Even when extreme trauma is silenced, it often still emerges in surprising and painful ways. This volume draws together examples from throughout the Francophone world, including countries such as Algeria, Morocco, Lebanon, Rwanda, Cameroon, Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, Haiti, New Caledonia, Quebec and France, and across genres such as autobiography, poetry, theater, film, fiction and visual art to provide a cohesive analysis of the representation of trauma. In addition to the survivors’ expression of trauma, the witnesses and receivers are also taken into account. By gathering studies that explore diverse bodily and psychological traumas through tropes such as repetition, silence and working-through, it tackles ethical responsibility and interrogates how expressive forms evoke a terrible reality through the use of imagination. The aim of this volume is not to question if suffering is representable, but rather to examine to what extent art surpasses its own limitations and goes straight to its essence. The Unspeakable hopes to provide models for the cultural translation of trauma, because, when represented and released from silence and isolation, trauma can give way to the arduous process of healing.

From the formation of Maroon societies in the early colonial period, to female mobilisation in authoritarian contexts, via urban youth culture, women or mineworkers in trade unionism, as well as pro- and anti- gay rights activists, the protagonists here all insist upon their rights to protest in a variety of ways. Sometimes popular protest is expressed through religion, often (and sometimes violently) by young people, exasperated by their long wait for social achievement. Electoral wars and the formation of militias reveal a geography of violence in urban areas, which, in some sectarian excesses, can be displaced to rural areas, as described in the study on Boko Haram. Intermédiaires et interlocuteurs malgaches, indispensables pour la compréhension de leurs sociétés, accompagnent ces Vazaha avec lesquels ils nouent des relations complexes. La connaissance de la Grande île s'enrichit ici de l'exploitation de documents conservés dans différents pays : à Madagascar et en France, ruais aussi en Grande-Bretagne, aux Pays-Bas, en Norvège et même en Afrique du Sud ; elle bénéficie par ailleurs du retour de certains chercheurs sur leur terrain. Le recours à des sources jusqu'alors inutilisées, la relecture d'autres relativement connues et l'attachement des auteurs (historiens, anthropologues et sociologues) à l'interdisciplinarité contribuent au renouvellement de sujets classiques, comme l'impact de la traite et la " découverte " de l'Ile par des voyageurs. Les thèmes de la diffusion du christianisme et du statut des devins-guérisseurs sont également revisités. Des chercheurs reviennent sur les questions de l'autochtonie et des sources de l'autorité. Enfin, cet ouvrage offre des perspectives sur des chantiers récemment ouverts ou, pour certains, encore peu travaillés. II en est ainsi des travaux autour des nouvelles Eglises et de la communauté malgache en France. Sans faire I'objet d'un texte spécifique, la Coopération française dans la Grande Ile occupe une place fondamentale dans les deux articles sur la trajectoire de Françoise Raison-Jourde, ancienne coopérante à Madagascar qui, avec d'autres collègues, vient de lancer, dans le cadre du Laboratoire Sociétés en développement études transdisciplinaires (SEDET), une enquête sur les coopérants en Afrique.
