Its goal is to analyze the historically violent social context for women in the State of Roraima, as well as the expressive exponential increase on the rates of violence against women and several forms, as to verify the invisibility of the female gender before public institutions. Its methodological approach is descriptive and qualitative. The first chapter approaches the tolerance displayed by society when it comes to domestic violence and sexism, as well as the connivance of the State to its occurrence. The lack of effectiveness of Human Rights dictated in legal milestones as well as the lack of accountability of the National States on the subject is also discussed. The second chapter discusses the legal devices for the protection of women in Brazil, with special attention to the Bill of Law 11.340, commonly known as the Maria da Penha Law, and its impact on how Brazil deals with domestic and familial violence. It also analyzes the forms of gender, domestic, and familial violence. The third chapter analyzes the history of violence against women, through an analysis of the historical terminology used to describe it, as well as demonstrating the growing rates of feminicide and violence against women which have been previously mentioned.

Inequality levels have been reduced and political trends have resulted in the election of female politicians throughout the continent, corresponding with a revival of gender politics and feminist movements. At the same time, however, countries like Brazil are still home to gender discrimination and inequality, with high levels of domestic violence towards women, low levels of political representation, a culture of machismo, and the enduring predominance of stereotypical gender representations in the media. Globalization, Gender Politics, and the Media looks at the correlation between gender inequality in society with media representations, situating the case of Brazil and Latin America within the global quest for gender justice. It emphasizes the need to equate material and economic concerns with the examination of the reproduction of values and beliefs on gender through cultural and media outlets. Book excerpt: Considering the importance of legal frameworks in laying down governance and accountability frameworks, clarifying the responsibilities of relevant public and private entities and defining the long term and budgetary commitment of states, the capacity of countries to adopt and enforce laws in pertinent areas is crucial to reducing rural poverty. Countries have signed up to international and regional instruments that are of relevance to rural poverty and have adopted policies and legislation in these areas. However, a number of normative, institutional and operational challenges exist in different countries. These include regulatory gaps in some areas such as social security for agricultural workers; the existence of laws that sustain discriminatory practices, for example, in relation to inheritance of property; and inconsistencies in norms and institutional mandates in the area of natural resource governance. Even with relatively good laws, their practical implementation may be wanting due to limitations of capacity to implement them. These problems would require a range of measures on the part of state and non‐state actors, including the adoption or revision of laws as well as awareness‐raising and legal empowerment. This legal paper explores the significance of legislative frameworks to poverty reduction efforts, with a particular focus on human rights. It highlights sectoral areas for legislative intervention and identifies normative, procedural and institutional challenges that states encounter while implementing poverty reduction programmes. It further refers to examples from state practice and provides recommendations on how relevant actors can make use of legislation to address rural poverty.
