Book The Effects of Increased Fertilizer Use and Economic Implications for Small sclae Farmers Near Lake Atitl n Guatemala

Download or read book The Effects of Increased Fertilizer Use and Economic Implications for Small sclae Farmers Near Lake Atitl n Guatemala written by Dale J. Novotny and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Small-scale (less than 1 ha) farmers near Lake Atitlán in Sololá Province, Guatemala are becoming increasingly active in non-traditional export crop (NTX) production. The transition from growing only a traditional, polycrop known as milpa carries both economic risk and opportunity for these producers. Their use rate of synthetic, phosphorus intense fertilizers, the most expensive input used to grow NTXs, are currently based on single-season buyer recommendations. Experts in the field have estimated that current use rates could be halved without detrimental effects to yield. Excess fertilizers are causing eutrophication problems in Lake Atitlán, which is in turn harming the second largest industry in the area: tourism. This study examines the risks associated with transitioning to NTX production at the household farm level. Models include yield risk using Monte Carlo simulations in @RISK6, and risk minimization and profit maximization given multiple production scenarios using GAMS.

Book Soil Productivity Enhancement

Download or read book Soil Productivity Enhancement written by Roland Nuhu Issaka and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2018-11-28 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soil Productivity Enhancement comprises five chapters written by scientists from various parts of the world. The book is divided into three sections. 1: Conversion of Environmentally Polluting Waste into Fertilizer. This section discusses the conversion of waste water and other by-products from factories into organic fertilizers. It further examines how these materials can be used to enhance crop production and improve soil productivity. 2: Practices for Improving Nutrient Availability. Good nutrient management and proper composting of organic materials are options that can be used to enhance the productivity of soil. These and other practices are examined in this section. 3: Policy on Fertilizer Use. The need for effective policies to control and promote the effective and efficient use of fertilizers is discussed in this section.

Book Applications of Systems Approaches at the Farm and Regional Levels

Download or read book Applications of Systems Approaches at the Farm and Regional Levels written by P.S. Teng and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Systems approaches for agricultural development are needed to determine rational strategies for the role of agriculture in national development. Mathematical models and computer simulation provide objective tools for applying science to determine and evaluate options for resource management at field, farm and regional scales. However, these tools would not be fully utilizable without incorporating social and economic dimensions into their application. The second international symposium, Systems Approaches for Agricultural Development, held in Los Baños, 6-8 December 1995, fostered this link between the bio-physical sciences and the social sciences in the choice of keynote papers and oral presentations, a selection of which is included in this book. The book's contents further reflect how systems approaches have definitely moved beyond the research mode into the application mode. The large number and high quality of interdisciplinary research projects reported from different parts of the globe, to determine land use options that will meet multiple goals and yet sustain natural resource bases, is a key indicator of this `coming of age'. At the farm level, where trade-off decisions between processes and products (commodities) feature strongly, much progress is also evident in the development of systems-based tools for decision making. This book will be of particular interest to all agricultural scientists and planners, as well as students interested in multidisciplinary and holistic approaches for agricultural development.

Book Economics of Land Degradation and Improvement A Global Assessment for Sustainable Development

Download or read book Economics of Land Degradation and Improvement A Global Assessment for Sustainable Development written by Ephraim Nkonya and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-11-11 with total page 695 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume deals with land degradation, which is occurring in almost all terrestrial biomes and agro-ecologies, in both low and high income countries and is stretching to about 30% of the total global land area. About three billion people reside in these degraded lands. However, the impact of land degradation is especially severe on livelihoods of the poor who heavily depend on natural resources. The annual global cost of land degradation due to land use and cover change (LUCC) and lower cropland and rangeland productivity is estimated to be about 300 billion USD. Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) accounts for the largest share (22%) of the total global cost of land degradation. Only about 38% of the cost of land degradation due to LUCC - which accounts for 78% of the US$300 billion loss – is borne by land users and the remaining share (62%) is borne by consumers of ecosystem services off the farm. The results in this volume indicate that reversing land degradation trends makes both economic sense, and has multiple social and environmental benefits. On average, one US dollar investment into restoration of degraded land returns five US dollars. The findings of the country case studies call for increased investments into the rehabilitation and restoration of degraded lands, including through such institutional and policy measures as strengthening community participation for sustainable land management, enhancing government effectiveness and rule of law, improving access to markets and rural services, and securing land tenure. The assessment in this volume has been conducted at a time when there is an elevated interest in private land investments and when global efforts to achieve sustainable development objectives have intensified. In this regard, the results of this volume can contribute significantly to the ongoing policy debate and efforts to design strategies for achieving sustainable development goals and related efforts to address land degradation and halt biodiversity loss.
