Book excerpt: Excerpt from Woman's Rights and Duties, Vol. 1 of 2: Considered With Relation to Their Influence on Society and on Her Own Condition In moral inquiries of a practical nature life the present, anything pretending to novelty would be in great danger of becoming paradoxical. But if truths that are generally admitted are also very often neglected, it shows, either that their importance has not been adequately felt, or that the manner of applying them to practice has not been made sufficiently evident to common understandings. When circumstances are such as to exhibit the consequences of some error very strongly, truths that had been habitually disregarded, acquire force and activity. This occurred in America with respect to intemperance, and a rapid and remarkable change is said to have taken place. We find, therefore, that people can sometimes be led, by regard for the interests of society, to practise self-control; and it is not too much to expect also in other cases, that if the mischiefs which flow from certain false principles can be made equally evident, the languid assent yielded to a general maxim may be converted to practical conviction. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Woman and Her Era, Vol. 1 Women from the legal and social disabilities under which the sex has labored from the beginning. If the wife of the dissolute husband can hold in her own right, the means of saving her children from starvation and ignorance; if the ranks of self-supporting Women find new and more remu nerative fields Open to them; if the Wronged Woman breathes a more human atmosphere of compassion, tender ness, and respect - healers, all, of the hurt she has suffered; if the Society of our day realizes, in its high need, the more fluent power of Woman to purify, inspire, and uplift it to higher motives and better regulated action; if the diviner tenderness of the feminine life is taking more distinct forms of potentiality over the selfishness and ferocity of former ages, we have to thank, more than any other party or organization, the brave Women of our generation who have persistently striven for these objects, bearing, mean while, the inevitable reproach and contumely of such a Reform, but never abandoning it. And if the views herein contained, are to receive a more liberal hearing now than they could have at the period of their advent into my own mind, that favorable circumstance, according to my judgment, is due mainly to these efforts. And I am grateful for them - not so much because they have prepared an audience for my word, as for any Truth of Woman, from any source. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DIVDIVSusan Brownmiller’s groundbreaking bestseller uncovers the culture of violence against women with a devastating exploration of the history of rape—now with a new preface by the author exposing the undercurrents of rape still present today/divDIV Rape, as author Susan Brownmiller proves in her startling and important book, is not about sex but about power, fear, and subjugation. For thousands of years, it has been viewed as an acceptable “spoil of war,” used as a weapon by invading armies to crush the will of the conquered. The act of rape against women has long been cloaked in lies and false justifications./divDIV It is ignored, tolerated, even encouraged by governments and military leaders, misunderstood by police and security organizations, freely employed by domineering husbands and lovers, downplayed by medical and legal professionals more inclined to “blame the victim,” and, perhaps most shockingly, accepted in supposedly civilized societies worldwide, including the United States./divDIV Against Our Will is a classic work that has been widely credited with changing prevailing attitudes about violence against women by awakening the public to the true and continuing tragedy of rape around the globe and throughout the ages./divDIV Selected by the New York Times Book Review as an Outstanding Book of the Year and included among the New York Public Library’s Books of the Century, Against Our Will remains an essential work of sociological and historical importance./divDIV/div/div

Book Conduct Literature for Women Part IV 1770 1830 vol 1

Download or read book Conduct Literature for Women Part IV 1770 1830 vol 1 written by Pam Morris and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-28 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection aims to give a chronological insight into the evolution of conduct literature, from its early roots in the Renaissance period through to the dramatically different role that women played at the emergence of the 20th century. The material presented in this six-volume set moves away from courtly etiquette, adopting a more middle-class, domestic focus, and includes facsimile reproductions of sermons, poems, narratives and cookery books.Social and literary historians recognise the 1790s as a moment of political crisis and turbulence in British history: the intense reactions in Britain to increasing revolutionary violence in France politicised almost every aspect of cultural life. At the centre of discursive hostilities was the opposition between sentimentality, on the one hand, and rationality, on the other. Two of the most important literary forms utilised for expressing these polemics were novels and treatises on education, as well as conduct writing. Conduct Literature for Women IV, 1770-1830 makes available this body of writing, which has been less well studied in respect to the war of ideas than the former two.

Book Sermons to Young Women Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Sermons to Young Women Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint written by James Fordyce and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-04-16 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sermons to Young Women is a book originally published in 1809 and written by Scottish Presbyterian minister James Fordyce. The sermons were intended to be a moral guide for young women growing up in the nineteenth century, but now serves as an interesting historical examination of the attitudes towards girls at the time of its writing. Many of the sermons included in this collection were originally delivered orally by the author and recorded in text at a later date. The book includes a total of fourteen sermons that are divided into two volumes, both of which appear in this collection. Topics addressed include modesty of apparel, female reserve, friendship and conversation, domestic accomplishment, female piety, good deeds, female meekness, and several more. The sermons all carry a certain paternalistic tone, with Fordyce lecturing on what he deems best practices for young women of the day. It is clear that Sermons for Young Women was a product of a specific era, as the essays included paint women as primarily suited for a domestic life, and proper etiquette seems to mean being subservient to men. Fordyce's work is thus an interesting historical document that informs readers of gender roles and expectations in the late 1700s and early 1800s. Those who read with a keen eye for detail should be able to compose a fairly detailed mental image of the home life of young women at the time of this book's publication. While certainly no longer valid as a set of moral guidelines, James Fordyce's Sermons to Young Women is nonetheless an interesting examination of attitudes towards gender roles. Students of women's studies and historians will appreciate the wealth of information to be gleaned from this writing, and anybody interested in household life in the 1700s will likely find this to be an interesting read. It will be as well, therefore, to risk a few preliminary remarks on the nature of that bond of society, good-breeding, to ensure our dramatis personae a polite, if not a cordial reception. Good-breeding is defined by Mr. Locke, as consisting in the possession of a due degree of respect for ourselves, combined with a due degree of respect for others. Book Woman as She Should Be Classic Reprint

Download or read book Woman as She Should Be Classic Reprint written by Hubbard Winslow and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-27 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Woman as She Should Be The three first chapters of this volume were ori ginally prepared and preached by the author to his people, in a course of evening lectures, without any expectation of publishing them. The circumstances of the times led to the publication of the first one, in the Religious Magazine and separately. It has been some time out of print, and several individuals have signified a request that the other two might be pub lished in connection with another edition of it. They have been accordingly submitted to the publishers, to be issued in the present form and connection. The first chapter is designed to indicate the sphere in which Christianity instructs woman to move and act; the second, to show what Christianity has done for her, and to exhibit the reasons why more women than men become pious; the third, to illus trate what is implied in the true Christian education of woman. I have employed the Saxon term, wo man, considering it to be in truer taste, though less in use, than the somewhat vulgarized term lady.
