Book Field and Laboratory Note Book in Physical Geography Classic Reprint

Download or read book Field and Laboratory Note Book in Physical Geography Classic Reprint written by F. A. Merrill and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Field and Laboratory Note Book in Physical Geography Professor Merrill adds a manual to the list that appears to fill a need in the schools arising from the fact that some of the manuals already published are too elementary and some are too far advanced. That is, some of them require too much purely mechanical work, giving the impression that the object is to occupy the hands of the pupil regardless of whether the exercise illustrates any principles or leads to any conclusions. The other class of manuals presumes too much on the previous knowledge and experience of the pupil for the early years of the school. This gap between the two kinds of manuals appears to be filled better by Professor Merrill's book than by any other that I have seen. It likewise is wider in its scope and covers the Whole field of Physical Geography more thoroughly than any other. It is a step in the right direction and I hope it may prove serviceable to all who use it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Field and Laboratory Note Book in Physical Geography Laboratory work in Physical Geography has for some years been in a transitional stage that is now approaching but has not yet reached a regular routine similar to that of the chemistry or physical laboratory. Many teachers have been working out a series of laboratory exercises for their own classes. Some of these that have proven more or less successful have been published as an aid to other teachers. Professor Merrill adds a manual to the list that appears to fill a need in the schools arising from the fact that some of the manuals already published are too elementary and some are too far advanced. That is, some of them require too much purely mechanical work, giving the impression that the object is to occupy the hands of the pupil regardless of whether the exercise illustrates any principles or leads to any conclusions. Book Laboratory Lessons in Physical Geography Classic Reprint

Download or read book Laboratory Lessons in Physical Geography Classic Reprint written by Lu Lester Everly and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Lessons in Physical Geography The exercises presented in this manual are intended to be sufficient for a full year's work, but they are so written that some may be omitted by classes that have not time for all, without detriment to those remaining. It is intended that the pages of questions and directions be bound with the answer papers in the notebook. In some exercises where the answers are short, blank spaces are left on the printed page that the answers may be written immediately after the questions. The loose leaf plan of binding gives Opportunity not only for the omission of exercises not needed, but also for the inser tion of such other exercises as any teacher may choose to give. To the same end, and also that the exercises may be taken in the order in which the topics are studied, the exercises are not numbered. Reference may be made to them by the page numbers at the bottom of the page. Pupils should pre serve all their papers, and at the end of the course arrange them in order, number the pages at the top, and write on the Table of Contents sheet (pp. 191, 192) the number, name, and pages of each exercise. The teacher will probably wish to examine and comment on each exercise as soon as it is done. The binding margin is a convenient place for marks, and also for the pupil's name, but the pupil must be careful not to let his writing run into this margin. Some of the exercises require heat, water, and considerable apparatus - not always to be had at each pupil's desk. It is suggested that such exercises be assigned, the day before they are to be done, to several pupils, who shall have the preparations complete, and perform the experiments in the presence of_the class. All members of the class should then write up the exercise. Most of the exercises have questions at the end called Advanced. These questions are usually more difficult than those preced ing, and are intended for the rapid workers who finish the main questions before the majority of the class are through. Book Field Laboratory and Library Manual in Physical Geography

Download or read book Field Laboratory and Library Manual in Physical Geography written by C. T. Wright and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Field, Laboratory, and Library Manual in Physical Geography In offering this manual to the public the author wishes to express the hope that it may prove helpful to his fellow-teachers, and that teachers and pupils alike may get from it at least a portion of the pleasure that he has taken in working out its exercises. The manual consists of readings and exercises selected from those which he has used in his own classes in the high school. He hopes that they may be of value in guiding others in their first attempts at scientific investigation and research. Physical geography gives the student a broader outlook than any other science in the curriculum of secondary schools. It is a proper culmination of the nature study of the grammar school, and an appropriate introduction to the more technical and rigid sciences of the high school. Its value arises in part from the fact that it touches nature in so many places. Its many sidedness and its alluring bypaths have tempted pupil and teacher alike. However enjoyable the physical side of it may be, it should not be forgotten that it is geography. Its greatest value arises from the fact that it introduces the student to his geographical environment and suggests to him how he may utilize it. Commerce, history, and even sociology have paid their tribute to this study. The intimate and necessary relation that exists between physical geography and history is the theme of more than one recent and valuable book. In this manual economic phases have been emphasized throughout. In using our eyes we sometimes forget that we may use the eyes of others to our great pleasure and profit. In our attempts to study geography at first hand there is a temptation to neglect the library. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Practical Physiography Classic Reprint

Download or read book Practical Physiography Classic Reprint written by Harold Wellman Fairbanks and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Physiography The last few years have withnessed important changes in the text-books pertaining to Physical Geography. The study of the world as a fixed model has given place to the study of a world whose physical features are undergoing continual change. This change is in turn seen to affect the climate and the life conditions of plants and animals, and to have an important influence upov the activities of men. The number of books treating the subject from this newer point of view has rapidly increased, and several of them are so excellent that there would appear to be scarcely room for another book covering the same ground in the same manner. It seems to the author, however, that the evolution of better methods of teaching Physical Geography is still going on. The student will never gain what he should from the study until the use of the text-book is supplemented, not by the indoor laboratory method, for that would take the life out of the subject, but by the study of nature itself in the great outdoor laboratory. It is not the amount of ground gone over; it is not what is memorized from a textbook; it is not watching experiments in the class room, which makes Physical Geography, or Physiography as we prefer to call it, of value in the high school. It is rather the gaining of an ability to understand the meaning of the phenomena of the land, the water, and the air, and the relation of all life to them. For this purpose nothing can take the place of excursions and the study of the real world. The author has tried to work out in the present volume a practical concrete treatment of the subject along these lines. The book is intended as an aid to study, not as a compendium of information. Consequently a description of the world as a whole is omitted. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Students Laboratory Manual of Physical Geography written by Albert Perry Brigham and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Students Laboratory Manual of Physical Geography The exercises in this manual follow the order of Gilbert and Brighams Introduction to Physical Geography, bearing, as in the Teachers Guide, corresponding section numbers. The figures mentioned belong to the Introduction, unless specified as found in the Manual. A few views and diagrams are here introduced as a basis for laboratory work. They supplement those of the text and may serve to test the value of such material for this use. About one hundred and thirty exercises are given, but it is not expected that any class will accomplish all of the work proposed. It is left for teachers to select according: to the material and time available. Other exercises might in many cases have been prepared, but the choice has been given to subjects whose illustration by maps or other means would require small expense. After a few added years of experience in the schools, we may hope to approach what might be called a standard series of exercises, though locality will always be a large factor, and will determine the subjects for work in the field. It is obvious also that the directions given for field studies must be of a general nature. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
