Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Guide to Curriculum Mapping synthesizes teaching, learning, and assessment research with an innovative, inclusive, and comprehensive approach to effective curriculum design that centers student learning and evidence-informed continuous improvement. A Guide to Curriculum Mapping offers adaptable tools, resources, and templates that readers can customize to their own institutions and programs. The authors offer ways to document, synthesize, integrate, and visually represent how learning opportunities work together—whether within courses, across degree programs, or throughout an entire college or university. The authors have presented their integrated mapping approach to acclaim at conferences for close to a decade and have tested their use in programs large and small across the US, beyond systematically applying them at their home institution, the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). This book enables educators—whether faculty, chairs, deans, administrators, educational developers, staff, or assessment leaders concerned with student learning and success—to think through the clarity, organization, and alignment of their programs for improving learning using learner-centered research.

Book The Cayo Santiago Macaques

Download or read book The Cayo Santiago Macaques written by Richard G. Rawlins and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1986-01-01 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a broad spectrum of research on the Cayo Santiago macaques, a unique free-ranging colony of rhesus macaques in Puerto Rico. It includes thirteen scientific studies on the behavior and biology of the Cayo Santiago macaques, as well as a detailed history of the colony and a complete bibliography of over 260 scientific publications based on work at Cayo Santiago from 1938 through 1984. The chapters represent examples of both short- and long-term research conducted on the island over the past several years. Some are reviews, providing a synopsis of complex longitudinal studies of behavior, vocal communication, functional morphology, genetics, and population dynamics. Others document the results of opportunistic studies of behavior or biological surveys. The chapters cover a broad range of topics, but all share a common dependence on the detailed life history and genealogical data which make the Cayo Santiago macaque colony an important international research resource.

Book The Spanish Archives of New Mexico

Download or read book The Spanish Archives of New Mexico written by Ralph Emerson Twitchell and published by Sunstone Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 766 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In what follows can be found the doors to a house of words and stories. This house of words and stories is the Archive of New Mexico and the doors are each of the documents contained within it. Like any house, New Mexico's archive has a tale of its own origin and a complex history. Although its walls have changed many times, its doors and the encounters with those doors hold stories known and told and others not yet revealed. In the Archives, there are thousands of doors (4,481) that open to a time of kings and popes, of inquisition and revolution. "These archives," writes Ralph Emerson Twitchell, "are by far the most valuable and interesting of any in the Southwest." Many of these documents were given a number by Twitchell, small stickers that were appended to the first page of each document, an act of heresy to archivists and yet these stickers have now become part of the artifact. These are the doors that Ralph Emerson Twitchell opened at the dawn of the 20th century with a key that has served scholars, policy-makers, and activists for generations. In 1914 Twitchell published in two volumes The Spanish Archives of New Mexico, the first calendar and guide to the documents from the Spanish colonial period. Volume Two of the two volumes focuses on the Spanish Archives of New Mexico, Series II, or SANM II. These 3,087 documents consist of administrative, civil, military, and ecclesiastical records of the Spanish colonial government in New Mexico, 1621-1821. The materials span a broad range of subjects, revealing information about such topics as domestic relations, political intrigue, crime and punishment, material culture, the Camino Real, relations between Spanish settlers and indigenous peoples, the intrusion of Anglo-Americans, and the growing unrest that resulted in Mexico's independence from Spain in 1821. As is the case with Volume One, these documents tell many stories. They reflect, for example, the creation and maintenance of colonial society in New Mexico; itself founded upon the casting and construction of colonizing categories. Decisions made by popes, kings and viceroys thousands of miles away from New Mexico defined the lives of everyday citizens, as did the reports of governors and clergy sent back to their superiors. They represent the history of imperial power, conquest, and hegemony. Indeed, though the stories of indigenous people and women can be found in these documents, it may be fair to assume that not a single one of them was actually scripted by a woman or an American Indian during that time period. But there is another silence in this particular collection and series that is telling. Few pre-Revolt (1680) documents are contained in this collection. While the original colonial archive may well have contained thousands of documents that predate the European settlement of New Mexico in 1598, with the Pueblo Indian Revolt of 1680, all but four of those documents were destroyed. For historians, the tragedy cannot be calculated. Nevertheless, this absence and silence is important in its own right and is a part of the story, told and imagined. Let this effort and the key provided by Twitchell in his two volumes open the doors wide for knowledge to be useful today and tomorrow. --From the Foreword by Estevan Rael-Gálvez, New Mexico State Historian

Book The Alpha Males

    Book Details:
  • Author : W. Richard Dukelow
  • Publisher : Upa
  • Release : 1995
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 240 pages

Download or read book The Alpha Males written by W. Richard Dukelow and published by Upa. This book was released on 1995 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first history to be written of the early development of the U.S. Regional Primate Research Center Program. In this groundbreaking work, author Richard Dukelow shows that "the history is built around the characters of the men involved in the development of the program, rather than around each Primate Center." This focus on individuals allows the reader to gain a better understanding of the uniqueness of the program itself. Readers will benefit from the book's brief biographical approaches of the Directors. Directors from various Regional Centers are studied, including The University of Washington, Wisconsin, and California. Sections on "Early Negotiations" and epilogues are included in each biographical sketch. Dukelow's portrayal of scientific history makes The Alpha Males both intimate and rewarding. It will be of particular interest to those people in the fields of psychology and primatology, and those wanting to learn about the history of science or the development of national funded research programs.

Book No Ordinary War

Download or read book No Ordinary War written by Christian Prag and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2009-04-16 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: U-604 was a standard Type VIIC of which over 600 were built, and at first glance her six war patrols might seem typical - but they were far from ordinary.Using the official war diary and the eyewitness testimony of survivors this book weaves a detailed but vivid tapestry of life and action during some of the fiercest convoy battles of the Atlantic war. Often counter-attacked, but seeming to bear a charmed life, U-604 had her successes, including inflicting the largest single loss of US mercantile personnel in one attack. However, the drama of her career pales alongside the epic story of her loss. After repeated bombing by American aircraft, Hltring, the boat's CO, organised an amazing rescue attempt by two other U-boats and finally scuttled U-604. This rescue itself went badly wrong, leading to the loss of one more U-boat and Hltring's suicide in controversial circumstances. Based on interviews with survivors and illustrated with previously unpublished photos, it is simply an extraordinary story.

Book Bones Genetics and Behavior of Rhesus Macaques

Download or read book Bones Genetics and Behavior of Rhesus Macaques written by Qian Wang and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-11-09 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foreword by Phillip V. Tobias The introduction of rhesus macaques to Cayo Santiago, Puerto Rico in 1938, and the subsequent development of the CPRC for biomedical research, continues its long history of stimulating studies in physical anthropology. The CPRC monkey colonies, and the precise demographic data on the derived skeletal collection in the Center’s Laboratory of Primate Morphology and Genetics (LPMG), provide rare opportunities for morphological, developmental, functional, genetic, and behavioral studies across the life span of rhesus macaques as a species, and as a primate model for humans. The book grows out of a symposium Wang is organizing for the 78th annual meeting of the American Association of Physical Anthropologists to be held in April 2009. This symposium will highlight recent and ongoing research in, or related to, physical anthropology, and reveal the numerous research opportunities that still exist at this unusual rhesus facility. Following an initial historical review of CPRC and its research activities, this book will emphasize recent and current researches on growth, function, genetics, pathology, aging, and behavior, and the impact of these researches on our understanding of rhesus and human morphology, development, genetics, and behavior. Fourteen researchers will present recent and current studies on morphology, genetics, and behavior, with relevance to primate and human growth, health, and evolution. The book will include not only papers presented in the symposium, but also papers from individuals who could not present their work at the meeting due to limitations in the maximum number (14) of permitted speakers.
