Book excerpt: MOST ANTICIPATED by Bustle • "Sci-Fi Thriller" recommendation from Buzzfeed • An Indie Next Pick In this stunning follow-up to Hollow Kingdom and Seattle Times/Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association bestseller, the animal kingdom's "favorite apocalyptic hero"is back with a renewed sense of hope for humanity, ready to take on a world ravaged by a viral pandemic (Helen Macdonald). Once upon an apocalypse, there lived an obscenely handsome American crow named S.T. . . . When the world last checked-in with its favorite Cheeto addict, the planet had been overrun by flesh-hungry beasts, and nature had started re-claiming her territory from humankind. S.T., the intrepid crow, alongside his bloodhound-bestie Dennis, had set about saving pets that had become trapped in their homes after humanity went the way of the dodo. That is, dear reader, until S.T. stumbled upon something so rare—and so precious—that he vowed to do everything in his power to safeguard what could, quite literally, be humanity's last hope for survival. But in a wild world plagued by prejudiced animals, feather-raising environments, new threats so terrifying they make zombies look like baby bunnies, and a horrendous dearth of cheesy snacks, what's a crow to do? Why, wing it on another big-hearted, death-defying adventure, that's what! Joined by a fabulous new cast of animal characters, S.T. faces many new challenges plus his biggest one yet: parenthood. Includes a Reading Group Guide.

Book excerpt: Investigating a mysterious firefight in Colombia leads a journalist into a world of corrupt churches in this gripping thriller by the author of Necropolis. When a horribly violent confrontation occurs outside of Cauca, Colombia, only a young boy is around to witness it. But no sooner does the violence happen than it disappears, vanished without a trace. Nobody claims to have seen anything. Nobody claims to have heard anything. That is, until an anonymous accusation catalyzes a dangerous investigation into the deep underbelly of the Christian churches present today in Latin America. The Night Will Be Long is a dark, twisting thriller filled with moments of humor and pain—a story that will stick with readers long after they turn the last page. Praise for The Night Will Be Long “This intelligent police procedural from Gamboa . . . refracts decades of turbulent Colombian history through the experiences of dramatically drawn characters. . . . a colorful story with solid grounding in historical detail.” —Publishers Weekly “For my money, there may be no more ambitious, accomplished writer than Gamboa at work in international noir today. Gamboa brings a searching, penetrating style to the prose and unwinds a genuinely compelling and provocative story that interrogates the very nature of violence and truth.” —Crime Reads “An engrossing thriller set in a modern-day Colombia haunted by the legacy of decades of armed conflict. . . . Gamboa has crafted an effective thriller that thrives on his empathetic imagination.” —Shelf Awareness

Winnie's powerhouse narration style and plots full of twists and turns make every page jump. ~~~ I’m Cleopatra O’Keefe, and I’m tired AF. In the past year, I’ve managed to keep a pile of unappreciative gods and magicals on track, and now a rogue, full-on-jerk pixie king I didn’t know existed is determined to burn the world—and take me out with it. Normally, I'd see this as a shrug and slug back proposition, but the past year's ginormous battles had a price. I need a freaking miracle. The entire world is ready for a drink. And that pixie’s gotta go. So far, the cocktails are the only part I’ve got handled. My rock, my forever love, is on the other side of the globe working to help me, but the distance limits what he can do. We’re all in survival’s countdown, but I’m not down for the count. Yet. The pixie king’s army just blew my safe harbor to smithereens, and everyone I love is at risk. Time to pour a fat glass of payback. ~~~ Reviews for The Record Series: "A magnificent experience following a magical introduction to the Keeper. Book Magician of Sound

  • Author : Jessie Fillerup
  • Publisher : University of California Press
  • Release : 2021-04-20
  • ISBN : 0520379888
  • Pages : 301 pages

Download or read book Magician of Sound written by Jessie Fillerup and published by University of California Press. This book was released on 2021-04-20 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: French composer Maurice Ravel was described by critics as a magician, conjurer, and illusionist. Scholars have been aware of this historical curiosity, but none so far have explained why Ravel attracted such critiques or what they might tell us about how to interpret his music. Magician of Sound examines Ravel's music through the lens of illusory experience, considering how timbre, orchestral effects, figure/ground relationships, and impressions of motion and stasis might be experienced as if they were conjuring tricks. Applying concepts from music theory, psychology, philosophy, and the history of magic, Jessie Fillerup develops an approach to musical illusion that newly illuminates Ravel's fascination with machines and creates compelling links between his music and other forms of aesthetic illusion, from painting and poetry to fiction and phantasmagoria. Fillerup analyzes scenes of enchantment and illusory effects in Ravel's most popular works, including Boléro, La Valse, Daphnis et Chloé, and Rapsodie espagnole, relating his methods and musical effects to the practice of theatrical conjurers. Drawing on a rich well of primary sources, Magician of Sound provides a new interdisciplinary framework for interpreting this enigmatic composer, linking magic and music.

Book Daring to Date Again

Download or read book Daring to Date Again written by Ann Anderson Evans and published by She Writes Press. This book was released on 2014-11-11 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ann has two kids, two careers, two divorces, a pile of friends and sings soprano in the church choir. But after twelve years single, she is sick of celibacy. She’s been through enough to know that marriage is not what she was brought up to expect, and that love can be slippery and uncertain. With a re-awakened libido and a longing for adventure, she steps outside her comfort zone—embarking on a boundary-pushing, soul-searching journey into the world of online dating. Ranging from Montclair, New Jersey to Harare, Zimbabwe, Daring to Date Again: A Memoir is a compelling, often racy memoir of one woman’s late-life adventures with sex and dating in the modern world. As she rollicks (and bawls) her way through dozens of relationships, Evans tackles some touchy topics with humor and insight: the morality of dating married men, whether women over sixty should consider having children, what age difference is too much, and more. Daring, frank, and a little bit nutty, Daring to Date Again is a story about what happens when a lonely, sex-starved sixty-year-old woman decides to put herself on the market again—but on her own terms.

Book Animals and Human Society

Download or read book Animals and Human Society written by Colin G. Scanes and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2017-09-18 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Animals and Human Society provides a solid, scientific, research-based background to advance understanding of how animals impact humans. As a resource for both science and non-science majors (including students planning to major in or studying animal science, pre-veterinary medicine, animal behavior, conservation biology, ecotoxicology, epidemiology and evolutionary biology), the book can be used as a text for courses in Animals and Human Society or Animal Science, or as supplemental material for an Introduction to Animal Science. The book offers foundational background to those who may have little background in animal agriculture and have focused interest on companion animals and horses. Animals have had profound effects on people from the earliest times, ranging from zoonotic diseases, to the global impact of livestock, poultry and fish production, to the influences of human-associated animals on the environment (on extinctions, air and water pollution, greenhouse gases, etc.), to the importance of animals in human evolution and hunter-gatherer communities. The volume introduces livestock production (including poultry and aquaculture) but also includes coverage of companion and lab animals. In addition, animal behavior and animal perception are covered. It can also function as a reference or recommended reading for a capstone class on ethical and public policy aspects related to animals. This book is likewise an excellent resource for researchers, academics or students newly entering a related field or coming from another discipline and needing foundational information, as well as interested laypersons looking to augment their knowledge on the many impacts of animals in human society. Features research-based and pedagogically sound content, with learning goals and textboxes to provide key information Challenges readers to consider issues based on facts rather than polemics Poses ethical questions and raises overall societal impacts Balances traditional animal science with companion animals, animal biology, zoonotic diseases, animal products, environmental impacts and all aspects of human/animal interaction Includes access to PowerPoints that facilitate easy adoption and/or use for online classes
