Download or read book Inescapable Ecologies written by Linda Nash and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2007-01-05 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the most far-reaching effects of the modern environmental movement was the widespread acknowledgment that human beings were inescapably part of a larger ecosystem. With this book, Linda Nash gives us a wholly original and much longer history of "ecological" ideas of the body as that history unfolded in California’s Central Valley. Taking us from nineteenth-century fears of miasmas and faith in wilderness cures to the recent era of chemical pollution and cancer clusters, Nash charts how Americans have connected their diseases to race and place as well as dirt and germs. In this account, the rise of germ theory and the pushing aside of an earlier environmental approach to illness constituted not a clear triumph of modern biomedicine but rather a brief period of modern amnesia. As Nash shows us, place-based accounts of illness re-emerged in the postwar decades, galvanizing environmental protest against smog and toxic chemicals. Carefully researched and richly conceptual, Inescapable Ecologies brings critically important insights to the histories of environment, culture, and public health, while offering a provocative commentary on the human relationship to the larger world.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Female Health and Hygiene on the Pacific Coast No apology is necessary for an attempt to lessen, the amount of human suffering by explaining the causes of disease, and pointing out the principles, of its prevention. There is no unobjectionable popular work upon the subject of female hygiene and the many admirable instructions scattered through the texts books are not accessible to general readers. A long and varied medical experience of nearly forty years, of which many were passed in the English metropolis, has convinced me of the growing importance of popularising preventive medicine; whilst my early experiences in this city clearly demonstrated the desirability of directing the attention of the ladies to improved physical development and personal hygiene. After so short a residence I do not pretend to have obtained by any means a complete insight into all the characteristics of Californian society, or to have fathomed the bottom of female mistakes and weaknesses. I have sought the most reliable sources of information for my facts. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: An absorbing look at the role of disease and health policy in the construction of race, gender, and class and in urban development in nineteenth- and twentieth-century San Francisco. "Craddock's provocative work offers an invaluable perspective on public health and the construction of race that speaks not only to the past but also to the present." -Bulletin of the History of Medicine "City of Plagues should fuel excitement and increase other geographers' notice of the remarkable work emanating from it. It simply and brilliantly traces how the often-argued triad of power/knowledge/space actually works in a particular place, at a particular time, and around a particular issue. Meticulous and nuanced." -Environment and Planning D: Society and Space "This book provides an engaging, readable, and well-researched account of the social, political, and medical responses to infectious diseases in San Francisco from the mid-nineteenth century to the present day. A wealth of material is brought together to describe, in a geographical, historical, and cultural framework, the experience, among San Francisco's population, of diseases such as tuberculosis, smallpox, syphilis and other sexually transmitted diseases, plague, and, latterly, HIV and AIDS." -Environment and Planning A Susan Craddock is associate professor in the Department of Women's Studies and the Institute for Global Studies at the University of Minnesota.

Book excerpt: "As an installment of UGA Press's 'History in the Headlines' series, this book offers a rich discussion between highly respected scholars on the historical backdrop and context for contemporary "issues" (from the headlines). In addition to the historical context, these "conversations" demonstrate how historians speak to one another about contentious topics and can contribute in meaningful ways to the public's understanding. This volume focuses on the historical perspective to discussions of abortion and women's rights in the aftermath of the Dobbs decision that overturned Roe V. Wade"--
