Book Bervie and Beyond

Download or read book Bervie and Beyond written by Colin W. Thom and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-03-13 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bervie and Beyond reaches back to the early 1700s and into the lives of the author’s paternal ancestry in North East Scotland, and then endeavours to trace the lives of all his fellow descendants through to around the mid-1900s. It tells the story of a not very successful smuggler who turned legitimate and established the first linen mill in Scotland. It progresses to his son Walter, who published several books in the early 1800s before being lured to Irelandby Chief Secretary Robert Peel to publish the Dublin Journal newspaper. But it was the next generation which brought real success. Alex Thom developed what was to become the leading Irish printing company, culminating in appointment as the country’s Queen’s Printer. Alex amassed a huge personal fortune which enabled him to establish his beloved Thom’s Directory. By his own efforts it grew in content and stature, and quickly became the primary reference source for all things Irish. It was his greatest achievement, and the Irish nation will forever remember him for it. But wealth and a second marriage created downsides, with family divisions and a widow who took “spreading the joy” (to other than family) to a new art form. In the following generations we learn of a suicide, successful migration toArgentinaandSouth Africa, and in TheAntipodes, destitution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Samuel Thomas Gill, or STG as he was universally known, was Australia’s most significant and popular artist of the mid-nineteenth century. For his contemporaries he epitomised ‘Marvellous Melbourne’ basking in the glow of the gold rushes. He worked in South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales and left some of the most memorable images of urban and rural life in colonial Australia. A passionate defender of Indigenous Australians and of the environment, Gill in his art celebrated the emerging quintessential Australian character. This is the first major comprehensive book to be devoted to Gill and presents a radical reassessment of one of the most important figures in Australian colonial art and reproduces, in some instances for the first time, some of the most startling images from nineteenth-century Australian art. There will be an exhibition of S.T. Gill’s work at the State Library of Victoria in July 2015 and at the National Library of Australia in June 2016, plus smaller shows in regional Victorian galleries. In association with the State Library of Victoria.

Book Hush

    Book Details:
  • Author : Dominique Hecq
  • Publisher : Apollo Books
  • Release : 2017
  • ISBN : 9781742589473
  • Pages : 82 pages

Download or read book Hush written by Dominique Hecq and published by Apollo Books. This book was released on 2017 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Dominique Hecq writes through dulled topographies of mourning, avowing death is a "singular fear of finitude against a background of black light." Autobiographical, and sharply particular, Hush takes readers into an abyss where "grief is a caesura" and loss means "being hostage to a ghost." But this book is not only a poignant elegy to "losing your mother tongue and cracking your own voice"; Hush is also an incandescent lament from an "un / harmed" speaker locating the possibilities and lexicons of dnouement. Silencing the undertones of a surpassing grief, Hecq's quest is finally epic and heroic.'--Dan Disney "Life goes on, they say," says Dominique Hecq in her startling and moving new book of lined and prose poetry, Hush. Then, "Life goes on leaving." A response to the death of a child, charting the near death and revival of a marriage and family, Hush is the lyric meditation of a true scholar, deeply inflected by theory but driven by the urgencies of the body. Early and late, it poses unanswerable questions - "Why is white white?" - and answers them by returning to the world of "Chalk, rice, zinc / / Crystal falls / / " and, devastatingly, "Limestone graves," before the language of the world disintegrates. Seeming at first to span a year of seasons, then suddenly encompassing fifteen years, the poem charts a remarkable inner journey, which begins in starvation, a refusal of the sensuous, but finally recollects not joy so much as presence. The world reemerges in water, birds, flowers, and most of all food, prepared at first as sacrifice, for others, until it makes itself present-first through color but also through smell, through sound, and literally through ink - and becomes the poet's communion.--Katharine Coles, University of Utah (Series: UWAP Poetry) [Subject: Poetry]

Book Zoological Catalogue of Australia

Download or read book Zoological Catalogue of Australia written by G. Cassis and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2002 with total page 760 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The infraorder Pentatomomorpha is the subject of the second volume in the Zoological Catalogue of Australia series dealing with the true bugs (the suborder Heteroptera). It includes the bark bugs, stilt bugs, seed bugs, cotton stainers, burrowing bugs, shield bugs and stink bugs. Many of these species are of significant economic importance both as pests and as natural enemies of other insect pests. In this catalogue, the authors propose a new classification for the Australian Heteroptera based on the most recent developments in heteropterology worldwide. The proposed classification departs significantly from all previous treatment of the Australian fauna. There is a comprehensive treatment of the classification and nomenclature of the Australian species and a thorough review of the literature concerned with the higher classification of the Pentatomomorpha. The volume gives detailed information on the distribution and ecology of each species and features the first in depth listing of their host associations, including a significant accounting of the plant associations. All species and generic synonymies are given, including extra-limital synonyms, along with detailed type specimen data. Features * Provides a new classification for the Australian Heteroptera, reflecting the most recent developments in Heteropterology worldwide * Covers 34 families, 439 genera and 1179 species * Completes the work for the Australian Heteroptera, complementing volume 27.3A * Includes comprehensive synonymical and bibliographic listings and detailed distribution information * Gives the first listing of the host plants of the Pentatomomorpha in Australia * Sample

Book Birthplaces of Australian Motor Racing

Download or read book Birthplaces of Australian Motor Racing written by Bill Pearson and published by Austin Macauley Publishers. This book was released on 2022-12-16 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book records and now preserves the history of Australian motorsport. Huge proportions of it were just on the very edge of being lost. By the time you have read this book, you will be unbeatable at Australian motor racing trivia around any race campground fire pit or BBQ. You will know what the deadliest day was trackside in this country, the speedway promoter who discovered and named one of Australia’s biggest international rock groups, the most extreme financial car racing venue disaster of all time, why many residential roads have names the people who live there don’t appreciate, and what venue built its own railway station which is still in use today. You will discover places worth dragging the family off to so you can take photos of rusting artefacts and sprout knowledgeable but boring nostalgic conversations. You’ll also be amazed at some of the historic car racing locations you’ve unknowingly been driving past. How do you locate old car venues when some were utterly demolished 90 years ago, an industrial complex built on the same spot, which was in turn torn down and replaced with a university, a lake or a multi-storey housing estate? This roll call of mine started out with two simple questions that most petrol heads in this country ask themselves sooner or later. How many car racing facilities have closed in Australia – and why?
