Book Doing Good Better

Download or read book Doing Good Better written by William MacAskill and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2015-07-28 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of us want to make a difference. We donate our time and money to charities and causes we deem worthy, choose careers we consider meaningful, and patronize businesses and buy products we believe make the world a better place. Unfortunately, we often base these decisions on assumptions and emotions rather than facts. As a result, even our best intentions often lead to ineffective—and sometimes downright harmful—outcomes. How can we do better? While a researcher at Oxford, trying to figure out which career would allow him to have the greatest impact, William MacAskill confronted this problem head on. He discovered that much of the potential for change was being squandered by lack of information, bad data, and our own prejudice. As an antidote, he and his colleagues developed effective altruism, a practical, data-driven approach that allows each of us to make a tremendous difference regardless of our resources. Effective altruists believe that it’s not enough to simply do good; we must do good better. At the core of this philosophy are five key questions that help guide our altruistic decisions: How many people benefit, and by how much? Is this the most effective thing I can do? Is this area neglected? What would have happened otherwise? What are the chances of success, and how good would success be? By applying these questions to real-life scenarios, MacAskill shows how many of our assumptions about doing good are misguided. For instance, he argues one can potentially save more lives by becoming a plastic surgeon rather than a heart surgeon; measuring overhead costs is an inaccurate gauge of a charity’s effectiveness; and, it generally doesn’t make sense for individuals to donate to disaster relief. MacAskill urges us to think differently, set aside biases, and use evidence and careful reasoning rather than act on impulse. When we do this—when we apply the head and the heart to each of our altruistic endeavors—we find that each of us has the power to do an astonishing amount of good.

Book The Professional

Download or read book The Professional written by Subroto Bagchi and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2009-09-10 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the new era, where every person's actions have the potential to have a global impact, we must redefine what it means to be a true professional.' By common definition, a professional is someone who possesses the skills and knowledge necessary to do a job—whether it's a top degree from a prestigious university or simply years of on-the-job training. For centuries, we have relied on this definition to help us determine who is capable and who is not, often assuming that the person with the most professional characteristics is the best one for the job. But every day we see examples of so-called professionals who do more harm than good: a few irresponsible bankers whose get-rich-quick schemes led to a global financial meltdown; a once-respected hedge fund manager charged with running the world's largest Ponzi scheme and robbing his clients of billions; a team of executives siphoning funds from their employees pension plans...the list goes on. All of these people had the qualities necessary to do their jobs well, but instead they chose to abuse and corrupt their professions for their own personal gain. So how can we weed out the best from the worst when the accepted standards are no longer enough, and when even the most powerful and respected among us cannot be trusted to behave responsibly or ethically? According to businessman and bestselling author Subroto Bagchi, the first step is to redefine what it means to be a professional. Today, it takes more than just aptitude—it takes a commitment to doing what's right, not only for your business, but for society as a whole. In a world where patients, clients, and customers can no longer completely trust the advice given to them, The Professional outlines the explicit and implicit code of conduct. The Professional is a must read for anyone looking for a little clarity in an increasingly blurry world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today's culture is overscheduled, typically characterized by short attention spans. We want to compress our lives into small, bite-sized pieces. Taking this approach with Jesus can draw us into a relationship that becomes the focus of our delight. Eventually, our desire for true life is whetted by brief meetings with Jesus. The longer we spend with Him, the more His divinely radioactive life infuses ours with the power of an endless life. The irony of the book title is that five minutes with Jesus is never enough. Five Minutes with Jesus presents a daily devotional that focuses on meeting with Jesus in ways that may be new to some Christians. Each day, author Randal Wiedemann takes a look at a different aspect of Jesus, the most discussed person in history. Wiedemann focuses on how to live the Christian faith with delight, depth, meaning, compassion, and joy. You will discover and be reminded that this is only possible when Jesus Christ lives in and through us. Five Minutes with Jesus is about spending quality time with God. For those who know Jesus, it is a joy to go to that secret inner place of the heart and meet with Him. For those who do not, there may be a vague sense of looking for something. You may not know what it is you are looking for, but when you find it, don't be surprised if it's Jesus.
