Book excerpt: Abstract : Islam is the most misunderstood religion in the world, and the status of Muslim women is even more misinterpreted. There have been relatively few studies of Islamic educational leaders and even fewer specifically addressing female Islamic educational leadership. Although women have made tremendous progress in the labor force, the proportion of women in leadership positions remains problematic still. This study addresses a gap in the literature by providing a quantitative assessment of the main characteristics of female principals of Islamic schools in the United States.This study was an exploration of the prevalence, obstacles, challenges, perceptions, and experiences of female leaders in Islamic schools, as well as possible reasons for the discrepancy between the number of female teachers and the number of females holding leadership positions in Islamic schools.This study used a quantitative research method. A 48-question survey was sent electronically to all female principals of Islamic schools throughout the entire continental United States to obtain data and to examine and address the two research questions. The study sample consisted of 52 principals representing 52% of the overall eligible population of women holding the position of principal in an Islamic school in the United States.The analysis of the survey findings suggested that lack of family support, negative attitude regarding women as leaders, and lack of educational opportunity are the main barriers that the sample of female principals in this study perceived as restricting administrative opportunities for women principals or women aspiring to be principals. Additionally, there was a consensus that self confidence and intelligence are the two most important traits that impact women positively in attaining leadership positions in Islamic schools. The respondents further revealed that having a good education and being a good communicator are just as important as the previous two factors.

Book excerpt: In this dynamic era of change the educational landscape in North America offers parents a plethora of choices when it comes to educating their children. Muslim American parents are no exception to this phenomenon, specifically after the world was shaken on September 11th, 2001. Muslim professionals saw an opening in the market, and so Islamic schools proliferated through the country. A priori studies on Islamic schools have focused on the perceptions held by school leaders of the effects of their leadership style on school climate; the gap in literature has provided the impetus for this research. As such, this qualitative, Interpretative Phenomenological study uses servant leadership theory, school climate theory, and aligns these with Islamic leadership theory to create a lens, to describe the understandings and perceptions held by Islamic school teachers of their experiences with school leadership, and its perceived effects on school climate. The results from this study indicate a few salient and noteworthy points; first, the culture of nepotism in Islamic schools indicates that employees may not always be treated equally; next, teachers confirmed that their state of mind is what led to the positive climate that they experienced. Moreover, they reported a lack of transparency between leaders and stakeholders. A lack of cultural competency as well as a deficiency in academic proficiency regarding policy and curriculum meant that leaders were ill prepared to deal with common issues. Participants also reported the common use of religious guilt and most prominently, the implementation of a dictatorship under the guise of the Islamic shura Ideology, which promotes mutual consultation and honors the voice of subordinates. The findings of this study will provide Islamic school organizations with a foundation for assessing the role of principal leadership, specifically with regards to its effect on school climate. Furthermore, this research will enable schools to modify credentialing and continued professional development requirements for their principals, as well supporting ongoing research regarding leadership in Islamic schools. Cultural constraints make it challenging for many ethnic minority individuals (particularly women) to speak openly about disparities that they deal with on a daily basis; to some this is considered a form of disloyalty or treachery, to which end, this research will provide the stimulus for dialogue amongst Islamic school boards and teachers.

Book excerpt: This study employed a quantitative research design using a mail survey to explore leadership style in Islamic schools in the United States. The purpose of the study was to describe levels of transformational and transactional leadership of American Muslim principals. Correlational analyses were used to determine the relationship between principal and teacher reports of principals' use of transformational leadership and the relationship of demographic variables to perceptions of transformational leadership. Multiple regression analyses showed that none of the six demographic variables were significant predictors of the variance in principal- or teacher-reported use of transformational leadership. Thirty-three principals responded to the MLQ 5X self-rating form and 143 teachers responded to the MLQ 5X other-rating form. Principals rated themselves higher than their teachers on transformational leadership and lower than their teachers on transactional leadership. Both principals and teachers ranked principals highest in Inspirational Motivation and lowest in Management-by-Exception Passive. Principals rated themselves as being more intellectually stimulating and less often using contingent reward. In schools where teachers were more congruent in their ratings of the principal, they tended to perceive the principals as more transformational than did teachers in schools where teachers were less congruent in their ratings. It appears that where principals are more consistent in their interactions with teachers, teachers have higher opinions of the principal as a transformational leader. Both teachers and principals rated principals of American Muslim schools as fairly high in the use of both transformational and transactional leadership. Comparisons of these findings to other research in the U.S. suggest that American Muslim principals exhibit leadership characteristics very similar to those of other U.S. principals.
