Book Rituals and Traditional Events in the Modern World

Download or read book Rituals and Traditional Events in the Modern World written by Jennifer Laing and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-10-30 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many events have evolved over centuries, drawing on local customs and conditions. However, as the world becomes increasingly globalised, traditional events and the identities they support are increasingly being challenged and rituals may be lost. Reacting against this trend towards homogeneity, communities strive to preserve and even recreate their traditional events, which may require rituals to be resurrected or reinvented for a new audience. The aim of this book is to explore the role of traditional events and rituals in the modern world. The 16 chapters cover a range of case studies of the performance of ritual through events, including their historical antecedents and development over time, as well as their role in society, link with identities both seemingly fixed and fluid and their continued relevance. The cases examined are not museum pieces, but rather vibrant festivals and events that continue to persist. Drawing on the power of history and cultural tradition, they are manifestations of heritage, existing in three temporalities: celebrating the past, occurring in the present and aiming to continue into and influence the future. Iconic events including Chinese New Year, Hogmanay and the New Orleans Mardi Gras are examined and examples are drawn from a diverse range of countries such as South Korea, China, Laos, the United States, Scotland, Italy, India and Haiti. This volume provides a deep understanding upon the role of tradition and ritual within events, from a global perspective and will be valuable reading for students, researchers and academics interested in events, heritage and culture.

Book Sir Benjamin Stone s Pictures Festivals ceremonies and customs

Download or read book Sir Benjamin Stone s Pictures Festivals ceremonies and customs written by and published by . This book was released on 1906 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Sir Benjamin Stone, Member of Parliament for the Birmingham constituency, was a keen 'amateur' photographer, with a passion for, as he put it, 'unfaked' photographs. In 1897 he was a prime mover behind the National Photographic Record Association, which aimed to gather together an archive of photographs documenting every facet of contemporary British life, printed as carbon prints or platinotypes for permanence. As well as being its primary motivator, activist and publicist, Stone was also the association's most prolific photographer. In 1906, only four years before the association was disbanded owing to its members' apathy, Stone published an example of the king of thing he wanted to achieve with the group: two volumes of his own work, the first on British customs, the second on the Houses of Parliament. ... These two volumes mark the end of the nineteenth-century documentary photobook in Britain--documentary photography in the typological mode. Stone's Festivals, Ceremonies and Customs reflects back on half a century of documentary practice that was never quite carried forward into the next century."--The Photobook : A History Volume I / Martin Parr and Gerry Badger. London: Phaidon, 2004.

Book Ceremonies and Festivals

Download or read book Ceremonies and Festivals written by Goretti Zoma and published by Dissertation.com. This book was released on 2003 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to western influence and advancement in technology and education, many aspects of authentic African culture are fast fading away. Some of the practices have changed over time and gradually loosing many of their initial elements. The tradition had been transmitted over time through oral tradition, but in modern times, oral tradition cannot be relied upon for a culture to be preserved for future generations. This reference book documents three main rites that are practiced by the Uvwie-Urhobo tribe in Nigeria. They include the rites of marriage, burial and chieftaincy. The what, why, how, and where questions regarding these rites are fully explained. The book also describes two main annual festivals celebrated by this group of people. The significance of each of the festival is noted. A description of the rite of female circumcision is included in this book, although it is thankfully no longer practiced. Unfortunately, it was a widely practiced tradition in Uvwie-Urhobo until the early1990s, when it was rightfully banned by the Nigerian Government. The chapter on female circumcision is included to record an unfortunate and painful tradition that once existed. There is a glossary of Uvwie-Urhobo terms used in the book. The glossary is followed by a brief information piece about Nigeria. It includes such topics as location, climate, economy, Government, etc.
