Book Fidel Castro Reader

Download or read book Fidel Castro Reader written by Fidel Castro and published by Seven Stories Press. This book was released on 2024-09-17 with total page 691 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive anthology with more than 30 speeches that span five decades by Fidel Castro, one of history’s greatest orators. Emerging in the 1960s as a leading voice in support of anticolonial struggles, then continuing to play a role in the antiglobalization movement in the subsequent decades, Fidel Castro was an articulate and penetrating—if controversial—political thinker and leader, who outlasted ten US presidents. Covering five decades of Fidel’s speeches, this selection begins with his famous courtroom defense (“History will Absolve Me”), and also includes his speech on learning of Che Guevara’s death in Bolivia, his analysis of the collapse of the Soviet Union, and his response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks. With his declining health and the emergence of new leaders such as Hugo Chávez in Venezuela and Evo Morales in Bolivia, this book sheds light not just on Castro’s mighty role in Latin America’s past, but also on his legacy for the future. Love him or hate him, this anthology demonstrates that Fidel Castro is a “master of the spoken word,” as Gabriel García Márquez has described him. The Fidel Castro Reader includes a chronology of the Cuban Revolution, an extensive glossary and index as well as 24 pages of photos.

Book Imperialism in the Twenty First Century

Download or read book Imperialism in the Twenty First Century written by John Smith and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2016-01-22 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provides an examination of the relationship between the core capitalist countries and the rest of the world in the age of neoliberal globalization. Deploying a Marxist methodology, Smith begins by tracing the production of certain iconic commodities--the T-shirt, the cup of coffee, and the iPhone--and demonstrates how these generate enormous outflows of money from the countries of the Global South to transnational corporations headquartered in the core capitalist nations of the Global North. From there, Smith draws on his empirical findings to theorize the current shape of imperialism. He argues that the core capitalist countries need no longer rely on military force and colonialism (although these still occur) but increasingly are able to extract profits from workers in the Global South through market mechanisms and, by aggressively favoring places with lower wages, the phenomenon of labor arbitrage. --From publisher description.

Book The Americano

Download or read book The Americano written by Aran Shetterly and published by Algonquin Books. This book was released on 2007-08-10 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Why do I fight here in this land so foreign to my own? Why did I come here far from my home and family?...Is it because I seek adventure? No...I am here because I believe that the most important thing for free men to do is to protect the freedom of others." —William Morgan, in a letter to Herbert Matthews at the New York Times When William Morgan was twenty-two years old, he was working as a high school janitor in Toledo Ohio. Seven years later, in 1958, he walked into a Rebel camp in the Cuban Jungle to join the revolutionaries in their fight to overthrow the corrupt Cuban president, Fulgencio Batista. They were wary of the broad-shouldered, blond-haired, blue-eyed americano but Morgan's dedication and passion, his military skill and charisma, led him to become a chief comandante in Castro's army—he was the only foreigner to hold such a rank, with the exception of Che Guevera. Vicious battles in the jungles were followed by victorious revelry in the cities. Morgan married a Cuban beauty. He single-handedly thwarted the Dominican Republic's attempt to overthrow Castro. And he was chosen to work with Castro and other high ranking Rebels to improve the quality of life for all people. This man who had lived under the radar in America was now a Cuban hero on the watch lists of several governments, all of whom wondered whose side he was really on. It all ended in 1961, when, at age thirty-two, Morgan was executed by firing squad, at the hands of Fidel Castro. Journalist Aran Shetterly takes us back to an era when democracy could have flourished in Cuba. He interviewed Morgan's friends and family and former Cuban Rebels, and examined FBI and CIA documents in search of the truth. What emerged was the true story of a young man who had never fit in but finally found his place in the world by fighting another country's war.

Book Michael Christopher Brown Yo Soy Fidel

Download or read book Michael Christopher Brown Yo Soy Fidel written by Michael Christopher Brown and published by Damiani Limited. This book was released on 2018 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yo Soy Fidel follows the cortège of Fidel Castro, former Cuban revolutionary and politician, over a period of several days in late 2016. American photographer Michael Christopher Brown (born 1978) leaned out of a rear passenger window of his passing vehicle in order to photograph Cubans waiting alongside the highway for Fidel's military convoy, carrying his cremated remains from Havana to Santiago, to pass. The route mirrored Fidel's post-revolution journey from Santiago to Havana in 1959, which helped solidify his image as hero and legend. In Yo Soy Fidel, fragments of this initial image have survived his death though perhaps inevitably lead to a question of what is to come. A country largely seen for half a century as a symbol of dignity and hope in the fight against imperialism, Cuba has a choice: to stay true to Fidel's revolutionary path or embrace globalization and all it entails.

Download or read book The Global Cold War written by Odd Arne Westad and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-10-24 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cold War shaped the world we live in today - its politics, economics, and military affairs. This book shows how the globalization of the Cold War during the last century created the foundations for most of the key conflicts we see today, including the War on Terror. It focuses on how the Third World policies of the two twentieth-century superpowers - the United States and the Soviet Union - gave rise to resentments and resistance that in the end helped topple one superpower and still seriously challenge the other. Ranging from China to Indonesia, Iran, Ethiopia, Angola, Cuba, and Nicaragua, it provides a truly global perspective on the Cold War. And by exploring both the development of interventionist ideologies and the revolutionary movements that confronted interventions, the book links the past with the present in ways that no other major work on the Cold War era has succeeded in doing.
