Book Fiber Optics Communication Gain Enhancement of Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifier using Amplified Spontaneous Emission

Download or read book Fiber Optics Communication Gain Enhancement of Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifier using Amplified Spontaneous Emission written by Mohammad Yusuf and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2020-11-24 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2019 in the subject Instructor Plans: Computing / Data Processing / IT / Telecommunication, , course: M.Tech, language: English, abstract: With the evolvement of high speed and long-distance data communication systems, conventional band erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (C-EDFAs) are getting more attention in recent times. Major advantage of the C-band EDFA is that it provides the user to realize a system with wide bandwidth of 40 nm. But, from the reported works, it is evident that for Gain enhancement in C-band using EDFA is reported with the use of multiple stages, multiple pumps, Gain flattening filters etc. However, these techniques suffered from high cost, complex techniques, and low performance. Here enhancement process was done through the narrowband Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBG) or fiber reflectors mirrors. In this work, a conventional band erbium doped fiber amplifier is proposed with high gain and less noise figure by incorporating the two fiber bragg gratings (FBGs) for amplified spontaneous noise reinjection. Maximum ASE is emerged at 1565 nm for the at -55 dBm carrier powers. Maximum gain is found out to be 48.16 dB with noise figure of 5.29 dBm. Fiber amplifiers are crucial and fast-growing field in the communication system. The study of this field show that the formulation procedures of lasers generation and amplifier amplification displays a problematical process due to the factors affecting and changing amplifier and laser significances in a dynamic way. Gain, noise figure, wavelength, power flatness and power output are directly affected by any element or parameter inside the amplifier configuration. The design parameters such as: erbium ions concentration, EDF length, isolators, wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) position, pump power position, circulators, pump directions, all of these elements and factors are affecting directly the amplifier output. EDFA is an amplifier that is best used because of its low loss and high gain. For communication, there are two windows 1530-1560nm(C-band) and 1560-1610nm (L-band).

Book Development of Thulium Doped Fluoride Fiber Amplifiers

Download or read book Development of Thulium Doped Fluoride Fiber Amplifiers written by Marcin Michał Kożak and published by Cuvillier Verlag. This book was released on 2005-12-26 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis is related to the spectroscopic and optical properties of doped optical fibers used as a laser amplifier for short laser pulses at high repetition rates emitting around 2 μm. Therefore short pulses created by a laser diode are amplified in thulium-doped optical fibers combining the benefits of a direct electronic control of the laser diodes' parameters and the robust setup of an optical fiber system that can easily be integrated. After the development of a high-current pulse generator especially adapted to the 2 μm laser diodes used, pulses of > 7 ns with peak powers in the Watt range could be generated. Due to the modal behaviour of these laser diodes only 2 mW of peak power could be launched into a single-mode fiber. By comparing different fiber glasses, a heavy metal fluoride glass could be identified as the optimum host for the ions thulium and holmium emitting around 2 μm. Due to the development of a numerical simulation tool based on rate equations and radiation transport equations the fiber parameters such as core diameter, fiber length etc. could be optimized, minimizing the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) created inside the fiber. Based on this simulation a laser system consisting of cascaded fiber amplifiers could be realized. I emits short laser pulses (20-30 ns) at high repetition rates (up to 125 kHz) and peak powers of up to 5 kW. In contrast to Q-switched lasers the pulse width created is independent of the repetition rate. By using these pulses at 1.87 μm as an optical pump for a Cr2+:ZnSe laser, efficiencies of up to 22% could be reached at an emission wavelength of 2.5 μm.

Book Enhancement of the Optical Transmission System Utilizing a Dual function Remotely Pumped Erbium doped Fiber Amplifier

Download or read book Enhancement of the Optical Transmission System Utilizing a Dual function Remotely Pumped Erbium doped Fiber Amplifier written by Ahmed Wathik Naji Al-Kaissi and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optical fiber communication system is an active research area for its high demand especially in the long-haul communication system. A lot of work has been done to improve the optical transmission system (OTS) as a long-haul system using remotely-pumped Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifier (R-EDFA) and Distributed Raman Amplication (DRA). Despite these achievements, there is still room for enhancements and developments to solve the existing system's problems. This work presents a thorough research on OTS using hybrid R-EDFA and DRA approach. The research work includes gain enhancing technique under low pump powerm enhanced dispersion compensating technique, new R-EDFA location-optimization technique, and a figure of merit is introduced to determine the optimal setting of R-EDFA with respect to its practical applications (Post- and Pre-amplifier). Various designs for low pump R-EDFA configuration, in which a Chirped Fiber Bragg Grating (CFBG) is placed inside the R-EDFA configuration, is demonstrated in this research work. This configuration offers two functions at the same time, where it can achieve both double-pass amplification technique as well as dispersion compensating technique. A comparative analysis is conducted to compare the performance of the newly developed configuration with the conventional R-EDFA configurations, this configuration is found to give better performance compared to the conventional amplifier configurations, where a gain of 23 dB is achieved for input signal power of less than -35 dB at only 10 mW pump power. Since the location of R-EDFA has a high impact on the total transmission distance, a new technique is proposed to find the optimum location of R-EDFA, where a location close to the receiver is found to give a longer distance. In this research workm many configurations of OTS are developed and presented. A maximum transmission distance of 293 km is achieved using an optimized OTS which utilizes dual-function R-EDFA at 2.5 Gbps. A bit error rate (BER) ise used as the main performance parameter with a threshold value of better than 10-10. In addition to that, a mathematical modeling for this optimized configuration is carried out in this research work, which deals with the post- and pre-length of the system as well as the R-EDFA and DRA. Finally, in order to evaluate further the performance of the optimized configurations with respect to the previous systems, a new performance parameter called Pump Power Consumpstion (PPC) is introduced. This optimized OTS configuration has a better PPC (0.682 mW/km) compared to the previous OTS.

Book Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifier Spectral Behavior in Transoceanic Links

Download or read book Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifier Spectral Behavior in Transoceanic Links written by J. P. Blondel and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some experiments have already been presented for long haul transmission using in-line Erbium-Doped Fiber, Amplifiers (EDFA) 1,2. However, the question is to determine the actual system limitations for transoceanic links (up to 10,000 km), such as EDFA maximum output power, amplifier spacing, optical filter design. Some theoretical 3 and experimental 41 works have been published mainly with a recirculating loop. A specific problem is to predict the evolution of signal and Amplified Spontaneous Emission (ASE) powers along the link. To our knowledge, the calculations published so far have assumed that an optical filter was set after each amplifier. In this case, the cascaded EDFA behavior can be described by scalar values without spectral dependence, and an analytical calculation is possible. In order to predict the cascaded EDFA behavior in a more general case, spectral characteristics have to be considered, especially if there is no optical filter after each amplifier. The subject of this paper is to examine these specific aspects without taking into account the dispersive and non linear effects. Calculations for very long links are presented along with an experimental validation of the modeling.

Book A Low Noise Semiconductor Optical Amplifier

Download or read book A Low Noise Semiconductor Optical Amplifier written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optical amplifiers are essential devices for optical networks, optical systems, and computer communications. These amplifiers compensate for the inevitable optical loss in long-distance propagation (>50 km) or splitting (>10x). Fiber amplifiers such as the erbium-doped fiber amplifier have revolutionized the fiber-optics industry and are enjoying widespread use. Semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) are an alternative technology that complements the fiber amplifiers in cost and performance. One obstacle to the widespread use of SOAs is the severity of the inevitable noise output resulting from amplified spontaneous emission (ASE). Spectral filtering is often used to reduce ASE noise, but this constrains the source spectrally, and improvement is typically limited to about 10 dB. The extra components also add cost and complexity to the final assembly. The goal of this project was to analyze, design, and take significant steps toward the realization of an innovative, low-noise SOA based on the concept of ''distributed spatial filtering'' (DSF). In DSF, we alternate active SOA segments with passive free-space diffraction regions. Since spontaneous emission radiates equally in all directions, the free-space region lengthens the amplifier for a given length of gain region, narrowing the solid angle into which the spontaneous emission is amplified [1,2]. Our innovation is to use spatial filtering in a differential manner across many segments, thereby enhancing the effect when wave-optical effects are included [3]. The structure quickly and effectively strips the ASE into the higher-order modes, quenching the ASE gain relative to the signal.
