Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mondavi, Martini, Sebastiani, Gallo, Bargetto and Perelli-Minetti. Who could deny the importance of Italians to the development of America’s wine industry? It is little known that Italians have been planting vineyards and making wine in America since the early colonial days when Filippo Mazzei was the vineyard consultant for Thomas Jefferson. Grapes were planted and nurtured in virtually every corner of America where Italians settled. Wine making was as sacrosanct as making bread or pasta. Here is the story of Italian immigrants whose descendants now dominate American wine making. How they struggled and endured. How they persisted in the face of Prohibition and facilitated legislation permitting home wine making of 200 gallons per family. The intrigue, the feuds, the love affairs and financial triumphs are all in this authenticated history from the earliest days of America to the new Italian/American wine makers.

Book Working Class Literature s

    Book Details:
  • Author : John Lennon
  • Publisher : Saint Philip Street Press
  • Release : 2020-10-09
  • ISBN : 9781013289538
  • Pages : 248 pages

Download or read book Working Class Literature s written by John Lennon and published by Saint Philip Street Press. This book was released on 2020-10-09 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The aim of this collection is to make possible the forging of a more robust, politically useful, and theoretically elaborate understanding of working-class literature(s). These essays map a substantial terrain: the history of working-class literature(s) in Russia/The Soviet Union, The USA, Finland, Sweden, The UK, and Mexico. Together they give a complex and comparative - albeit far from comprehensive - picture of working-class literature(s) from an international perspective, without losing sight of national specificities. By capturing a wide range of definitions and literatures, this collection gives a broad and rich picture of the many-facetted phenomenon of working-class literature(s), disrupts narrow understandings of the concept and phenomenon, as well as identifies and discusses some of the most important theoretical and historical questions brought to the fore by the study of this literature. If read as stand-alone chapters, each contribution gives an overview of the history and research of a particular nation's working-class literature. If read as an edited collection (which we hope you do), they contribute toward a more complex understanding of the global phenomenon of working-class literature(s)." Book Driving Forces

Book excerpt: THE DRIVER: Many forces drive us into the decisions we make: infidelity: new opportunity, chance meetings, rebel causes. Dr. Louise Hammel, an American-Australian, takes a job in Cagayan de Oro, Philippines, as a Regional Long-Term Advisor for an educational program called PROMES. Her assigned Filipino driver, Rico Bernales, becomes enamored with a Muslim widow whose uncle is the leader of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF). Rico is unwittingly drawn into the nefarious and dangerous underworld of the rebels. As the year progresses, Louise becomes more savvy in negotiating her way through complex issues of Filipino society: human relations, religion, education, culture and politics, but she is unable to help her driver with his personal entanglements. In the end, Louise must decide if she will return home to the USA leaving her driver to extricate himself from the vortex of impending dangers. BOOK REVIEWS Carol Fortino has woven an interesting tale, impressively detailed, melded with education, customs, culture and traditions of Catholic and Muslim Filipinos and the conflicts between them. The story is intertwined with romance, family conflict, betrayal, graft, subversion and disaster. The book illustrates a good comparison of the differences in cultures among the Philippines, Australia and America. Victor Moss, author of Beware the Wolves, a Soviet WWII Love Story (a potential Hollywood motion picture) a thoughtful fictionalized memoir of an American ex-pats life moving between the radically different cultures of Australia and the Philippines. The rich individuals of the book paint a raw rubbing of fundamentally different ways of conceiving the worldas well as the precariousness of life in a nation haunted by the mixed blessings of so-called modernity and a particularly fragile environment...a quick and thoroughly enjoyable read." Jim ODonnell, author of Notes for the Aurora Society and Rise and Go

Book New Queer Cinema

    Book Details:
  • Author : B. Ruby Rich
  • Publisher : Duke University Press
  • Release : 2013-03-26
  • ISBN : 0822399695
  • Pages : 353 pages

Download or read book New Queer Cinema written by B. Ruby Rich and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2013-03-26 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: B. Ruby Rich designated a brand new genre, the New Queer Cinema (NQC), in her groundbreaking article in the Village Voice in 1992. This movement in film and video was intensely political and aesthetically innovative, made possible by the debut of the camcorder, and driven initially by outrage over the unchecked spread of AIDS. The genre has grown to include an entire generation of queer artists, filmmakers, and activists. As a critic, curator, journalist, and scholar, Rich has been inextricably linked to the New Queer Cinema from its inception. This volume presents her new thoughts on the topic, as well as bringing together the best of her writing on the NQC. She follows this cinematic movement from its origins in the mid-1980s all the way to the present in essays and articles directed at a range of audiences, from readers of academic journals to popular glossies and weekly newspapers. She presents her insights into such NQC pioneers as Derek Jarman and Isaac Julien and investigates such celebrated films as Go Fish, Brokeback Mountain, Itty Bitty Titty Committee, and Milk. In addition to exploring less-known films and international cinemas (including Latin American and French films and videos), she documents the more recent incarnations of the NQC on screen, on the web, and in art galleries.
