Book Feed Forward Volume Rendering Algorithm for Moderately Parallel MIMD Machines

Download or read book Feed Forward Volume Rendering Algorithm for Moderately Parallel MIMD Machines written by National Aeronautics and Space Adm Nasa and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2018-12-31 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Algorithms for direct volume rendering on parallel and vector processors are investigated. Volumes are transformed efficiently on parallel processors by dividing the data into slices and beams of voxels. Equal sized sets of slices along one axis are distributed to processors. Parallelism is achieved at two levels. Because each slice can be transformed independently of others, processors transform their assigned slices with no communication, thus providing maximum possible parallelism at the first level. Within each slice, consecutive beams are incrementally transformed using coherency in the transformation computation. Also, coherency across slices can be exploited to further enhance performance. This coherency yields the second level of parallelism through the use of the vector processing or pipelining. Other ongoing efforts include investigations into image reconstruction techniques, load balancing strategies, and improving performance. Book Parallel Volume Rendering on a Shared memory Multiprocessor

Download or read book Parallel Volume Rendering on a Shared memory Multiprocessor written by Judith A. Challinger and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "Volume rendering is a powerful, but computationally intensive, computer graphics technique for visualizing volumetric datasets. This paper presents results of investigations into techniques for volume rendering using parallel processing on a shared-memory, multiple- instruction, multiple-data (MIMD) architecture. In particular, two widely used algorithms for volume rendering, raycasting and projection, have been parallelized on a BBN TC2000, and their performance has been measured and analyzed. Preliminary results indicate that the raycasting approach to volume rendering has some advantages for parallelization on this type of architecture."

Book Efficient Feed foward Volume Rendering Techniques for Vector and Parallel Processors

Download or read book Efficient Feed foward Volume Rendering Techniques for Vector and Parallel Processors written by Raghu K. Machiraju and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "Volumes, represented by a 3D regular grid of voxels, are being increasingly employed in a variety of scientific visualization and computer graphics applications. However, rendering volumes reqires an overwhelming amount of processing power. In this paper we investigate efficient techniques for rendering semi-transparent volumes on vector and parallel processors. Parallelism inherent in a regular grid is obtained by decomposing the volume into geometric primitives called beams, slices, and slabs of voxels. By using the adjacency properties of voxels in beams and slices, efficient incremental transformation schemes are developed. These schemes are shown to be very suitable for fast execution on vector and pipelined processors. The slab decomposition of the volume allows the implementation of an efficient parallel feed-foward renderer which includes the splatting technique for image reconstruction and a back-to-front method for creating images. We report the implementation of this feed- forward volume renderer on a hierarchical shared memory machine, the IBM Power Visualization System (PVS). Experimental results are included to show the efficiency of the incremental transformation schemes and the performance of the parallel renderer on the IBM PVS."

Book A Data Distributed Parallel Algorithm for Ray traced Volume Rendering

Download or read book A Data Distributed Parallel Algorithm for Ray traced Volume Rendering written by Institute for Computer Applications in Science and Engineering and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "This paper presents a divide-and-conquer ray-traced volume rendering algorithm and a parallel image compositing method, along with their implementation and performance on the Connection Machine CM-5, and networked workstations. This algoritm distributes both the data and the computations to individual processing units to achieve fast, high- quality rendering of high-resolution data. The volume data, once distributed, is left intact. The processing nodes perform local raytracing of their subvolume concurrently. No communication between processing units is needed during this locally ray-tracing process. A subimage is generated by each processing unit and the final image is obtained by compositing subimages in the proper order, which can be determined a priori. Test results on both the CM-5 and a group of networked workstations demonstrate the practicality of our rendering algorithm and compositing method."

Book A Parallel Rendering Algorithm for MIMD Architectures

Download or read book A Parallel Rendering Algorithm for MIMD Architectures written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-06-28 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Applications such as animation and scientific visualization demand high performance rendering of complex three dimensional scenes. To deliver the necessary rendering rates, highly parallel hardware architectures are required. The challenge is then to design algorithms and software which effectively use the hardware parallelism. A rendering algorithm targeted to distributed memory MIMD architectures is described. For maximum performance, the algorithm exploits both object-level and pixel-level parallelism. The behavior of the algorithm is examined both analytically and experimentally. Its performance for large numbers of processors is found to be limited primarily by communication overheads. An experimental implementation for the Intel iPSC/860 shows increasing performance from 1 to 128 processors across a wide range of scene complexities. It is shown that minimal modifications to the algorithm will adapt it for use on shared memory architectures as well. Book A Data Distributed Parallel Algorithm for Ray traced Volume Rendering

Download or read book A Data Distributed Parallel Algorithm for Ray traced Volume Rendering written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents a divide-and-conquer ray-traced volume rendering algorithm and its implementation on networked workstations and a massively parallel computer, the Connection Machine CM-5. This algorithm distributes the data and the computational load to individual processing units to achieve fast, high-quality rendering of high-resolution data, even when only a modest amount of memory is available on each machine. The volume data, once distributed, is left intact. The processing nodes perform local ray-tracing of their subvolume concurrently. No communication between processing units is needed during this locally ray-tracing process. A subimage is generated by each processing unit and the final image is obtained by compositing subimages in the proper order, which can be determined a priori. Implementations and tests on a group of networked workstations and on the Thinking Machines CM-5 demonstrate the practicality of our algorithm and expose different performance tuning issues for each platform. We use data sets from medical imaging and computational fluid dynamics simulations in the study of this algorithm.
