Book The World of Perception

Download or read book The World of Perception written by Maurice Merleau-Ponty and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-07-24 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'In simple prose Merleau-Ponty touches on his principle themes. He speaks about the body and the world, the coexistence of space and things, the unfortunate optimism of science – and also the insidious stickiness of honey, and the mystery of anger.' - James Elkins Maurice Merleau-Ponty was one of the most important thinkers of the post-war era. Central to his thought was the idea that human understanding comes from our bodily experience of the world that we perceive: a deceptively simple argument, perhaps, but one that he felt had to be made in the wake of attacks from contemporary science and the philosophy of Descartes on the reliability of human perception. From this starting point, Merleau-Ponty presented these seven lectures on The World of Perception to French radio listeners in 1948. Available in a paperback English translation for the first time in the Routledge Classics series to mark the centenary of Merleau-Ponty’s birth, this is a dazzling and accessible guide to a whole universe of experience, from the pursuit of scientific knowledge, through the psychic life of animals to the glories of the art of Paul Cézanne.

Book Antarctica and the Humanities

Download or read book Antarctica and the Humanities written by Roberts Peder and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-08-31 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The continent for science is also a continent for the humanities. Despite having no indigenous human population, Antarctica has been imagined in powerful, innovative, and sometimes disturbing ways that reflect politics and culture much further north. Antarctica has become an important source of data for natural scientists working to understand global climate change. As this book shows, the tools of literary studies, history, archaeology, and more, can likewise produce important insights into the nature of the modern world and humanity more broadly.

Book Edmund Husserl Bibliography

Download or read book Edmund Husserl Bibliography written by Steven Spileers and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This bibliography contains the publications of Husserl and the main secondary literature on Husserl, from Husserl's earliest publication (1887) till today (1997). As the collection of material was conduded in lune 1997, the list of publications for the year 1997 is of course incomplete. In this bibliography publications in the following languages have been induded: German, English, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and Dutch - for both primary and secondary literature. Since this bibliography has been based primarily on the consultation of the induded documents (and not restricted to copying already existing bibliographies), it was not possible to indude publications in languages other than those mentioned. The bibliography has been constructed in the following way: 1. The list of Husserl's works and secondary literature by individual authors is preceded by a list of all edited volumes in which a text by or on Husserl is published. This list is ordered chronologica11y and runs from 1921 ti11 1997 (inclusive). Edited volumes of the same year are classified according to language, and this in the order mentioned above: German, English, French, etc. Edited volumes with a title in more than one language are classified according to the above order of languages (this of course concerns only the title of the edited volume, not the title(s) of the individual contributions). This order is maintained throughout the other parts of the bibliography.

Book Federico Garcia Lorca and the Culture of Male Homosexuality

Download or read book Federico Garcia Lorca and the Culture of Male Homosexuality written by Ángel Sahuquillo and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2007-05-31 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spain in the twentieth century gave birth to an array of astounding artistic and literary talent, including the passionately iconoclastic writer Federico Garcia Lorca. But his works were ill received in the homophobic atmosphere of institutionalized Spanish criticism. Because of this atmosphere, even today's critics have effectively marginalized and disavowed intimations of homo-affectivity and homoeroticism in the great Spanish works. This book first appeared in Spain in 1991 as counter-discourse against those prevailing ideological structures. Before its appearance, no significant work had focused on the position of Spanish culture towards homosexuality or on how homosexuality could affect the works of canonical writers. Engaging with homosexuality as an imperative source of meaning in artistic work, this volume rigorously studies the works of Federico Garcia Lorca and several of his marginalized homosexual contemporaries, including Emilio Prados, Luis Cernuda, Juan Gil-Albert, and Salvador Dali. The study relies on the textual evidence presented by these authors to define the homosexual culture as one plagued by the realities of rejection, fear of the law, self-doubts, the lack of an authorized language with which to convey emotions, the awareness of disgust around the individual, the need to accept marginality to find sexual or emotional satisfaction, and the knowledge of one's own social divergence, all of which have an enormous influence on any artist's work. With this new and updated translation, this work offers English-speaking readers the opportunity to focus on formal aspects of literary expressions of homosexuality.

Book Phenomenology of Perception Classic Reprint

Download or read book Phenomenology of Perception Classic Reprint written by Maurice Merleau-Ponty and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These are the codified thoughts that allowed Maurice Merleau-Ponty the opportunity to establish himself as a first rate philosopher. The world of philosophy has neglected the body for centuries, if not millennia, Phenomenology of Perception brings the most central part of our world back into the way we think about it. He crashed onto the scene and burned some of the most darling philosophical landmarks of his forebears in effigy. This book is generally held to be a decisive example of existentialism, particularly existentialist work in the French fashion, although there is far more than the vague imagined scent of a galloise on the pages. Existentialism is far from the only influence on the work. The discerning reader will see echoes of Plato's forms in Merleau-Ponty's essences and even an implicit critique of the idea. For the philosopher en chaise, the daring criticism of even Cartesian doubt is thrilling; it feels like jumping on the bed while Socrates isn't looking. Merleau-Ponty utterly rejects the mind-body duality put forward by so many of the giants of our philosophical ancestry in favour of an argument which emphasises the instrumental aspects of consciousness and our full and visceral habitation of our flesh. Gnaw on the questions that he will raise in your mind about whether huge assumptions have been made about the nature of consciousness and how that links to our physical selves. If only for a moment, throw your perceived certainties aside and engage with the idea that your very consciousness may not be what you think. Book International Handbook of Interpretation in Educational Research

Download or read book International Handbook of Interpretation in Educational Research written by Paul Smeyers and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-01-06 with total page 1645 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook focuses on the often neglected dimension of interpretation in educational research. It argues that all educational research is in some sense ‘interpretive’, and that understanding this issue belies some usual dualisms of thought and practice, such as the sharp dichotomy between ‘qualitative’ and ‘quantitative’ research. Interpretation extends from the very framing of the research task, through the sources which constitute the data, the process of their recording, representation and analysis, to the way in which the research is finally or provisionally presented. The thesis of the handbook is that interpretation cuts across the fields (both philosophically, organizationally and methodologically). By covering a comprehensive range of research approaches and methodologies, the handbook gives (early career) researchers what they need to know in order to decide what particular methods can offer for various educational research contexts/fields. An extensive overview includes concrete examples of different kinds of research (not limited for example to ‘teaching’ and ‘learning’ examples as present in the Anglo-Saxon tradition, but including as well what in the German Continental tradition is labelled ‘pädagogisch’, examples from child rearing and other contexts of non-formal education) with full description and explanation of why these were chosen in particular circumstances and reflection on the wisdom or otherwise of the choice – combined in each case with consideration of the role of interpretation in the process. The handbook includes examples of a large number of methods traditionally classified as qualitative, interpretive and quantitative used across the area of the study of education. Examples are drawn from across the globe, thus exemplifying the different ‘opportunities and constraints’ that educational research has to confront in different societies.
