Book Field Analysis of Mercury in Water Sediment and Soil Using Static Headspace Analysis

Download or read book Field Analysis of Mercury in Water Sediment and Soil Using Static Headspace Analysis written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We developed a field screening method for rapid analysis of Hg in water, soil, and sediment, which can be applied cost-effectively at Hg-contaminated sites. Samples are chemically pretreated in ordinary containers, followed by analysis of the sample headspace Hg vapor using a portable commercial analyzer. Hg in water samples is reduced directly by the addition of stannous chloride, while solids are first digested with aqua regia or piranha solution to liberate the Hg from the solids. Aided by vigorous agitation after adding the reductant, the elemental Hg partitions between solution and headspace according to Henry's Law. The method requires about 2 and 15 minutes to complete for water and solids, respectively. The method provides very useful detection limits for water (0.1[mu]g/L) and solids (2-3[mu]g/g). Intercomparisons with laboratory-analyzed environmental samples show good agreement.

Book Field and Laboratory Methods Used by the Geological Survey of Canada in Geochemical Surveys

Download or read book Field and Laboratory Methods Used by the Geological Survey of Canada in Geochemical Surveys written by I. R. Jonasson and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Methods and equipment used by the Geochemistry Section, Geological Survey of Canada for the rapid, routine determination of mercury by cold vapour atomic absorption in various materials of geological interest, viz; rocks, soils, sediments, ores and waters, are described in detail. The range of mercury contents which can be covered for solid samples is 2 r'lg to 1000 ng Hg; i. e. 4 ng/g to 2000 ng/g for 0. 500 g samples. The useful range of concentration which can be covered for water samples, including snow, is 0. 01 ng/g to 2. 5 ng/g. Coefficients of variation (arithmetic) for all samples have been calculated. In the range of Hg content: 2-25 ng, CV is 25%; 50-100 ng, CV is 15%; 2150 ng, CV is 10% for example. Negative interferences by a number of metallic elements, in the chemical form in which they exist under the conditions of the method, have been quantitatively investigated. Au, Pd, Pt, Te at microgram levels, interfere significantly when precipitated in elemental form. Se, Cu and Ag which do not precipitate as metals, do not interfere, even at mg levels. Finely powdered sulphur, 215 mg, causes significant interference to the expected Hg signal. Because the levels at which most metals interfere are high relative to their natural abundances, only Te content is an important factor to be considered in routine geochemical analyses for mercury.

Book Organometallics in Environment and Toxicology

Download or read book Organometallics in Environment and Toxicology written by Astrid Sigel and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2015-07-24 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 7, devoted to the vital and rapidly expanding research area around metal-carbon bonds (see also MILS-6), focuses on the environment. With more than 2500 references, 35 tables, and nearly 50 illustrations, many of these in color, it is an essential resource for scientists working in the wide range from organometallic chemistry, inorganic biochemistry, environmental toxicology all the way through to physiology and medicine. In 14 stimulating chapters, written by 29 internationally recognized experts, Organometallics in Environment and Toxicology highlights in an authoritative and timely manner environmental cycles of elements involving organometal(loid) compounds as well as the analytical determination of such species. This book examines methane formation involving the nickel coenzyme F430, as well as the organometal(loid) compounds formed by tin, lead, arsenic, antimony, bismuth, selenium, tellurium, and mercury. In addition, it deals with the environmental bioindication, biomonitoring, and bioremediation of organometal(loid)s, and it terminates with methylated metal(loid) species occurring in humans by evaluating assumed and proven health effects caused by these compounds.
