Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Field Crops for the Cotton-Belt Climatic conditions in the cotton-belt states are markedly different, in many respects, from those in any other large area of the United States. For this reason the practices involved in the production of field crops in the cotton-belt present many modifications of those of other regions. In the preparation of this volume the author has endeavored to present clearly and accurately the science and art of field-crop production in the south. As the art of crop production is based primarily on the sciences of botany (physiological and ecological) and chemistry, the aim has been to give to these subjects their proper application. Although this book will be of much service to farmers and general readers, it has been written primarily with the needs of the college student in view. Considerable attention has been given to the principles of plant structure and nutrition, particularly with reference to cotton and corn, the two leading crops in the cotton-belt. The student who is unfamiliar with the crop and its life-processes is ill-prepared for a proper study of the tillage practices involved in the production of the crop. Book Cultivating Success in the South

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores changes in rural households of the Georgia Piedmont through the material culture of farmers as they transitioned from self-sufficiency to market dependence. The period between 1880 and 1910 was a time of dynamic change when Southern farmers struggled to reinvent their lives and livelihoods. Relying on primary documents, including probate inventories, tax lists, state and federal census data, and estate sale results, this study seeks to understand the variables that prompted farm households to assume greater risk in hopes of success as well as those factors that stood in the way of progress. While there are few projects of this type for the late nineteenth century, and fewer still for the New South, the findings challenge the notion of farmers as overly conservative consumers and call into question traditional views of conspicuous consumption as a key indicator of wealth and status.

Book Fertile Ground Narrow Choices

Download or read book Fertile Ground Narrow Choices written by Rebecca Sharpless and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2005-10-12 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rural women comprised the largest part of the adult population of Texas until 1940 and in the American South until 1960. On the cotton farms of Central Texas, women's labor was essential. In addition to working untold hours in the fields, women shouldered most family responsibilities: keeping house, sewing clothing, cultivating and cooking food, and bearing and raising children. But despite their contributions to the southern agricultural economy, rural women's stories have remained largely untold. Using oral history interviews and written memoirs, Rebecca Sharpless weaves a moving account of women's lives on Texas cotton farms. She examines how women from varying ethnic backgrounds--German, Czech, African American, Mexican, and Anglo-American--coped with difficult circumstances. The food they cooked, the houses they kept, the ways in which they balanced field work with housework, all yield insights into the twentieth-century South. And though rural women's lives were filled with routines, many of which were undone almost as soon as they were done, each of their actions was laden with importance, says Sharpless, for the welfare of a woman's entire family depended heavily upon her efforts.
