This book was released on 1994 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In September 1993, a team of four government and state transportation association representatives made a two-week scanning trip to Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany to discuss and report on European experiences with intermodal freight transportation policies and systems. The objective was to observe and document information on European Community (EC) - sometimes referred to as European Union (EU) - methods and experiences in the planning and administration, system development, environmental compliance, financing, marketing, and operation of increasingly complex and capital-intensive intermodal freight systems and facilities. To the extent that such information was pertinent to the public and private sector transportation community in the United States, it would be documented in the form of a summary report.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Report 672: Roundabouts: An Informational Guide - Second Edition explores the planning, design, construction, maintenance, and operation of roundabouts. The report also addresses issues that may be useful in helping to explain the trade-offs associated with roundabouts. This report updates the U.S. Federal Highway Administration's Roundabouts: An Informational Guide, based on experience gained in the United States since that guide was published in 2000.

Download or read book Protocols for Collecting and Using Traffic Data in Bridge Design written by Bala Sivakumar and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2011 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Report 683: Protocols for Collecting and Using Traffic Data in Bridge Design explores a set of protocols and methodologies for using available recent truck traffic data to develop and calibrate vehicular loads for superstructure design, fatigue design, deck design, and design for overload permits. The protocols are geared to address the collection, processing, and use of national weigh-in-motion (WIM) data. The report also gives practical examples of implementing these protocols with recent national WIM data drawn from states/sites around the country with different traffic exposures, load spectra, and truck configurations. The material in this report will be of immediate interest to bridge engineers. This report replaces NCHRP Web-Only Document 135: Protocols for Collecting and Using Traffic Data in Bridge Design. Appendices A through F for NCHRP Report 683 are available only online.

Download or read book Evaluation of Some Existing Technologies for Vehicle Detection written by Dan R. Middleton and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most vehicle detection today relies on inductive loop detectors (ILDs). However, problems with installation and maintenance of these detectors have necessitated evaluation of alternative detection systems. Replacing ILDs with better detectors requires a thorough evaluation of the alternatives. This evaluation included examination of the functional quality, reliability, and cost of these technologies as well as development of recommendations for application. Primary detection technologies included in this study are video image detection systems (VIDS), passive infrared, active infrared, passive magnetic, radar, Doppler microwave, passive acoustic, and ILDs. Results of new detector testing clearly indicate promising alternatives to ILDs, but the limitations of these new detectors must also be accepted. Researchers found that some technologies performed quite well while, in some cases, offering features that are more flexible than ILDs. These technologies include VIDS, passive infrared, active infrared, radar, Doppler microwave, and pulse ultrasonic.
