Book Fermat s Last Theorem an alternative perspective using classical geometry

Download or read book Fermat s Last Theorem an alternative perspective using classical geometry written by Mercedes Orús Lacort and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relevance of this theorem in the history of mathematics is truly remarkable. A comment was first written by Pierre de Fermat in the margin of the original version of his copy of the Arithmetica of Diophantus. He literally said that the margin was too narrow to show his proof. Still, Fermat's original proof, if existing, has remained a mystery over the years. Using advanced mathematics, a truly remarkable proof of the theorem could be put forward only recently by A. Wiles. Still, the conjecture behind FLT was inspired while studying a new edition of the Arithmetica, precisely when Fermat was reading about how to write a square number as a sum of two squares, that is, how to find Pythagorean triples that are solutions of the quadratic Diophantine equations. For this reason, it looks plausible at least in principle that the theorem can also be studied from a different perspective, closer to what Fermat had probably in mind originally, either correct or wrong.

Book Fermat Equation over several fields and other historical mathematical conjectures

Download or read book Fermat Equation over several fields and other historical mathematical conjectures written by Mercedes Orús Lacort and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2019-03-09 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a teacher of several mathematics subjects at university level, and writer of several books that preceded to this one, and as a result of my goal to try to explain what seemed difficult as something easy, for a few years I began to investigate in several mathematics areas about possible simple proofs to complex mathematical problems. This book contains the results of these investigations, referring to Fermat's last theorem, as well as the existence of solutions for the Fermat equation in other fields such as quadratic integers and Gaussians, and conjectures such as Collatz conjecture and Goldbach strong conjecture.

Book A First Course in Modular Forms

Download or read book A First Course in Modular Forms written by Fred Diamond and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-03-30 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces the theory of modular forms, from which all rational elliptic curves arise, with an eye toward the Modularity Theorem. Discussion covers elliptic curves as complex tori and as algebraic curves; modular curves as Riemann surfaces and as algebraic curves; Hecke operators and Atkin-Lehner theory; Hecke eigenforms and their arithmetic properties; the Jacobians of modular curves and the Abelian varieties associated to Hecke eigenforms. As it presents these ideas, the book states the Modularity Theorem in various forms, relating them to each other and touching on their applications to number theory. The authors assume no background in algebraic number theory and algebraic geometry. Exercises are included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Features the classical themes of geometry with plentiful applications in mathematics, education, engineering, and science Accessible and reader-friendly, Classical Geometry: Euclidean, Transformational, Inversive, and Projective introduces readers to a valuable discipline that is crucial to understanding bothspatial relationships and logical reasoning. Focusing on the development of geometric intuitionwhile avoiding the axiomatic method, a problem solving approach is encouraged throughout. The book is strategically divided into three sections: Part One focuses on Euclidean geometry, which provides the foundation for the rest of the material covered throughout; Part Two discusses Euclidean transformations of the plane, as well as groups and their use in studying transformations; and Part Three covers inversive and projective geometry as natural extensions of Euclidean geometry. In addition to featuring real-world applications throughout, Classical Geometry: Euclidean, Transformational, Inversive, and Projective includes: Multiple entertaining and elegant geometry problems at the end of each section for every level of study Fully worked examples with exercises to facilitate comprehension and retention Unique topical coverage, such as the theorems of Ceva and Menalaus and their applications An approach that prepares readers for the art of logical reasoning, modeling, and proofs The book is an excellent textbook for courses in introductory geometry, elementary geometry, modern geometry, and history of mathematics at the undergraduate level for mathematics majors, as well as for engineering and secondary education majors. The book is also ideal for anyone who would like to learn the various applications of elementary geometry.

Book Modular Forms and Fermat s Last Theorem

Download or read book Modular Forms and Fermat s Last Theorem written by Gary Cornell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the expanded lectures given at a conference on number theory and arithmetic geometry held at Boston University. It introduces and explains the many ideas and techniques used by Wiles, and to explain how his result can be combined with Ribets theorem and ideas of Frey and Serre to prove Fermats Last Theorem. The book begins with an overview of the complete proof, followed by several introductory chapters surveying the basic theory of elliptic curves, modular functions and curves, Galois cohomology, and finite group schemes. Representation theory, which lies at the core of the proof, is dealt with in a chapter on automorphic representations and the Langlands-Tunnell theorem, and this is followed by in-depth discussions of Serres conjectures, Galois deformations, universal deformation rings, Hecke algebras, and complete intersections. The book concludes by looking both forward and backward, reflecting on the history of the problem, while placing Wiles'theorem into a more general Diophantine context suggesting future applications. Students and professional mathematicians alike will find this an indispensable resource.
