Book excerpt: The Fertility and Family Surveys (FFS) project was initiated by the Population Activities Unit (PAU) of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe in the late 1980s. Its principal objective is to conduct a long-term sample survey research programme focusing on fertility and family change. The aim is to document and understand various aspects of contemporary partnership and reproductive behaviour in industrialised countries. Results of analyses based on the FFS data for the various countries are presented in the Standard Country Reports. This is the first comprehensive survey of fertility and family in Lithuania. Since the early 1990s, the country has experienced striking demographic changes. The number of marriages has declined, but the number of consensual unions has increased, but birth rates have fallen. Meanwhile there has been an increase in emigration. This fertility and family survey examines the economic, social and population trends.

For various reasons, Denmark did not conduct a Fertility and Family Survey (FFS). Instead, the report aims to consider the issues raised in the FFS studies as far as possible, based on a number of sources including previously published statistics and unpublished data from registers. The report considers: social, economic and cultural trends; population trends; an analysis of the data comparable to the FFS results, including partnerships, fertility patterns, female education and occupation; and an overview of some life-course event histories.

Book Globalization Uncertainty and Youth in Society

Download or read book Globalization Uncertainty and Youth in Society written by Hans-Peter Blossfeld and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-01-16 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining how youths in fourteen industrialized societies make the transition to adulthood in an era of globalization and rising uncertainty, this collection of essays investigates the impact that institutions working with social groups of youths have upon those youths' abilities to make adult decisions determining their life courses. Covering both Europe and North America, the book includes case studies, and contains country-specific contributions on conservative, social-democratic, post-socialist, liberal and familistic welfare regimes, as well as data from the GLOBALIFE project. Filling the gap in the market on the micro effects of globalization on individuals, and taking an empirical approach to the topic, this impressive volume brings the individual and nation-specific institutions back into the discussion on globalization.
