Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fetters of Memory, Vol. 2 of 2: A Novel It is curious and not very encouraging to observe that while the artless grace, instinctive truthfulness, and ready affection of childhood soon disappear; the less amiable traits of nursery life cast a dark shadow grotesque and exaggerated perhaps, but still an undeniable shadow on a man's character in later years, until long after his hair is grey. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fetters of Memory, Vol. 1 of 2: A Novel "The cruel crawling foam, The cruel hungry foam." Charles Kingsley. The wild storm wind, which moaned through city streets, and round gay houses, till it checked the glad course of song and dance, grew into a power strong with exultant mockery, as it swept over the desolate wastes of cliff and sand. Houseless wanderers, drawing their rags closer together, crept shivering into what poor shelter they could find; while in happy homes, mothers and maidens grew pale, as they thought of sons and lovers far away at sea. Follow Colonel Henry French as he endeavors to transform his hometown of Clarendon, North Carolina, into a society where racial equality and social harmony prevail, challenging the deeply ingrained segregationist traditions of the past. Through richly woven melodramatic subplots, Chesnutt presents a compelling tapestry of interconnected lives, illuminating the stark realities faced by black individuals in a society marred by inequality, limited opportunities, and systemic racism. Explore the deep-rooted fears and prejudices that perpetuated the oppression of African Americans, particularly in the realm of politics, as the novel unveils a thought-provoking exploration of the human experience in the aftermath of the Civil War.

This book was released on 2021-11-24 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Waddell Chesnutt best known for his novels and short stories exploring complex issues of racial and social identity in the post-Civil War South. He became active in the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, writing articles supporting education as well as legal challenges to discriminatory laws. Following the Civil Rights Movement during the 20th century, interest in the works of Chesnutt was revived. In style and subject matter, the writings of Charles Chesnutt straddle the divide between the local color school of American writing and literary realism. While Julius's tales recall the Uncle Remus tales published by Joel Chandler Harris, they differ in that Uncle Julius' tales offer oblique or coded commentary on the psychological and social effects of slavery and racial inequality. While controversy exists over whether Chesnutt's Uncle Julius stories reaffirmed stereotypical views of African Americans, most critics contend that their allegorical critiques of racial injustice took them to a different level. Book Committed to Memory

  • Author : Cheryl Finley
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2022-08-30
  • ISBN : 0691241066
  • Pages : 320 pages

Download or read book Committed to Memory written by Cheryl Finley and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2022-08-30 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How an eighteenth-century engraving of a slave ship became a cultural icon of Black resistance, identity, and remembrance One of the most iconic images of slavery is a schematic wood engraving depicting the human cargo hold of a slave ship. First published by British abolitionists in 1788, it exposed this widespread commercial practice for what it really was—shocking, immoral, barbaric, unimaginable. Printed as handbills and broadsides, the image Cheryl Finley has termed the "slave ship icon" was easily reproduced, and by the end of the eighteenth century it was circulating by the tens of thousands around the Atlantic rim. Committed to Memory provides the first in-depth look at how this artifact of the fight against slavery became an enduring symbol of Black resistance, identity, and remembrance. Finley traces how the slave ship icon became a powerful tool in the hands of British and American abolitionists, and how its radical potential was rediscovered in the twentieth century by Black artists, activists, writers, filmmakers, and curators. Finley offers provocative new insights into the works of Amiri Baraka, Romare Bearden, Betye Saar, and many others. She demonstrates how the icon was transformed into poetry, literature, visual art, sculpture, performance, and film—and became a medium through which diasporic Africans have reasserted their common identity and memorialized their ancestors. Beautifully illustrated, Committed to Memory features works from around the world, taking readers from the United States and England to West Africa and the Caribbean. It shows how contemporary Black artists and their allies have used this iconic eighteenth-century engraving to reflect on the trauma of slavery and come to terms with its legacy.
