Book excerpt: Born poor in Beverly, Massachusetts, in 1755, the young Israel Thorndike was a fisherman and ship owner who made a small fortune as a Revolutionary War privateer. Later he became a wealthy merchant, a delegate to the Massachusetts Ratification Convention and a director of the National Bank in Boston. A longtime Federalist legislator, he was highly regarded within the radical circles that contemplated secession during the Jefferson administration and the War of 1812. After the war, Thorndike concluded his multifaceted career as the leading venture capitalist financing the early Industrial Revolution. Sadly, his story is little known. Federalist Tycoon pulls Thorndike's life and career from the shadows and fully examines his impact on American economic development. Book The Legacy of Slavery at Harvard

Download or read book The Legacy of Slavery at Harvard written by The Presidential Committee on the Legacy of Slavery and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2022-09-27 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harvard’s searing and sobering indictment of its own long-standing relationship with chattel slavery and anti-Black discrimination. In recent years, scholars have documented extensive relationships between American higher education and slavery. The Legacy of Slavery at Harvard adds Harvard University to the long list of institutions, in the North and the South, entangled with slavery and its aftermath. The report, written by leading researchers from across the university, reveals hard truths about Harvard’s deep ties to Black and Indigenous bondage, scientific racism, segregation, and other forms of oppression. Between the university’s founding in 1636 and 1783, when slavery officially ended in Massachusetts, Harvard leaders, faculty, and staff enslaved at least seventy people, some of whom worked on campus, where they cared for students, faculty, and university presidents. Harvard also benefited financially and reputationally from donations by slaveholders, slave traders, and others whose fortunes depended on human chattel. Later, Harvard professors and the graduates they trained were leaders in so-called race science and eugenics, which promoted disinvestment in Black lives through forced sterilization, residential segregation, and segregation and discrimination in education. No institution of Harvard’s scale and longevity is a monolith. Harvard was also home to abolitionists and pioneering Black thinkers and activists such as W. E. B. Du Bois, Charles Hamilton Houston, and Eva Beatrice Dykes. In the late twentieth century, the university became a champion of racial diversity in education. Yet the past cannot help casting a long shadow on the present. Harvard’s motto, Veritas, inscribed on gates, doorways, and sculptures all over campus, is an exhortation to pursue truth. The Legacy of Slavery at Harvard advances that necessary quest.

Book excerpt: Salem was the second richest city in the country during the age of sail and in response to Jefferson’s silent revolution these New England Federalists dug three miles of tunnels to avoid paying his new custom duties and had developed immense fortunes with which came great political power within our nation. Among these were many who supported the Second Bank of the United States which Jackson crushed. These men had profited as they sold our nation’s financial control to the bankers of England. In response three men from town will plan the murder of a president to re-establish a new Federal bank. Along with this history are further tales of the tunnels, opium, the history of the man who engineered the economic cycles of our country, northern secession, and other stories of famous people, inventions, and events from Salem that helped shape our nation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Federalist Papers are a series of newspaper articles written by three men: Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay. In the course of these articles, they lay out the arguments of the necessity of a singular federal government that unifies the then brand new United States of America. For those not intimately familiar with the events leading up to the Federalist papers, please allow me to set the stage. In 1776, Independence was declared. Great Britain does not acknowledge this independence and instead declares war. This war lasts until 1783. By this point in time, a series of laws known as the Articles of Confederation are created by representatives of the Continental Congress. (See "The Life of President Thomas Jefferson" for a first hand account of these events.) These laws have been argued over and debated over to effectively allow each colony to become its own sovereign nation or "state." Each state prints its own currency, has its own separate navy and army, and acts as a separate nation that enacts its own laws. Even import tariffs and immigration are handled independently of each other. This is because it is how each colony had already operated for several hundred years. The modern reader will see the inherent flaws in this model and will question why. They were completely independent of each other and subject only to the English crown and the parliament, but not to each other. These Federalist Papers, or Federalist Articles, frame the proposed arguments for a new constitution and a new form of government (the federal government) which will unify these independent nations under a unified government, as one singular country. In 1789, six years after the end of hostilities, the new constitution (mostly written by James Madison) is adopted. The new form of government comes alive, and George Washington is elected as the First President of the United States of America. These are the arguments that led to these events...

Book The War on History

Download or read book The War on History written by Jarrett Stepman and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2019-10-01 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The War on Our History Confederate memorials toppled . . . Columbus statues attacked with red paint. They started with slave-owning Confederate generals, but they’re not stopping there. The vandals are only pretending to care about the character of particular American heroes. In reality, they hate what those heroes represent: the truths asserted in the Declaration of Independence and embodied in the Constitution. And they are bent on taking America down and replacing our free society with a socialist utopia. All that stands in their way is Americans’ reverence for our history of freedom. Which is why that history simply has to go. Now, Jarrett Stepman, editor at The Daily Signal and host of Right Side of History, exposes the true aims of the war on our history: The war on America: World history is full of conquests and suffering indigenous peoples. Why target Christopher Columbus? What they really want to tear down is America. The war on Thanksgiving: World history is full of colonists. Why target the Pilgrims? What they really want to tear down is American freedom and prosperity. The war on the Founding: World history is full of slavery. Why target Thomas Jefferson? What they really want to tear down are the rights endowed by our Creator. The war on the common man: World history is full of victorious generals and populist politicians. Why target Andrew Jackson? What they really want to tear down is democracy. The war on the South: World history is full of civil strife. Why target Confederate heroes like Robert E. Lee? What they really want to tear down is respect for America’s past and the reconciliation that renewed our Union. The war on patriotism: World history is full of national pride. Why target Teddy Roosevelt? What they really want to tear down is the idea of American greatness. The war on the American century: World history is full of bloody wars. What they really want to tear down is America’s defeat of totalitarianism. If America is to survive this assault, we must rally to the defense of our illustrious history. The War on History is the battle plan.

Book Conservative Philanthropies and Organizations Shaping U S Educational Policy and Practice

Download or read book Conservative Philanthropies and Organizations Shaping U S Educational Policy and Practice written by Kathleen deMarrais and published by Myers Education Press. This book was released on 2020-09-10 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American public education has been under assault for the last few decades as a “broken” system that needs a complete overhaul. In large part, these opinions are offered by people and organizations who know little about schools. But who are these influencers? This book is about conservative philanthropies, the organizations and individuals within their networks, and the strategies they use to shape educational policy and practice in K-12 and higher education. Each chapter examines a philanthropy, philanthropic network, or corporation focused on pushing an agenda of individualism, privatization, and conservative ideologies. Based in extensive research, including the tax filings of specific philanthropic foundations, the authors demonstrate how the philanthropic elite work within federal, state, and local governmental contexts to influence policy and practice. Within a global context of increasing wealth inequality, the authors question the motivations of these privileged few to withhold tax dollars from the US treasury where duly elected representatives can determine how tax dollars are used to benefit society. By allowing these philanthropic organizations tax exemptions under the guise of assumed benevolence, are citizens giving up their ability to hold these organizations accountable for how the money is spent? This book, aimed at a general audience of educators, provides the in-depth knowledge necessary to understand and resist private control of public policies and institutions.
