Book Characteristics of Extrinsic Fabry Perot Interferometric EFPI Fiber Optic Strain Gages

Download or read book Characteristics of Extrinsic Fabry Perot Interferometric EFPI Fiber Optic Strain Gages written by David A. Hare and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For years, resistance based strain sensors have been used for the measurement of strain. The resistance-type strain gage provides a very reliable and accurate measurement of strain, but as with any instrument it has its limitations. Extrinsic Fabry-Perot Interferometric (EFPI) fiber-optic strain sensors are now commercially available from several manufacturers. Fiber-optic strain gages have stated advantages over resistance based strain gages, including immunity to electromagnetic interference (EMI) and leakage to ground. This paper presents a limited performance comparison between the (Fabry-Perot type) fiber-optic strain gage and the traditional resistance strain gage. The evaluation was limited to load testing at room temperature and apparent strain characterization cryogenically and at elevated temperatures.

Book Strain and Temperature Measurement with Fiber Optic Sensors

Download or read book Strain and Temperature Measurement with Fiber Optic Sensors written by Regis J. Van Steenkiste and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1996-12-02 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FROM THE AUTHORS' PREFACE Sensors operating on interferometric principles and mounted inside optical fibers have recently been considered for measuring strain and temperature. Indeed, such sensors have successfully been employed for measuring pressure or temperature in fluids. Fiber optics sensors are especially adept for such measurements because sensors immersed in fluids can easily be calibrated by tests. Unfortunately, the use of fiber optic sensors inside solids is not as straightforward. Owing to the complex interactions between the sensor and the surrounding material, the relationship between the sensor output and the parameters of interest, namely the strain and temperature inside the material, cannot be determined by simple tests. And without the appropriate relationships, fiber optic sensors do not provide meaningful information. In general, the relationship providing the bridge between the sensor output and the engineering values of strain and temperature must be established via analytical models. The major aim of this book is to present such models for extrinsic and intrinsic Fabry-Perot sensors and for Bragg grating sensors embedded in or mounted on the surface of isotropic or anisotropic solids or immersed in fluids. The scope of the book is limited to the theory of fiber optic strain and temperature sensors. Accordingly, we have taken as our starting point the demodulated sensor signals. The hardware needed to produce these signals is not discussed. It is presumed that the reader is familiar with and has access to the sensor, light source, light detector and demodulator required for generating signals which can then be analyzed and interpreted by the methods presented in the book. The problem necessitates complex analytical developments. To assist the reader, the significant results are summarized in tables, and numerical examples are given illustrating the calculation procedures.

Book Laboratory Investigation on Fabry Perot Sensor and Conventional Extensometers for Strain Measurement in High Performance Concrete

Download or read book Laboratory Investigation on Fabry Perot Sensor and Conventional Extensometers for Strain Measurement in High Performance Concrete written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in fibre optic technology have made possible the installation of an extremely precise and reliable sensor in small structural members. Because of the high sensitivity and fast response of the sensor, low strain and dynamic strain can be measured. In this study a Fabry-Perot sensor was cast in a high performance concrete cylinder, which has been submitted to simple compression and thermal tests. These results were compared with measurements obtained using external linear variable differential transformers fixed on concrete samples having the same composition as the fibre optic instrumented concrete cylinder. Comparisons were also done with results from tests on concrete cylinders instrumented with embedment vibraring wire and electrical strain gauges. In addition, thermal tests were performed on the different concrete cylinders and samples in order to compare the behaviour of the different sensors in high performance concrete submitted to temperature variations. The results show that the concrete strains, measured with Fabry-Perot sensor are in agreement with strain measurements made on concrete samples. Consequently, the presence of the embeded fibre optic sensor does not influence greatly the mechanical properties of concrete. Furthermore, tor high stress levels (0.4 f'c) and rapid stress changes (0.25 MPa/s), the fibre optic senser measures with higher accuracy the strains of high performance concrete than the vibrating wire strain gauge.

Book Structural Monitoring with Fiber Optic Technology

Download or read book Structural Monitoring with Fiber Optic Technology written by Raymond M. Measures and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2001-04-10 with total page 736 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first to address the field of structurally integrated fiber optic sensors. Fiber optic sensors embedded within materials and systems are able to measure a variety of parameters (i.e. temperature, vibration, deformation, strain, etc.) that allows for real time non-destructive evaluation. Examples include the following: monitoring structural fatigue in aging aircraft or loads in bridge structures. In more advanced applications, fiber optic sensors control actuators that allow materials to adapt to their environment. This gives rise to the names, "smart," "intelligent," and/or "adaptive" materials or structures.Structural Monitoring with Fiber Optic Technology is the firs single author book on the new field of fiber optic structural sensing. As such it provides: coverage of the fundamentals of the technology, a coherent and systematic discussion on the most important aspects of the subject, a broad view of the subject, while retaining a degree of focus on those advances most significant in terms of their future potential, particularly in regard to broad implementation of the technology. The book provides an introduction to the relevant value to structural monitoring. It also highlights the advantages of fiber optic based sensors over conventional electrical measurement technology. The book richly illustrates the subject matter with 615 figures and provides many examples of fiber optic structural sensing, including a detailed overview of a number of major field site applications. Most of these large scale applications are drawn from the civil engineering community as they have been the first to strongly embrace fiber optic structural monitoring. This is especially true for bridges, where innovative new designs and the use of fiber reinforced polymer composite materials to replace steel represents a major advance that is expected to revolutionize the construction industry. Examples include new bridges, which are serving as testbeds for these new materials and are instrumented with arrays of fiber optic structural sensors. In one case, this state-of-the-art monitoring system permits engineers at a distant site to track the response of the bridge to traffic loads and keep an eye on the long term performance of the new materials. Fiber optic structural sensing technology is equally applicable to other industrial sectors, such as the aerospace and marine industries. Indeed, several examples of ships being instrumented with arrays of fiber optic sensors are also included.* The author directed one of the leading laboratories in the development of this technology and its application to civil engineering* Provides a strong, concise foundation in the basics of the technology* Includes many examples of the application of the technology, including many major field site case studies* Richly illustrated with 615 figures, many redrawn to make them easier to understand; also includes over 600 references* Written in a style designed to help the reader unfamiliar with fiber optic technology appreciate what can be accomplished with this new form of structural monitoring

Book Optical Fiber Sensor Technology

Download or read book Optical Fiber Sensor Technology written by L.S. Grattan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Systems and Applications in Optical Fiber Sensor Technology The essential technology which underpins developments in optical fiber sensors continues to expand, and continues to be driven to a very large extent by advances in optoelectronics which have been produced for the ever-expanding optical com munications systems and networks of the world. The steps forward in the technol ogy, often accompanied by a reduction in the price of associated components, have been, and continue to be, adapted for use in a wide variety of optical fiber sensor systems. These include, for example, the use of photoinduced gratings as fiber sensor components, coupled with the wider availability of shorter wavelength lasers, bright luminescent sources and high-sensitivity detectors which have opened up new possibilities for both novel fiber optic sensor applications and new sensing systems. This is to be welcomed at a time when, coupled with integrated optic miniaturized devices and detectors, real possibilities of systems integration, at lower cost and increased utility, can be offered. The fiber laser, and the expansions of the types and availability of the doped fiber on which it is based, offer further examples of the integration of the essential components of advanced optical sensor systems, fitted for a new range of applications.

Book Structural Health Monitoring Damage Detection Systems for Aerospace

Download or read book Structural Health Monitoring Damage Detection Systems for Aerospace written by Markus G. R. Sause and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book presents established methods of structural health monitoring (SHM) and discusses their technological merit in the current aerospace environment. While the aerospace industry aims for weight reduction to improve fuel efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and to decrease maintenance time and operating costs, aircraft structures are often designed and built heavier than required in order to accommodate unpredictable failure. A way to overcome this approach is the use of SHM systems to detect the presence of defects. This book covers all major contemporary aerospace-relevant SHM methods, from the basics of each method to the various defect types that SHM is required to detect to discussion of signal processing developments alongside considerations of aerospace safety requirements. It will be of interest to professionals in industry and academic researchers alike, as well as engineering students. Book Review of Progress in Quantitative Nondestructive Evaluation

Download or read book Review of Progress in Quantitative Nondestructive Evaluation written by Donald O. Thompson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 1124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this study was to increase the understanding of damage in composite materials with through-the-thickness reinforcements. As a first step it was necessary to develop new ultrasonic imaging technology to better assess internal damage of the composite. A useful ultrasonic imaging technique has been successfully developed to assess the internal damage of composite panels. The ultrasonic technique accurately determines the size of the internal damage. It was found that the ultrasonic imaging technique was better able to assess the damage in a composite panel with through-the-thickness reinforcements than by destructively sectioning the specimen and visual inspection under a microscope. Microscopic determination of crack location and lengths in a composite panel with through-the-thickness reinforcements was almost impossible. Five composite compression-after-impact panels were tested. The compression-after-impact strength of the panels with the through-the thickness reinforcements was almost twice that of the comparable panel without through-the-thickness reinforcement.
