Book Managing Beef Cow Production Using Gestational Oilseed Supplementation and Alternative Marketing Strategies for Mature Cull Cows

Download or read book Managing Beef Cow Production Using Gestational Oilseed Supplementation and Alternative Marketing Strategies for Mature Cull Cows written by Frances D. Loehr and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two experiments were conducted to evaluate alternative management practices to use within range beef production. The objective of experiment 1 was to evaluate the effects of prepartum alternative oilseed meal supplementation treatments on beef cow and calf performance. Ninety-nine pregnant cows were fed 3% added fat supplements consisting of soybean meal and cracked corn, safflower and soybean meals, or camelina meal for 56 days before parturition. Regardless of treatment, cows gained weight and body condition similarly during the feeding trial, and calf birth weight and calving ease were similar. Cows were rebred at similar rates, and death loss was not affected by treatment. Calf weight gain, feedlot performance and carcass traits were also similar. Therefore, the use of alternative oilseed meals shows similar results to traditional corn/soybean supplementation when fed to prepartum cows. The objective of experiment 2 was to determine the effects of three feeding strategies for cull cows on feed performance, carcass traits, and economics. Seventy-two cull cows were allotted to corn-based diets using hay or silage as the roughage source, or using a self-fed (limit) ration for a range finishing program for 90 days. Animals were slow to adapt to the limit feeding system, negatively impacting gains in the first month. Total gains were similar over the feeding period, as limit-fed animals had greater gains by the end of the trial. Limit cattle also consumed less feed and had more efficient gains than the other treatments. Carcass traits and value were similar across treatments. Limit animals had higher costs associated with their gain, indicating the importance of adapting animals to the feeding system to be used, and avoiding unnecessary feed.

Book Optimum Dairy Cow Replacement Policies to Maximize Income Over Feed Cost

Download or read book Optimum Dairy Cow Replacement Policies to Maximize Income Over Feed Cost written by Richard Walker Rundell and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Simulation of a dairy herd over a period of 15 years was used to examine replacement strategies among six operationally practical systems of culling cows which whould maximize income over feed costs. The strategies or criteria used to remove the lower ranking cows to a relatively constant herd size were: (1) Mature Equivalent (M.E.) milk production, (2) M.E. gross milk income, (3) actual milk production, (4) actual gross income, (5) income over feed cost, and (6) present value of expected gross income of cow and her subsequent replacements. Two each of prices of milk, fat differential, feed, and operational costs totaled 2 4 x 6 x 2 replications per trial or 192 replications. The following were treated as stochastic variables: (a) variation in milk production and milkfat percentage between cows and between lactations of the same cow, (b) chance of a calf being a heifer or bull, (c) chance of involuntary death or removal of cows and youngstock, and (d) chance of month of the year of involuntary removals. The mean and variance of the base herd approximated the average Michigan DHIA Holstein population in 1966. The sire value, approximating the best bulls used in A.I. was identical for any given year through all strategies and replications, but improved over time at the rate of 130 1b milk per year. Culls or cows removed because of low in each respective strategy were removed at the most profitable point to cull in their respective lactations by equating the milk income of the marginal month with the sun of the month's feed costs and monthly operational charges. Practical use of this simple method of determining when to cull cows within a lactation was demonstrated. A complete factorial design to analyze the generates data showed no significant differences between strategies under alternative combinations of prices in average income including salvage over feed cost per cow discounted to the present. This income was affected by the level of milk price (P
