Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Field, Camp, Hospital and Prison in the Civil War, 1863-1865: Charles a Humphreys, Chaplain, Second Massachusetts Cavalry Volunteers I make no apology for printing this tale of the last two years of the Civil War even though another and greater war is engrossing the attention of the whole world. This greater war will soon end, and, as God lives, will end in the triumph of the right, and the nations will then be ready to enforce peace if any one should attempt to disturb it. My story will be in line with that great consummation. I feel so strongly that when war is seen in its true colors, it will not only lose all its allurements, but will excite a keener appreciation of the blessings of peace, that I think I could do no better service in the cause of peace than to present, as I intend, an unvarnished tale of war's scenes and labors, its trials and exposures. I shall weave them, in a measure, about my own personal experiences, but only so far as is necessary to present the various phases of war in definite outline and living reality. This book was released on 1918 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Humphreys' autobiography recounts his years as a Union cavalry soldier in the U.S. Civil War; his activity fighting, being wounded and eventually captured and imprisoned. The author's experiences were exciting and varied, shedding light upon contrasting aspects of the war which carry historical value. Elderly at the time when he published his recollections in 1918, Humphreys briefly reflects about the still-ensuing World War I, noting the value of revealing the exposures and trials war places upon everyone involved. It was in the spirit of remembering the hardships of conflict that this memoir was composed; that readers be mindful of the sacrifices and privations unique to war. Humphreys' recollections are eloquent, multifaceted and nuanced, giving visual impressions of the battlefields, weaponry, field tents, trenches, fortifications, and the general atmosphere a Civil War soldier experienced. Dramatic horseback pursuits and moments of action are accompanied by the emotional and spiritual aspects of warfare: Humphreys was a young chaplain whose duty was to counsel and assure his fellow fighters of God's presence. Altogether we find on these pages a lively yet sensitive and life-affirming account of a war pivotal to American history and the life of the nation.

Book excerpt: With three railroads and a canal passing through the city, Lynchburg, Virginia, was a major hospital center during the Civil War, far from the remote battlefields. A transit camp where Union soldiers remained before being paroled or transferred to another prison opened in June 1862 at the Fair Ground, just outside the city limits. Upon arrival, the sick and wounded were assigned to one of the 32 hospitals regardless of the uniform they wore. Union POWs who died were buried in the City Cemetery by the local funeral service, which also carefully recorded their personal data. Local ministers daily performed burial services for all soldiers, regardless of their race or the color of their uniforms, and all their expenses were paid by the Confederate government. This book presents the complete history of this Union POW camp in Lynchburg: the context of its founding, its operations, and its fate after the war. Two appendices present burial records for the POWs and Lynchburg Campaign casualties.
