Book excerpt: A study of the relationship between residential mobility, family problems, and feelings of alienation on the part of the Army wife-mother was undertaken. It was found that there was a very strong and direct correlation between feelings of alienation and family problems in general. There was also a direct and significant, although weaker, correlation between lack of identification with the Military Community and family problems in general. The analysis also revealed a strong and direct correlation between feelings of alienation and family problems associated with moving. There was also a direct correlation between lack of identification with the Military Community and family problems associated with moving. The analysis also revealed that while there was a strong and direct correlation between feelings of alienation and lack of identification with the Military community, these concepts are not identical entities. Of particular significance was the finding that those families who seemed to have the greatest number of family problems in moving also tend to use community resources the least. That is, the ones who need the help most get it least.

In addition, rising family diversity and complexity will likely increase the difficulty of creating military policies, programs and practices that adequately support families in the performance of military duties. Strengthening the Military Family Readiness System for a Changing American Society examines the challenges and opportunities facing military families and what is known about effective strategies for supporting and protecting military children and families, as well as lessons to be learned from these experiences. This report offers recommendations regarding what is needed to strengthen the support system for military families.
