Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ready-reference guide to international online, CD-ROM, and Internet sources saves the reader valuable time finding news information. With its simple to use charts and alphabetic listings, this guide provides quick answers to questions, such as: * Which online and CD-ROM databases provide news information from Russia? * Which online services have strong Asian news coverage? * Is there a CD-ROM database providing news from Switzerland? and * Where is a 1993 story from The Chicago Tribuneavailable online? Focusing on commercial and economic news as well as current affairs, this guide will be of particular interest to journalists and commercial researchers. Sections on news online and CD-ROM databases are organized by region and country, and help the reader identify potentially useful sources by describing the language(s) of the source, the date range covered, and the format of the records and providers. Product files of all the online databases and CD-ROMs listed make up the third section of the guide, presenting contact details of the provider, the subjects covered by the product, and the geographic focus of the file. To find out more about a particular product, an alphabetic list of all the publishers and vendors of the online services and CD-ROMs in this reference will provide a useful point of contact. A country by country list of the World Wide Web sites providing news information makes up the final section of the book. This gives URLs for the Web sites of specific newspapers and other news based sites.

Download or read book Spinning Tops Gumdrops written by Edwin Barnard and published by National Library of Australia. This book was released on 2018-03-01 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spinning Tops and Gumdrops takes us back to childhood in colonial Australia. The delight of children at play is universal, but the pleasure these children experience as depicted through the book's photographs is through their 'imagination, skill and daring' rather than through possessions. Children play quoits and jacks, hide and seek, cricket with a kerosene tin for a wicket, dress ups and charades. They climb trees, run races, and build rafts to sail on the local waterhole. The photographs show children happily absorbed in the play of their own making. Being a child in colonial Australia was also tough. It was a time when school yard disagreements were sorted out with fists and 'the loss of a little claret'. A time when children could view public hangings and premature death was frequent, especially taking the very young and vulnerable though dysentery, whooping cough or diphtheria. The lasting impression left by the contemporary accounts, photographs, etchings and paintings of colonial children in Spinning Tops and Gumdrops is their possession of qualities of resilience, self-sufficiency and acceptance of their lot. Perhaps it was through lack of choice, or of knowing no other. Nevertheless, these were qualities that put them in good stead for the challenges many faced in their adulthood. Interestingly, these are qualities on which contemporary society still places a high value, but which today seem a little more elusive.

Book excerpt: Everybody has a book in them, or so the saying goes. For Kate Painter – wife, mother, freelance editor and aspiring writer – it's just a matter of finding a spare five minutes, a little peace and quiet... and something to write about. When her cousin Angie announces she has a room to let, Kate's spur of the moment decision to move temporarily out of the family home and in with Angie takes everyone, not least her husband and teenage children, by complete surprise. Yet Kate's sure that in this room of her own, she'll finally be able to write the novel she's always wanted to. But it doesn't happen so easily. Writer's block, dirty laundry and emergency babysitting duties all conspire against her. Amid the endless distractions, Kate is drawn into exploring the story of her family: her less than normal childhood with Angie on the family farm, her father's recent death, and the mystery behind Angie's enigmatic, absent mother.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Using the work of great Australian painters and poets as an entry point, this cultural study counters the popular myth that early colonial settlers were environmentally irresponsible and offers both aesthetic and historical evidence that suggests nature always figured prominently in the Australian national consciousness. Preserving endangered species, protecting forests, maintaining public land rights, and staving off climate change were at issue in the first environmental law of Australia enacted in 1788. Parlimentary debates, personal observations, and artistic renderings explore the texture and dimensions of early Australian environmentalism."
