Over the course of her prolific career, Thomas has created a body of work that expands notions of beauty, gender, sexuality, and race, offering a complex vision of what it means to be a Black woman. In Femmes Noires, Thomas moves breezily between pop culture and the long history of Western and African art, inserting images of Black women into iconic paintings. At times she poses them nude; at other times, she draws on elements as diverse as 1970s black-is-beautiful images of women, Edouard Mamet's odalisque figures, the mise-en-sc'ne studio portraiture of James Van Der Zee and Malick Sidib?, and her own collection of personal portraits and staged scenes. Her ability to detect and contain contradictions and to wrestle with stereotypes translates into powerful, self-possessed depictions of Black women that confront and subvert stereotypes. Femmes Noires is a bold examination of Thomas's work and her artistic practise at an important moment in history. It blends writing from iconic Black writers and essayists (Alice Walker, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Edwidge Danticat, and Lorraine O'Grady) with 120 reproductions from Thomas's oeuvre (collages, paintings, film stills, and photographs). Original essays by Andrea Andersson, visual arts curator of the Contemporary Art Center of New Orleans; Julie Crooks, curator at the Art Gallery of Ontario; and writer-art critic Antwaun Sargent complete the book. Mickalene Thomas: Femmes Noires accompanies an international touring exhibition organized by the Art Gallery of Ontario and the Contemporary Art Centre in New Orleans. It will open at the AGO in late November 2018.

Si les Twas dans leur ensemble souffrent de discrimination, de marginalisation et d’extrême pauvreté, combien plus les femmes twas en souffrent-elles. Cette situation a été récemment exacerbée par le violent conflit qui a secoué la région. Dorothy Jackson possède de nombreuses années d’expérience et de travail aux côtés des communautés twas de la région et des femmes twas en particulier. On devine clairement les voix des femmes twas dans ce rapport, qui plaident pour des changements et la reconnaissance de leurs droits – en tant qu’autochtones et en tant que femmes. Malgré la discrimination et la pauvreté qui sont leur lot quotidien, elles sont pleines d’énergie, d’idées et de courage, ce que ce rapport suffit à démontrer. La question foncière est aujourd’hui de premier ordre pour les femmes comme pour les communautés twas. Les Twas étaient traditionnellement dépendants des forêts et des territoires sur lesquelles ils vivaient. Or aujourd’hui, la plupart des Twas sont sans terre. Leur culture et leur existence même sont en danger. Qui plus est, les changements profonds qui affectent aujourd’hui leurs sociétés sont en train de remettre en question le statut traditionnel d’égalité entre hommes et femmes. Ce rapport présente les politiques gouvernementales et les instruments juridiques internationaux relatifs aux droits humains que les Twas et les organisations qui les soutiennent pourraient utiliser au Burundi, en Ouganda, en République démocratique du Congo et au Rwanda. En guise de conclusion, le rapport offre des recommandations aux gouvernements de ces Etats et aux organisations de développement.

Steady begins her examination in pre-colonial times, moving through the colonial period to the present. She looks at the various arenas which collective action has and can influence, comparing the impact on economic growth, education, democratizations, family formation, and women's rights. Steady uses Sierra Leone as the focus of her inquiry, in order for a detailed story to illustrate larger themes, but in every area makes comparisons to different parts of Africa; the case study here guides a larger inquiry. Written as a text, the book carefully explains the theoretical ideas (e.g., all key terms are defined, and then there is a discussion of how they relate to African issues specifically) and the historical knowledge (e.g., all historical events are described, there is no assumption of knowledge of African history) necessary to understand the meaning of current women's groups. What results is a clear and comprehensive treatment of an issue which is increasingly central to understanding changes taking place on the African continent today.

In An Intimate Rebuke Laura S. Grillo draws on fieldwork in Côte d’Ivoire that spans three decades to illustrate how these rituals of Female Genital Power (FGP) constitute religious and political responses to abuses of power. When deployed in secret, FGP operates as spiritual warfare against witchcraft; in public, it serves as a political activism. During Côte d’Ivoire’s civil wars FGP challenged the immoral forces of both rebels and the state. Grillo shows how the ritual potency of the Mothers’ nudity and the conjuration of their sex embodies a moral power that has been foundational to West African civilization.
