Book Feed Situation Vol 237

Download or read book Feed Situation Vol 237 written by United States Economic Research Service and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-19 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Feed Situation, Vol. 237: February 1971 Farmers this year will plant about 4 million acres more to corn than they did in 1970 if they carry out their January 1 plans. More acreage is planned for most Corn Belt States; reductions are intended in the South. The outlook for 1971 corn production is clouded by the shortage of blight resistant seed and the possibility of blight again damaging the crop. Even with conditions for blight similar to those of 1970, but with more favorable weather in the Western Corn Belt, production on the planned acreage could be around 8 to 10% above the 1970 crop. But it probably would fall somewhat below the big crops of 1967 and 1969. Prospective acreages of other feed grains compared with 1970 are: grain sorghum, oats, and barley, With a more favorable growing season in 1971, especially for sorghums, the production of these grains would be well above last year's output. Thus, with corn blight damage about the same as in 1970, the total feed grain crop could rise around 10% above the short crop of 1970. The 1971 feed grain program announced in early December will have an important bearing on 1971 feed grain production. This program replaced acreage diversion with set-aside provisions giving farmers more flexibility in their operations. Since farmers will not receive payments for additional set-aside above the required minimum, the total acreage set-aside is expected to be well below the 37 million acres diverted in 1970. Total feed grain disappearance for 1970/ 71 is forecast at 2 to 4 million tons below last year's record volume. Domestic use during october-december was slightly above the record high in that quarter the previous year due primarily to the increased number of cattle and hogs being fed. But feed use is expected to be a little below a year earlier for the rest of the feeding year. Exports also ran a little ahead of the first quarter movement last season, but they too are expected to fall off this Spring and summer. Despite a small decline in total use will be well above the small 1970 crop, dropping carryover at the close of the year 12 to 15 million tons below the 48 million at the end of last season. Book A Handbook of Food Crime

Download or read book A Handbook of Food Crime written by Allison Gray and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2018-05-09 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Food today is over-corporatized and under-regulated. It is involved in many immoral, harmful, and illegal practices along production, distribution, and consumption systems. These problematic conditions have significant consequences on public health and well-being, nonhuman animals, and the environment, often simultaneously. In this insightful book, Gray and Hinch explore the phenomenon of food crime. Through discussions of food safety, food fraud, food insecurity, agricultural labour, livestock welfare, genetically modified foods, food sustainability, food waste, food policy, and food democracy, they problematize current food systems and criticize their underlying ideologies. Bringing together the best contemporary research in this area, they argue for the importance of thinking criminologically about food and propose radical solutions to the realities of unjust food systems.
