column turbidity, and supernatant solids may be redeposited near the dredge site. Also, if sediments are contaminated, the overflow may result in some release of contaminants to the water column. Therefore, the relationship between dredge production, density of the hopper load, and the rate of material overflow are important variables in maximizing the efficiency of the dredging operation while minimizing harmful contaminant release.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hopper dredges are designed to vacuum material from the sea floor through drag arms that load the material into the hold of the vessel. The cargo of mud, or sand, can then be transported to either an ocean disposal site, where the material is dropped to the bottom through openings in the bottom of the hull, or at an upland site such as a beach, or reclamation, where the material is pumped ashore by the ship. This method is most suited when excavating loose material from open areas for delivery to a distant disposal location. These vessels are generally certified to sail in coastal or ocean waters and are suited for working in rougher sea conditions beyond those suitable for other dredging plants.

Book Disposal of Dredge Spoil

Download or read book Disposal of Dredge Spoil written by Marden B. Boyd and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report presents an assessment of the dredge spoil disposal problem and outlines a research program designed to provide needed information concerning current and potential spoil disposal practices. The report format is intended to reflect the two basic objectives of the report. Section A is directed toward management level review and presents (a) pertinent background information concerning the dredge spoil disposal problem and the current study, (b) conclusions and recommendations resulting from the problem assessment phase of the study, and (c) an outline of the recommended research program. Section B provides an objective assessment of the nationwide problem in sufficient detail to permit meaningful technical review by other interested personnel within and outside the Corps. Section C has been included to show a total-problem organizational structure which is being used to guide the development of the detailed research plan.

Book Dredging Operations Technical Support Program Engineering Design and Environmental Assessment of Dredged Material Overflow from Hydraulically Filled Hopper Barges in Mobile Bay Alabama

Download or read book Dredging Operations Technical Support Program Engineering Design and Environmental Assessment of Dredged Material Overflow from Hydraulically Filled Hopper Barges in Mobile Bay Alabama written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Barge overflow was investigated as a cost-effective option for future dredging needs in Mobile Bay, Alabama. Tests of hopper barge loading characteristics with overflow operations were conducted in Mobile Bay. In theory, overflow would allow denser materials to settle within the barge while less dense materials were shunted overboard. Increased density of barge-held materials would then translate to cost savings via a reduced requirement for transport to a distant approved disposal site. Thus, one major objective of the study was an engineering evaluation of equipment performance during the tests. A second major objective was to obtain field data for an assessment of the environmental consequences of overflow. In support of both objectives, modeling studies were performed to simulate overflows that would be associated with routine dredging operations. Eight separate tests were conducted. Three tests occurred at a site in lower Mobile Bay, and five tests at an upper bay site. Three tests (one lower bay, two upper bay) involved dredging in maintenance materials, and five tests (two lower bay, three upper bay) involved new work or deepening materials.

This book was released on 1992 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is common practice to fill beyond overflow on dredge hoppers and scows to achieve load gains. However, some of the US Army Corps of Engineers Districts do not permit overflow due to actual or perceived environmental or economic reasons. It is generally not known whether overflowing is beneficial in increasing the hopper payload in fine-grained sediments (silt and clay size), although some studies have indicated a minimal increase in hopper loads when filled to overflowing. Under the Dredging Research Program (DRP) Work Unit, Technology for Monitoring and Increasing Dredge Payload for Fine-Grained Sediments, several experimental methods were investigated to determine their effect on increasing the payload of fine-grained dredged material. Several devices were tested in a scale model hopper constructed at the US Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station Hydraulics Laboratory. These devices included three types of hydrocyclones (centrifugal separators), various diffuser designs, and different arrays of internally mounted inclined plates. A solids concentrator device was also evaluated for increasing the load of fine sediments in the model hopper. This report presents the description and method of the testing programs and the study findings. The inclined plate and solids concentrator devices demonstrated some level of success when tested with silt-sized materials (particle size 10 to 63 microns)., The inclined plate method was the most successful for increasing payload in the model hopper; however, prototype use of this technique could substantially increase the weight of a hopper dredge unless a lightweight version is developed.
