Its sources are inscriptions, mostly Sanskrit, that date from the seventh century to the end of the reign of the Imperial Ganga ruler, Anantavarman Codagangadeva (CE 1078-1147). The evidence indicates that royal and non-royal women had varying but undeniably important roles to play in the socio-political fabric of this prominent regional entity. The Bhauma-Kara dynasty (c. mid-eighth/ninth-late tenth century) that witnessed the rule of six women, four of them in succession, is a case in point. In addition, the palpable presence of several other royal and non-royal women is consistently documented in the epigraphic record. This is an aspect that has received very little attention in secondary works, thereby rendering this study a pioneering one. The work follows on from Rangachari’s earlier Invisible Women, Visible Histories: Gender, Polity and Society in North India (7th to 12th century ad), which had focused on important gendered aspects of early medieval north India through an analysis of literary and epigraphic sources of Kashmir, Kanauj, Bengal and Bihar. The invisibilization of women, whereby their presence is routinely ignored or trivialized, was, similarly, its underlying essence. It Was Followed By Uprisings In 1908 And 1911.The Strengthening Of The National Movement In The Twenties Gave Impetus To Another Popular Upsurge In Talcher In 1922, Which Was Again Suppressed. The Indomitable Zeal Of Talcher People Again Came To The Forefront During The Second Of 1930 S When The All Orissa States Peoples Conference Met In 1937 And Gave An Organised And Coordinated Shape To The Prajamandal Movements. To Oppose The Royal Pressure The People Of Talcher Took Recourse To A Unique Hizrat (Mass Exodus) Movement In 1938 In Thousands To Neighbouring British Ruled Territory. It Attracted The Attention Of Not Only Gandhiji, But The British M.P. Ms. Agatha Harrison, Who Visited Their Camps. During The Quit India Movement In 1942, The British Fired Upon The People Of Talcher From Air, Which Is One Among Five Such Incidents In The History Of India. Ultimately The Popular Victory Was Ensured When The King Was Compelled To Sign The Merger Documents In December, 1947. This Bloody Straggle Of The People Of Talcher Remains A Saga Of Self Sacrifice And Dedication Against The Unholy Nexus Of Obsolete Feudal Absolutism And Imperialism.

Part I begins with a triangular comparison of kingship among the Shilluks of East Africa, the Gajapatis of eastern India and kings in Renaissance France. The essay entitled the ‘King’s Three Bodies’ makes use of Ernst H. Kantorowicz’s classical study, The King’s Two Bodies in medieval political theology and extends it, not only in terms of the numbers of bodies that are found to be significant, but also theoretically. Another significant essay in this part looks at the unexpected but significant theoretical impact of social anthropological studies of acephalous, segmentary lineage societies in Africa on Indian historiography. The second part of this volume consists of three chapters dealing with the royal patronage of tribal and Hindu goddesses in Eastern India, while the third part presents studies on sleeping (and dreaming) kings and on the power of dead kings, a discussion of A.M.
