Book Examining the Interactions of Alfalfa Varieties and Deficit Irrigation Strategies Under Subsurface Drip Irrigation

This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alfalfa producers in many irrigated regions must develop strategies to maximize water productivity (kg/ha per mm of water), given the reality of water supply variations caused by periodic droughts, environmental regulations, or water transfers to cities, to transfer to other crops, or for environmental needs. Climate variability and change further exacerbates these uncertainties. Partial yields may be feasible for alfalfa under deficit irrigation, unlike other crops where complete failure is likely, or fallowing is required. Summer deficit irrigation or mid-season water cut-off utilizing irrigation systems with greater efficiency, such as subsurface drip irrigation (SDI) may be practical solutions to easing seasonal water supply fluctuations and restrictions. Breeders have developed cultivars with putative drought tolerance which could play an important role in a future with unreliable water supply. The objective of this research was to determine the possible interaction between cultivar and deficit irrigation when water was applied using SDI technology. Fifteen commercial or newly released alfalfa cultivars were established in fall 2014 at Davis, CA using a split plot design with four replications with four different irrigation regimes utilizing SDI. Irrigation treatments were: 1) Applications of the full water requirements of the crop -100% of seasonal ET[subscript c], supplied 2) 75% of seasonal ET[subscript c] with an August cutoff, 3) 75% of seasonal ET[subscript c], -fully irrigated to 50% of seasonal ET[subscript c], then 1⁄2 of full ET[subscript c] supplied for the remainder of the season, and 4) 50% of ET[subscript c] –with a July cutoff. Over three years of data collection (2015-2017), yields averaged 80% of fully-irrigated plots when receiving 50% water application and averaged of 96% of the fully-watered yields at 75% of water applications to fully match ET[subscript c]. The results showed that varieties differed significantly in yield potential (P

Book An Investigation of Surface and Subsurface Flow Characteristics During an Alfalfa Irrigation Event

This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this study was to minimize the tail discharge and estimate deep percolation in a flood irrigated alfalfa check through theoretical and experimental investigation of surface and subsurface flow characteristics, respectively. For this purpose, two models were developed - one for the development of a cutoff irrigation strategy by monitoring wetting front advancement in a flood irrigated alfalfa check and the other for determining soil hydraulic properties using an inverse solution technique. Moreover, field tests were conducted to verify the cutoff irrigation strategy and obtain soil moisture data to implement the inverse solution technique. The model based cutoff irrigation strategy used a sensor controlled cellular communication system. For this purpose, a low cost water arrival sensor was designed and developed to monitor the wetting front advance along a check. The task of the model was to predict the wetting front advance rate so that the irrigation cutoff time (i.e., wetting front arrival time at the cutoff point) could be predicted. In order to accomplish this task, tests were conducted during 18 irrigation events (5 conventional plus 13 cutoff) in four alfalfa checks (all 15 m X 220 m) in 2008 and 2009 alfalfa growing seasons. The set of water arrival sensors detected the wetting front advance rate and the model that relates wetting front advance rate to the arrival of wetting front at the cutoff location in the field, determined exactly when to turn off the inflow. This information was transmitted to single or multiple cell-phone(s) of irrigator(s) through a novel cellular communication system developed to communicate the information collected and analyzed by the data acquisition system wirelessly in the form of short text messages (SMS). The experimental data fitted the wetting front advance rate model very well (R2> 0.90 for all of the cases) and the proposed cutoff irrigation strategy produced zero tail water drainage. The cutoff times estimated by the model were found to be quite accurate in all cases tested. To achieve the second objective, an inverse solution technique was developed in this study to determine saturated soil hydraulic conductivity (Ks̳) and the conductance of plant to water uptake (C) under field conditions using a 1-D water transport model. The soil moisture contents ([theta]) were measured at 12 locations and at several depths at each location within the root zone in two different alfalfa checks using access tubes (each 1.5 m deep) and a neutron moisture probe. The inverse solution process utilized the measured soil moisture conditions in the alfalfa checks between two successive irrigations. In this study, the soil water retention curve was assumed to be of the form described by van Genuchten. The moisture contents at upper (0.225 m) and lower (1.2 m) depths provided the boundary conditions (BCs) needed for the model. The moisture content readings immediately following the irrigation event (i.e., t = 0) were used as the initial condition (IC). The model was solved for assumed model parameters values (Ks̳ and C) and the resulting model predicted soil moisture data were used to develop a third order orthogonal response surface in these model parameters. This approach leads to a response surface corresponding to each depth and time that was not a part of either BCs or IC. Moreover, a multiple linear regression technique was used to empirically model experimental [theta] to create a smooth surface so that the experimental error would be minimized. The response surface solutions were then optimized against the empirical surface to seek the optimum values of Ks̳ and C. The moisture contents predicted by the inverse solution technique were found to be unique, robust and compared very well with the experimentally observed data (R2>0.95 and slope = 1:1 for most of the cases).

Book excerpt: In 2020, the Ogallala High Plains Aquifer supplied irrigation water for approximately 3.6 million hectares in Nebraska, making it the most irrigated state in the United States. Although Nebraska is highly dependent in groundwater, locations included in the Gering-Fort Laramie Irrigation District (border of Nebraska and Wyoming) rely on surface water resources. In addition to these conventional water sources, using non-conventional alternatives for crop production can be just as important during water shortage times such as the one that occurred in 2019 with the collapse of the Goshen/Gering-Fort Laramie Canal. Feedlot runoff presents a great opportunity in Nebraska, but it can become a point source pollution of pharmaceutical and personal care products, which could be accumulated in plant tissues and soil. In Chapter 1, we tested how passive air injection to the wastewater-fed SDI system could improve crop yield by increasing soil oxygen content at the root zone. Therefore, the objective of Chapter 1 was to evaluate the effect of air injection on corn and sugar beets yield when using feedlot runoff irrigation in SDI. Results have shown that passive air injection has been effective increasing soil oxygen content in shallow depth. Air injection did not affect sugar beet yield or sucrose content in any growing season, but significantly increased corn yield in the 2021 growing season. In Chapter 2, we evaluated the effects of air injection into subsurface drip irrigation on the soil microbial diversity and the residual of antibiotic residues accumulated in soil pore water, soil, and plant matrices. The objective of Chapter 2 was to evaluate the effects of air injection on the reduction of antibiotic concentrations in the soil environment introduced by irrigation with feedlot wastewater. Results have shown that air injection was not effective in removing or treating antibiotics such as sulfamethoxazole or monensin Na. However, in air-injected sugar beet or corn plots, some microbes had a significantly higher abundance than in non-air-injected plots, revealing potential benefits for crop production.
