Book Farm Foods

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Farm Foods: Or the Rational Feeding of Farm Animals As long ago as the year 1868, when the first edition of my 'Practical System of Manuring' appeared, I had pledged myself to bring out a companion volume, in which the nutrition of the body and the economy of Farm Food-stuffs should be treated on similar lines. But at the same time I expressed my intention of reserving the work until the principles underlying its teaching had been placed upon a clear and systematic basis. The science of Agricultural Dietetics was then beginning to assume definite proportions, and from the great energy with which it was being prosecuted it seemed more than probable that in a very short time it would attain a position which would enable it to offer practice a firmer and sounder support for the acceptance of the latest scientific principles. In my opinion that time has now come. Thanks mainly to the rich harvest of results which has rewarded the zealous labours of the Munich School of Physiology, the general laws of animal nutrition, as well as those of flesh- and fat-formation in the animal body, are now clear and patent; the necessary investigations which were so admirably executed by Voit and Pettenkofer have attained a present conclusion. Book Productive Feeding of Farm Animals Classic Reprint

Download or read book Productive Feeding of Farm Animals Classic Reprint written by F. W. Woll and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Productive Feeding of Farm Animals The general interest in matters pertaining to the farm and farm life that has been evidenced in recent years is one of the wholesome signs of the times. Farm animals have shared in this increasing interest, and the love of fine stock, as well as the desire to surround the animals with conditions that will secure the best results for the care and labor bestowed upon them, has been a potent factor in the development of animal industry in this country during the last generation. For permanent and fruitful advance in agricultural matters, it is agreed that the boy must be interested; must learn about the realities and problems of farm life; must be taught how to meet these and how to adjust himself to changes in new conditions of farming that may arise. Hence we find that courses in agriculture are being introduced into more and more schools; the agricultural college no longer has a monopoly of teaching animal husbandry, field crops, horticulture, etc. County agricultural schools and agricultural high schools, as well as graded schools in a number of States, are giving their pupils an opportunity to study the underlying principles of farm operations. Until recently there were no text-books that met the needs of these different classes of students. This want is now, however, gradually being filled, and in some cases there is already a choice of carefully-prepared books, well adapted for the purpose intended. This volume has been prepared with a view to furnishing students in agricultural schools and colleges, as well as practical farmers, with a concise discussion of the main principles relating to the feeding of farm animals and of the various feeding stuffs available to our stockmen. So far as possible, different feeding practices for the various classes of farm animals have also been given and discussed, pointing the way to profitable methods of stock feeding under the variety of conditions existing on American farms. The treatment of this subject in text-book form presents peculiar difficulties. In view of the immense amount of research work that has accumulated and is being conducted and published every year, at public expense and otherwise, it would be easy to present a bewildering mass of detailed experimental evidence as to the merits of different feeds and methods of feeding. This would not, however, serve the purpose of either teacher or student. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Feeding Farm Animals It has seemed desirable, partly in order to avoid duplication, to discuss the use Of each of the principal feeds for the differ ent species and classes Of live stock rather than to devote separate chapters to the feeding of the different classes of farm animals. For example, under the discussion of corn, its use is given in the rations of growing cattle, colts, pigs, and lambs fattening cattle, hogs, and sheep breeding cattle, horses, hogs, and sheep dairy cows and work horses. In addition to the discussion of the nutritive value of feeds and rations, the author has given particular attention to their fertilizing values, a phase which is Often neglected both by the student and the stockman. The author is deeply indebted to Professor H. S. Grindley Dr. H. H. Mitchell, Professor W. C. Coffey, Professor H. P. Rusk, Professor J. L. Edmonds, Mr. W'. J. Carmichael, Mr. C. I. Download or read book First Principles of Feeding Farm Animals written by Charles William Burkett and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Principles of Feeding Farm Animals: A Practical Treatise on the Feeding of Farm Animals; Discussing the Fundamental Principles and Reviewing the Best Practices of Feeding for Largest Returns The fundamental principles of feeding animals are applicable to all parts of the country and to all parts of the world. For many years investigators have been at work on problems of nutrition and on interpreting the data obtained. As a result the student farmer has now at hand useful suggestions that will assist in handling the feeding problems of the farm to the best advantage. The man who feeds in a scientific manner is able not only to use his feeding stuffs more economically but he can obtain animal products more cheaply than can his neighbor who ignores the helps that science offers him. To these facts the author himself can testify. He not only has been a teacher of animal nutrition for many years, but has had a life-time experience also with the practical problems of feeding in feed-lots and stables. The volume herewith presented discusses the first principles of scientific feeding and aims to interpret them so as to be equally useful to student, stockman and farmer. In this presentation, the needs of the teacher of animal feeding have also been kept in mind at every step, the object being to set forth the several phases in pedagogical as well as utilitarian form. Book Feeds and Feeding Abridged

Download or read book Feeds and Feeding Abridged written by W. A. Henry and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Feeds and Feeding Abridged: The Essentials of the Feeding, Care, and Management of Farm, Animals, Including Poultry, Adapted and Condensed From Feeds and Feeding (Eighteenth Edition) "Feeds and Feeding," first published in March, 1898, was received with widespread favor by practical stockmen and by the teachers and students of animal husbandry in this country. Since this date seventeen editions have come from the press, and the book has been twice entirely rewritten to include new and important data. Many stockmen rely upon "Feeds and Feeding" as the guide in their feeding operations, and it is the standard text on stock feeding in practically all the agricultural colleges in this country. As Feeds and Feeding covers the feeding and care of each class of live stock in a comprehensive manner, it is of necessity a large book, containing much detailed information. With the rapid development of special agricultural courses in secondary schools and of short courses in the agricultural colleges, a demand arose for a simplified and condensed edition of the work. In response to this demand "Feeds and Feeding, Abridged," was prepared in 1917 by the undersigned, with the editorial aid of Professor W. A. Henry. The book was based chiefly upon Feeds and Feeding but the subject matter was so condensed and simplified as to adapt it for use in brief courses in stock feeding. Omitting topics of purely scientific interest, the most essential facts concerning animal nutrition and the practical feeding, care, and management of farm animals were presented in the simplest possible terms. The immediate and widespread demand for the book has been a pleasant surprise, five printings having already been required. This edition has been carefully revised to meet the changed conditions since the World War and to include important new information on the feeding of live stock. In most brief books on stock feeding the care and management of stock receive scant attention, but in "Feeds and Feeding, Abridged" these subjects, which are of the utmost practical importance, are fully treated. To aid the teacher and the student, each chapter closes with questions covering the subject matter, and 116 engravings illustrate some of the most important points. Since the subject of poultry feeding is commonly included in live stock feeding: in secondary schools, chapters have been added on the feeding and care of poultry. Altho thus covering a larger field, "Feeds and Feedings, Abridged" contains but half as much text matter as "Feeds and Feeding." Book The Nutrition of Farm Animals Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Nutrition of Farm Animals Classic Reprint written by Henry Prentiss Armsby and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 772 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Nutrition of Farm Animals The manner in which the subject of the nutrition of farm animals is presented to the student will naturally differ according to the ultimate end in view. If the prime purpose is to impart practical skill in the feeding of live stock, the study of the principles of nutrition is likely to be regarded as preliminary and to partake of the nature of an information course, and chief stress will be laid upon familiarity with the results of experience, particularly as related to the business aspects of the subject, and to the acquisition of practical skill. But while by no means disposed to minimize the significance of this aspect of the subject, the writer is nevertheless convinced that for the students of our agricultural colleges a somewhat different procedure is desirable. He believes that greater emphasis than they sometimes receive may wisely be laid upon the chemical and physiological laws which underlie the practice of feeding, both on account of their intrinsic importance and because the subject may thus be made a real collegiate discipline which shall contribute to the training as well as to the information of the student. Accordingly, the present volume attempts to deal primarily with the natural laws governing the nutrition of farm animals, as distinguished from the broader field of animal husbandry, and only secondarily with the specific details of practice. It seeks to avoid so far as may be mere dogmatic statements, and, although not attempting complete citation of literature even upon important points, to present the experimental evidence with sufficient fullness to indicate something of the limitations of present knowledge and of the opportunities for further investigation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Scientific Feeding of Animals Kellner's valuable little work so that it should be more in accordance with English practice, for I believe that in its original form the main points are quite clear and that where there are differences between German practice and our own they will perhaps serve to suggest methods worth a trial here. It is hoped that in this way the book will have something of the value of a visit to a foreign country, which is so beneficial in arousing a spirit of critical observation with regard to the practices in vogue there. As the author says in the Preface which he has kindly written for this edition, the main principles of feeding apply equally well in all countries possessing a moderate climate. That Professor Kellner has succeeded in giving to the world a book which was needed is proved by the fact that it is now appearing in seven languages, and the original is in its second edition. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Common Sense Treatment of Farm Animals Now when we apply this knowledge to the maintenance of health what do we find? Simply this - that a class of food that will enable a mother to make milk in fair quantity is a health preserving food. And when we feed a young and growing animal on a class of food which if it were fed to a nursing mother would not enable her to convert it into milk we are feeding that young animal a class of'food that will stunt its growth from a lack of prophr nourishment, overtax its digestive organs by taking into its stomach a surplus of bulky substance that weakens its digestion, and cause it to become an animal subject to intestinal disease on slight provocation. With insufficient food nutrients we have a weak muscular system, weak ligaments of the joints, and some. Times a bony structure lacking\in strength. Thus it is we find many animals of superior breeding that grow up weaklings. They were well born and started well in life on the milk of the mother. When such animal is a foal it grows a beauty so long as it remains with the mother, nurses her and learns to eat the class of food with her that she is manufacturing into milk for it. 'but what a change sometimes follows when this little beauty is weaned from its mother, and furnished the class of food its owner ignorantly feeds it. The same rule holds good regarding the raising of a calf or a-pig when weaned from the mother'and deprived of the mother's milk at a tender age. When the 'food given the young animal after weaning is of a character widely di erent from the analysis of milk trouble follows in the form of a weakened digestion, with the result of sudden death, or a worth less beast either as a work horse, a dairy cow, or a fattening animal. Book Scientific Feeding of the Domestic Animals Classic Reprint

Download or read book Scientific Feeding of the Domestic Animals Classic Reprint written by Martin Klimmer and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scientific Feeding of the Domestic Animals The translation of Klimmer's admirable work on Veterinary Hygiene and Scientific Feeding of Animals was undertaken at the suggestion of the publisher, Mr. Alexander Eger, with the hope and belief that in doing so the translator was rendering a real service. While some of the ideas and practices outlined in this work do not entirely fit into the economy of our own country and many changes and adaptations might have been made and served a useful purpose, the translator believed that a practically literal translation of the work as offered by the author would be not only more interesting to the American student but really more instructive. A comparison of the careful and painstaking methods of the German people and their continual efforts to economize, with our own characteristically wasteful practices, even though conditions prevailing with us are entirely different, cannot fail to have a wholesome influence. The translator has therefore confined himself to adding only here and there a few words of explanation which he believed necessary for clearness, either in the form of footnotes or remarks in parentheses in the text. The translator wishes to express his sincere thanks to his friend, Dr. J. R. Mohler, Chief of the United States Bureau of Animal Industry, for reading the manuscript before its submission to the printer making valuable suggestions in the arrangement of the text and adding instructive footnotes. Dr. Mohler's suggestion that the extensive references to technical literature which are appended to most chapters in the original German edition, be omitted, was also followed. It was mutually agreed that since this would be of value only to students familiar with the German language the original work of Dr. Klimmer would be available to them for such references. The translator wishes further to express his appreciation to the publisher, Mr. Eger, for his patience in overlooking the many annoying but unavoidable delays in preparing the manuscript and reading the final proof of this translation.
