Book Marooned in the Arctic

Download or read book Marooned in the Arctic written by Peggy Caravantes and published by Chicago Review Press. This book was released on 2016-03-01 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Notable Social Studies Trade Book for Young People 2017 In 1921, four men ventured into the Arctic for a top-secret expedition: an attempt to claim uninhabited Wrangel Island in northern Siberia for Great Britain. With the men was a young Inuit woman named Ada Blackjack, who had signed on as cook and seamstress to earn money to care for her sick son. Conditions soon turned dire for the team when they were unable to kill enough game to survive. Three of the men tried to cross the frozen Chukchi Sea for help but were never seen again, leaving Ada with one remaining team member who soon died of scurvy. Determined to be reunited with her son, Ada learned to survive alone in the icy world by trapping foxes, catching seals, and avoiding polar bears. After she was finally rescued in August 1923, after two years total on the island, Ada became a celebrity, with newspapers calling her a real "female Robinson Crusoe." The first young adult book about Blackjack's remarkable story, Marooned in the Arctic includes sidebars on relevant topics of interest to teens, including the use cats on ships, the phenomenon known as Arctic hysteria, and aspects of Inuit culture and beliefs. With excerpts from diaries, letters, and telegrams; historic photos; a map; source notes; and a bibliography, this is an indispensible resource for any young adventure lover, classroom, or library.

Book The Female Crusoe

Download or read book The Female Crusoe written by C. M. Owen and published by Brill Rodopi. This book was released on 2010 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does the story of Robinson Crusoe have to do with understanding past and present women's lives? The Female Crusoe: Hybridity, Trade and the Eighteenth-Century Individual investigates the possibility that Daniel Defoe's famous work was informed by qualities attributed to trade, luxury and credit and described as feminine in the period. In this volume, Robinson Crusoe and the female castaway narratives published in its wake emerge as texts of social criticism that draw on neglected values of race and gender to challenge the dominant values of society. Such narratives worked to establish status and authority for marginalised characters and subjects who were as different, and as similar, as Defoe's gentleman-tradesman and Wollstonecraft's independent woman. The Female Crusoe goes on to address the twentieth-century engagement with the castaway tale, showing how three contemporary authors, in their complex and gendered negotiations of power and identity, echo, even while they challenge, the concerns of their eighteenth-century predecessors. This work will be of interest to students interested in literary engagements with individualism and women's rights in the eighteenth and twentieth centuries.

Excerpt: ... trackless forest, each feeling new and highly exciting, and well calculated to impress itself and its associations firmly and lucidly on my mind. I had not so many affairs to occupy my thoughts as a member of refined society has. During my first and many subsequent sufferings, I was entirely alone. I was not engaged in conversation, or reading, with companions. My mind was continually dwelling upon the most trifling incidents; and the events of that dreary period, were thus so indelibly stamped upon my memory, that I do not run much risk of any great mistakes, by thus detailing particulars from one agitating occurrence, and one critical moment to another. And when I did temporarily enjoy a companion, our mutual alternate perils and pleasures were almost exclusively the constant theme of our converse, for there were but the feelings of only two persons to talk about At any rate, for the sake of gratifying the reader with a continuous story, I have ventured to write, as if memory had yielded up to my bidding, all the minute circumstances as they actually transpired. Another single word as to the cognomen of this work, and I have done with all prefatory observations. A male friend was looking at my manuscript, which was the production of leisure hours, after I had been relieved from solitude and grown to maturity, and had commenced my education, while I was yet learning, as if a mere little school-girl, the rudiments of the art of reading and writing. Although I wrote without a view to publication, yet my friend remarked, that the reading world ought to have the particulars of my narrative, and that "Female Robinson Crusoe" would be quite a characteristic title. So now, dear readers, ladies and gentlemen, the former fair and young, the...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mancini Sisters, Marie and Hortense, were born in Rome, brought to the court of Louis XIV of France, and strategically married off by their uncle, Cardinal Mazarin, to secure his political power base. Such was the life of many young women of the age: they had no independent status under the law and were entirely a part of their husband's property once married. Marie and Hortense, however, had other ambitions in mind altogether. Miserable in their marriages and determined to live independently, they abandoned their husbands in secret and began lives of extraordinary daring on the run and in the public eye. The beguiling sisters quickly won the affections of noblemen and kings alike. Their flight became popular fodder for salon conversation and tabloids, and was closely followed by seventeenth-century European society. The Countess of Grignan remarked that they were traveling "like two heroines out of a novel." Others gossiped that they "were roaming the countryside in pursuit of wandering lovers. "Their scandalous behavior -- disguising themselves as men, gambling, and publicly disputing with their husbands -- served as more than just entertainment. It sparked discussions across Europe concerning the legal rights of husbands over their wives. Elizabeth Goldsmith's vibrant biography of the Mancini sisters -- drawn from personal papers of the players involved and the tabloids of the time -- illuminates the lives of two pioneering free spirits who were feminists long before the word existed.
