Book Fertility of Roma Minorities in Central and Eastern Europe

Download or read book Fertility of Roma Minorities in Central and Eastern Europe written by Laura Szabó and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our paper describes the specific fertility behaviour of the Roma population from four of the five countries of Central and Eastern Europe with a large Roma minority: Hungary, Romania, Serbia and Slovakia. We present the fertility behaviour of the Roma and the ethnic-majority population according to cohorts and related education in an international comparison, and show the relationship between fertility and ethnic residential segregation in Hungary. Using individual-level data from the 2011 population censuses, we compare the mean number of children according to cohort, ethnicity, education and residential segregation. The mean number of children ever born to Roma women is far above the majority population's average for all birth cohorts and in each country. Completed education and cohort fertility are basically inversely related, regardless of country of residence, ethnicity and birth cohort. However, exposure to the ethnic-majority population affects fertility in both the Roma and the majority population, but in different ways, depending on level of education, in Hungary. Completed education and residential segregation may exert different forces at the two ends of society: at the upper end of the social hierarchy, neither segregation nor ethnicity matters; at the lower end, both exposure to ethnic majority behaviour and ethnicity matter. Fertility in the Roma population is clearly higher than in the ethnic-majority population, and is similar across the four countries examined. Educational attainment has a robust impact on Roma fertility in each country, and the case of Hungary shows that exposure to majority behaviour also counts.

Book Roma and the Transition in Central and Eastern Europe

Download or read book Roma and the Transition in Central and Eastern Europe written by Dena Ringold and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report brings together the available evidence from primary and secondary sources, including household surveys and results of recent qualitative studies, to develop a picture of the development challenges facing Roma populations in Central and Eastern Europe. While living standards have declined for all population groups during the transition to a market economy, there are growing indications that conditions have deteriorated more severely for Roma than for others, and that Roma are poorly positioned to take advantage of emerging economic opportunities. This report focuses on five countries in Central and Eastern Europe: Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania the Czech Republic, and the Slovak Republic. The first chapter of the report provides the historical context and an overview of the methodological issues and main data sources; chapter two presents the available evidence on welfare status and living conditions, examining poverty, housing education, employment and health; chapter three considers issues relating to access to social services; and the final chapter reviews the opportunities for Roma participation in the design and implementation of community development policies and programmes, and outlines policy implications.

Book Roma in Eastern Europe

Download or read book Roma in Eastern Europe written by Richard Hajek and published by . This book was released on 1998-12-01 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the time Roma arrived in Europe during the Middle Ages, their presence as often resulted in friction with the other peoples of Central and Eastern Europe. This generalization and indigenous attitude applies today. Due to the Roma's unique culture, customs, language, and social structure, they are not integrated into Central and Eastern European society. Moreover, Roma are a target of racial bias and discrimination, especially during times of social and political turmoil. At the turn of the century, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Romania are all undergoing tremendous change, with the Roma as a focus for society's ills. Security problems, arising therefrom, include migration, high demographic birthrate, illiteracy, unemployment, and criminal behavior. Therefore an effective program of integrating Roma into the new democracies is necessary. The new democracies must also improve minority rights in order to join European security and economic organizations. Membership is essential for the survival of democracy in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Romania.

Book Challenges Facing Researchers on Roma Minorities in Contemporary Europe

Download or read book Challenges Facing Researchers on Roma Minorities in Contemporary Europe written by Annabel Tremlett and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A bleak picture of the situation of Roma and Gypsy minorities is evoked by descriptions of their socio-economic marginalisation. Since the 1990s, the decision of the European Union (EU) to expand eastwards to include former socialist countries highlighted Roma minorities as the most discriminated and excluded minority group in Europe. The social integration of Roma formed a key part of the accession negotiations as the EU attempted to address the socio-economic disadvantage of Roma by putting pressure on national governments of accession states in Central and Eastern Europe to develop human rights and non-discriminatory institutions as well as specific strategies to improve the situation of Roma. Furthermore, structural funds were made available for projects aimed at the social inclusion of Roma minority groups. These interventions facilitated opportunities for European policy intervention discussions in order to address the acute and specific challenges facing Roma across Europe. Roma minorities largely remain in disempowered and marginal communities with poverty and discrimination still cited as major challenges to their health, social and economic well-being and stability. Indeed, the situation of Roma communities is as precarious today is it has ever been with the ongoing economic crisis and the rise of the far right contributing to this predicament"--Publisher's description.

Book The Challenge of Anti Roma Politics

Download or read book The Challenge of Anti Roma Politics written by Will Guy and published by Central European Uni Press. This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Challenge of Anti-Roma Politics reveals the marginalized situation of most Roma populations in Central and Eastern Europe today. This despite financial and other assistance from the European Union both before and after countries with the largest Roma minorities had been admitted as EU members. The discussion of deteriorating conditions of Roma communities forms the context for the book's investigation of the rise of anti-Roma politics, accompanied by hate speech, hate crimes, and extremist demonstrations. The book also explores how the European Commission, national governments, and Roma and pro-Roma NCOs have sought ways of countering these developments. An overview to orient readers is followed by a leading Roma activist's stark account of conditions in one of Romania's most deprived ghettos. Lucid explanations of the pivotal role of the EU introduce a set of articles on EU key target areas for action: employment, education, housing, and health. Options for combatting mounting anti-Gypsyism are then explored by Roma and pro-Roma activists and researchers. The book concludes with an article suggesting how Roma can use the example of the U.S. civil rights movement to achieve parity with non-Roma. Book jacket.

Book Roma Minority Youth Across Cultural Contexts

Download or read book Roma Minority Youth Across Cultural Contexts written by Radosveta Dimitrova and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Roma ethnic minority, also called the Romani people and sometimes as gypsies (usually in derogatory way), have one of the most dramatic histories in Europe and worldwide. The Indian origin of Roma as advocated by linguists since the 18th century, based on similarities between the Romany language (referred also as Romanes or Romani) and the Sanskrit (Achim, 2004), is now widely accepted. Although the precise region of the Indian sub-continent which Roma originated and migrated from to Europe remains elusive, genetic linguistic, historical and anthropological findings suggest that their migration started from Central India, to the Northern India, then transiting Persia and Armenia and travelled towards the Byzantine Empire and Asia Minor, and finally to Greece (Kenrick, 2007). The precise time when the journey started is also uncertain. Historical records indicate that Roma first came to work in Persia sometime between 224-241, and were either brought or deported to the Arab Empire at the start of 661, reach Constantinople in 1050, and then were in Greece in 1290. They then continued to Eastern Europe and Balkans (arriving in Serbia in 1348, Croatia in 1362, Bulgaria in 1378, Romania in 1385), followed by Central and Western Europe (arriving in Germany in 1407, France and Switzerland in 1418, Belgium in 1419, Holland in 1420, Italy in 1422, Spain in 1425, Hungary in 1489, and England in 1513; see Kenrick, 2007, for a comprehensive chronology of Roma history)"--

Book Roma in an Expanding Europe

Download or read book Roma in an Expanding Europe written by Dena Ringold and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2005 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the enlargement of the European Union in May 2004, Roma (or gypsies) are now the largest minority group in Europe. They are also one of the poorest and most vulnerable groups, living mainly in Central and Eastern Europe, suffering poverty levels as high as ten times that found within majority populations. The lack of information about the living conditions and needs of Roma people compound these stark gaps in human development outcomes. This publication, prepared for a conference held in Budapest, Hungary in June 2003, brings together original sociological research, evaluations of programme initiatives, and the first comparative cross-country household survey on ethnicity and poverty. It finds that Roma poverty is multi-faceted and can only be addressed by a inclusive policy approach which respects their diversity.

Book The Roma in Romanian History

Download or read book The Roma in Romanian History written by Viorel Achim and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 2004-08-01 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the greatest challenges during the enlargement process of the European Union towards the east is how the issue of the Roma or Gypsies is tackled. This ethnic minority group represents a much higher share by numbers, too, in some regions going above 20% of the population. This enormous social and political problem cannot be solved without proper historical studies like this book, the most comprehensive history of Gypsies in Romania. It is based on academic research, synthesizing the entire historical Romanian and foreign literature concerning this topic, and using lot of information from the archives. The main focus is laid on the events of the greatest consequence. Special attention is devoted to aspects linked to the long history of the Gypsies, such as slavery, the process of integration and assimilation into the majority population, as well as the marginalization of Gypsies, which has historic roots. The process of emancipation of Gypsies in the mid-19th century receives due treatment. The deportation of Gypsies to Transnistria during the Antonescu regime, between 1942-1944, is reconstructed in a special chapter. The closing chapters elaborate on the policy toward Gypsies in the decades after the Second World War that explain for the latest developments and for the situation of this population in today's Romania.

Book The Roma in Central and Eastern Europe

Download or read book The Roma in Central and Eastern Europe written by Andrey Ivanov and published by Incumbent. This book was released on 2002 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Across Central and Eastern Europe, many of the region's Roma ethnic populations endure problems of poverty and social exclusion, in terms of access to employment opportunities, health deprivation such as high levels of infant mortality and poor basic nutrition, education and literacy, and household income. These problems increase dependency on the State, creating a vicious circle that further widens the socio-economic gap between Roma and majority populations with damaging social and political consequences. This report broadens the debate about their marginalisation in Europe by moving the focus from human rights alone to the greater challenge of human development.
