Book excerpt: Essential reading for our times, as women are pulling together to demand their rights— A landmark portrait of women, men, and power in a transformed world. “Anchored by data and aromatized by anecdotes, [Rosin] concludes that women are gaining the upper hand." –The Washington Post Men have been the dominant sex since, well, the dawn of mankind. But Hanna Rosin was the first to notice that this long-held truth is, astonishingly, no longer true. Today, by almost every measure, women are no longer gaining on men: They have pulled decisively ahead. And “the end of men”—the title of Rosin’s Atlantic cover story on the subject—has entered the lexicon as dramatically as Betty Friedan’s “feminine mystique,” Simone de Beauvoir’s “second sex,” Susan Faludi’s “backlash,” and Naomi Wolf’s “beauty myth” once did. In this landmark book, Rosin reveals how our current state of affairs is radically shifting the power dynamics between men and women at every level of society, with profound implications for marriage, sex, children, work, and more. With wide-ranging curiosity and insight unhampered by assumptions or ideology, Rosin shows how the radically different ways men and women today earn, learn, spend, couple up—even kill—has turned the big picture upside down. And in The End of Men she helps us see how, regardless of gender, we can adapt to the new reality and channel it for a better future.

Download or read book Social Dominance written by Jim Sidanius and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2001-02-12 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume focuses on two questions: why do people from one social group oppress and discriminate against people from other groups? and why is this oppression so mind numbingly difficult to eliminate? The answers to these questions are framed using the conceptual framework of social dominance theory. Social dominance theory argues that the major forms of intergroup conflict, such as racism, classism and patriarchy, are all basically derived from the basic human predisposition to form and maintain hierarchical and group-based systems of social organization. In essence, social dominance theory presumes that, beneath major and sometimes profound difference between different human societies, there is also a basic grammar of social power shared by all societies in common. We use social dominance theory in an attempt to identify the elements of this grammar and to understand how these elements interact and reinforce each other to produce and maintain group-based social hierarchy.

Book excerpt: Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a dominant woman who can control a man with just a look or a word? When the thoughts of being in control creep into your head, that sexy little smile starts to play over your lips, and you start to get some ideas that you want to try on your man. As women, we have all been there, but being women, many of us are unable to take hold of our control and dominate a man. The idea of being a dominatrix is often seen as a sexual and social taboo, and many women are afraid of what society would say, what our family and friends would think, and in general, we feel that it isn't the position of a woman to take the stance of power and control. Women are seen naturally as the weaker sex, the one to be protected by a man, and the man in the relationship is often seen to be in control, the leader, the strong and dominant one. Social norms often dictate how we feel about ourselves, and sometimes, it can hinder who we really are inside.Take heed, ladies. We are women. We are strong. We are powerful. We are fierce. We are romantic. We are dynamic. We are caring. We are fighters. We are lovers. We are women! This manual will give you an inside look on what being a Mistress is really all about and will give you insight on how to be a Mistress. Being a Mistress isn't all about leather outfits, stiletto heels, and a whip in your hand. It is a journey between you and your partner, where you are the leader, you are in control, and you have the final say. It is a path of adventure where you make the choices, you take charge, and where you can let all of your inhibitions go. It will give you insight into a new you, the one who has been trapped behind the social norms for far too long.Ladies, welcome your inner Mistress!

Book Women After All Sex Evolution and the End of Male Supremacy

Download or read book Women After All Sex Evolution and the End of Male Supremacy written by Melvin Konner and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2015-03-09 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A sparkling, thought-provoking account of sexual differences. Whether you’re a man or a woman, you’ll find his conclusions gripping.”—Jared Diamond There is a human genetic fluke that is surprisingly common, due to a change in a key pair of chromosomes. In the normal condition the two look the same, but in this disorder one is malformed and shrunken beyond recognition. The result is a shortened life span, higher mortality at all ages, an inability to reproduce, premature hair loss, and brain defects variously resulting in attention deficit, hyperactivity, conduct disorder, hypersexuality, and an enormous excess of both outward and self-directed aggression. It is called maleness. Melvin Konner traces the arc of evolution to explain the relationships between women and men. With patience and wit he explores the knotty question of whether men are necessary in the biological destiny of the human race. He draws on multiple, colorful examples from the natural world—such as the mating habits of the octopus, black widow, angler fish, and jacana—and argues that maleness in humans is hardly necessary to the survival of the species. In characteristically humorous and engaging prose, Konner sheds light on our biologically different identities, while noting the poignant exceptions that challenge the male/female divide. We meet hunter-gatherers such as those in Botswana, whose culture gave women a prominent place, invented the working mother, and respected women’s voices around the fire. Recent human history has upset this balance, as a dense world of war fostered extreme male dominance. But our species has been recovering over the past two centuries, and an unstoppable move toward equality is afoot. It will not be the end of men, but it will be the end of male supremacy and a better, wiser world for women and men alike.
