Download or read book Neuroendocrinology written by Luciano Martini and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-03 with total page 797 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neuroendocrinology, Volume I, is the first in a two-volume treatise designed to provide a survey of all aspects of the rapidly expanding science of neuroendocrinology. Only in recent years have the relations between the nervous system and the endocrine system come under intensive scrutiny, but their interactions have already been shown to be multiple and diverse. This diversity is reflected in the range of subjects covered. There are chapters on neural control of endocrine function; the effects of hormones on the brain; brain-endocrine interrelations during various phases of development; and the comparative aspects of neuroendocrine integration. The relation of brain chemistry to endocrine function, the effect of drugs on neuroendocrine mechanisms, and the new discipline of clinical neuroendocrinology have also been considered. Not only neurophysiologists and endocrinologists, but pharmacologists, zoologists, biochemists, psychologists, and those in clinical medicine will find the treatise of interest. Parts of neuroendocrinology have been discussed in other works, but this is the first treatise in which an attempt has been made to cover all ramifications of neuroendocrinology. This book can be used both as a text for advanced students and as a reference source.

Book Joll s Diseases of the Thyroid Gland

Download or read book Joll s Diseases of the Thyroid Gland written by Francis F. Rundle and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joll's Diseases of the Thyroid Gland, Second Edition provides information pertinent to the fundamental aspects of thyroid diseases. This book discusses the physiology structure, and development of the thyroid gland. Organized into 29 chapters, this edition begins with an overview of the function of the thyroid gland to trap and concentrate iodine, harness it in organic combination, and then to secrete it into the blood. This text then discusses the evolutionary scheme showing the development of thyroid gland as a special organ for the control of iodine metabolism. Other chapters consider the various types of thyroid diseases, including simple goiter, acute inflammations, Grave's disease, and granulomatous diseases of the thyroid. This book discusses as well the etiological or clinico-pathological basis of the classification of simple goiter. The final chapter deals with the post-operative complications of thyroidectomy and their treatment. This book is a valuable resource for physicians, surgeons, and clinical researchers.

Book Mechanisms of Release of Biogenic Amines

Download or read book Mechanisms of Release of Biogenic Amines written by U. S. Von Euler and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-16 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wenner-Gren Center International Symposium Series, Volume 5: Mechanisms of Release of Biogenic Amines provides information pertinent to the fundamental aspects of the release of biogenic amines. This book discusses the physiology, biochemistry, and pharmacology of the biogenic amines. Organized into 39 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the release of amines, which is implicated in functional disturbances characteristic of different diseases. This text then examines the concepts of cell structure that are significant to the release of neurohumoral agents. Other chapters consider the fluorescence reaction, which made it possible to work out a practical histochemical procedure. This book describes as well a few examples in which the monoaminergic transmitter is not revealed as a diffuse cytoplasmic fluorescence. The final chapter deals with acetylcholine as the only brain amine investigated, which could be influenced by the tremorgenic agents during the period of tremor. This book is a valuable resource for biochemists, morphologists, pharmacologists, and physiologists.

Book Calcium and the Secretory Process

Download or read book Calcium and the Secretory Process written by Ronald Rubin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An enormous amount of research effort has been directed toward elucidating the mechanism by which substances are extruded from cells; and reviews have been written and symposia held in order to systematize the plethora of evidence made available. However, the approaches employed to study the secretory process have been so diverse that it is difficult, if not impossible, for one individual or even a group of individuals to keep abreast of all aspects of the field and to analyze them critically. Thus I undertook the writing of this volume with a great deal of trepidation. In searching for some starting point, I naturally considered as my primary focus the role of calcium in the secretory process, which has occupied my research interests for the past 13 years. But since so much experimentation has been carried out on this and related topics during the last decade or two, I felt it was still necessary to visualize this venture from two alternative ap proaches: (1) a more general one, which would cover the subject of calcium and the secretory process from a broad perspective, but of course not in great detail, and (2) a more specific one, restricting coverage to carefully defined limits but with comprehensive analysis of limited topics. The final course undertaken appears to lie somewhere between these two extremes.
