Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditional festivals in Ghana have roots that may be traced to the earliest ancestors we can think of. No wonder almost every ethnic group has its festival. The repository for these festivals is the older folk in our society. What follows below is a treatment of the Ohum festival of the Akyem Abuakwa as recounted by my grandfather Opanyin Owusu-Koranteng, popularly known as Teacher Owusu-Koranteng. It touches on why every year the Ohum festival is celebrated. The aim for writing this account is modest. It is intended to arouse and satisfy the interest of readers to see the VALUE and SIGNIFICANCE of festivals in Ghanaian society, by using the Ohum as a typical one. Special apology however goes for anyone or group of persons who may in one way or the other be offended by this publication. A factual history of Ohum better spelt “Ohunuu-mu” must to the author, be written because of some people’s worship of PREMPESUPREMPEH. This is the Biriem river god, whose shrines are at Akyem Tafo and Kyebi. Worshipping of gods is not peculiar to the Akyems, Ghanaians or Africans. The Romans worshipped and prayed to River Tiber in Italy, calling it, “Father Tiber.” (Refer Macaulay, C Days of Ancient Rome.) The Britons sing, and boast of being sons of the sea. (Refer the British patriotic song, “When Britons first at heaven’s command arose from out of the azure main etc. etc.) and several other citations that this narration has not enough space to portray. The author is a Christian, and do not advocate the worship of gods, but JEHOVAH-GOD. He has implicit belief in Jesus Christ and respects JEHOVAH’s command to his people in abstaining from idol and image worship as found in Exodus 20:3 in the Holy Bible. Nevertheless, this work is mere history which needs to be written for posterity.

Beginning in the fifteenth century, powerful and ancient Ghanaian empires were taken over by colonial powers, with Great Britain taking control of the country until 1957. Since then, the country has existed as a diverse and independent nation, grouping together a large population of people with different ethnic, linguistic, and religious backgrounds. This book introduces readers to the multicultural nation of Ghana and its geography, history, environment, and culture. Engaging sidebars and vivid photographs accompany readers on their journey.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The decades of independence in Ghana have strengthened the idea of a national Ghanaian culture. The culture and customs of Ghana today are a product of diversity in traditional forms, influenced by a long history of Islamic and European contact. Culture and Customs of Ghana is the first book to concisely provide an up-to-date narrative on the most significant elements of the established cultural life and institutions as well as the most recent changes in the cultural landscape. Written expressly for students and the general reader, it belongs in every library supporting multicultural and African studies curricula. Ghana seeks to cultivate the philosophy of the African personality, to revive, maintain, and promote Ghanaian ways of life and integrate them into political and social institutions. Ghanaians also recognize their relationship to the rest of the world and continue to develop with the forces of globalization. Culture and Customs of Ghana authoritatively discusses the vibrant and adaptable people, from their religions to music and dance. A chronology, glossary, and numerous photos complement the text.

Book excerpt: This illustrated reference work covers a wide range of festivals that have sacred origins and are, or have been, part of a folk tradition, a world religion, or a major civilization. Traditional Festivals: A Multicultural Encyclopedia travels around the world and across the centuries to uncover an often unexpected richness of meaning in some of the major sacred festivals of the world's religions, the hallowed calendars of ancient civilizations, and the seasonal celebrations of tribal cultures. From Akitu to Yom Kippur, its 150+ entries look at the content and context of these festivals from a number of perspectives (including those relating to theology, anthropology, folklore, and social theory), tracing their historical development and variations across cultures. Readers will get a vivid sense of what each festival means to the people celebrating it; how each captures its culture's beliefs, hopes and fears, founding myths, and redemptive visions; and how each expresses the universal need of humans to connect their lives to a timeless spiritual dimension.

Book African Traditional Oral Literature and Visual cultures as Pedagogical Tools in Diverse Classroom Contexts

Download or read book African Traditional Oral Literature and Visual cultures as Pedagogical Tools in Diverse Classroom Contexts written by Lewis Asimeng-Boahene and published by IAP. This book was released on 2018-06-01 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, the second in the series, is a distinct exploration of how educational policy makers, curriculum developers, educators, learners and social activists can utilize the hitherto untapped rich resource of African traditional oral literature and visual cultures. These are epistemological reservoirs and invaluable pedagogical tools in the delivery of content in the classrooms of the present global village, most of whom contain diverse student populations from varying backgrounds. The content of the book is thus designed to help expand educators’ repertoire of understanding beyond the hitherto “conventional wisdom”, most of which are either outdated or are colonial impositions on former colonial entities. Our motivation for pulling together this anthology was due to the fact scholars, educators and educational policy makers have hitherto paid little attention to the epistemological and pedagogical value of Traditional Indigenous Knowledge systems (TIKS). Our objective has been largely achieved by this anthology in the sense that the research perspectives of the contributors to this effort have enhanced the hitherto limited exposure and knowledge about traditional oral literature and visual cultures in Africa. The torch that has been lighted from this endeavor heightens the epistemological and pedagogical implications of TIKS. In launching this book, we are extending a clarion call to researchers and disciples of Indigenous Knowledge systems in Africa and elsewhere to seize this opportunity and interest generated by this endeavor to undertake more studies in this area. Our current efforts were focused mainly on Africa TIKS systems, but we strongly believe that there are similar and equally powerful and important TIKS systems in other parts of the world, Asia, the Far East, Central and Southern America as well as the Caribbean that are longing for exploration and exposition. It is therefore our fervent hope that exploration and dissemination of knowledge in this field will continue with the flame lighted from this endeavor. We believe that these efforts will greatly enhance awareness an otherwise neglected and almost forgotten, but important aspects of knowledge creation and dissemination, especially about traditional and hitherto unwritten histories and knowledge systems around the world. These undertakings will help to broaden the conceptualization of what constitutes global knowledge within the current reality of globalization.
