Book Scientific Integrity Policies

Download or read book Scientific Integrity Policies written by United States. Government Accountability Office and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2007, the America COMPETES Act required the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) to take actions to enhance the integrity of federal scientific research. In 2010, OSTP provided guidance to federal agencies on developing scientific integrity policies. The guidance states that, among other things, agencies are to ensure that political appointees should not suppress or alter scientific findings. This report examines, among other things, the extent to which selected agencies (1) have taken actions to achieve the objectives of their scientific integrity policies and (2) have procedures for identifying and addressing alleged violations of their scientific integrity policies. GAO is making 10 recommendations to six agencies to address specific issues related to educating staff, providing oversight, monitoring and evaluating policy implementation, and developing procedures to identify and address policy violations.

This book was released on 2018-01-13 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The integrity of knowledge that emerges from research is based on individual and collective adherence to core values of objectivity, honesty, openness, fairness, accountability, and stewardship. Integrity in science means that the organizations in which research is conducted encourage those involved to exemplify these values in every step of the research process. Understanding the dynamics that support â€" or distort â€" practices that uphold the integrity of research by all participants ensures that the research enterprise advances knowledge. The 1992 report Responsible Science: Ensuring the Integrity of the Research Process evaluated issues related to scientific responsibility and the conduct of research. It provided a valuable service in describing and analyzing a very complicated set of issues, and has served as a crucial basis for thinking about research integrity for more than two decades. However, as experience has accumulated with various forms of research misconduct, detrimental research practices, and other forms of misconduct, as subsequent empirical research has revealed more about the nature of scientific misconduct, and because technological and social changes have altered the environment in which science is conducted, it is clear that the framework established more than two decades ago needs to be updated. Responsible Science served as a valuable benchmark to set the context for this most recent analysis and to help guide the committee's thought process. Fostering Integrity in Research identifies best practices in research and recommends practical options for discouraging and addressing research misconduct and detrimental research practices.

EPA¿s Integrated Risk Info. System (IRIS) program is critical in developing the agency¿s scientific positions on the potential health effects of exposure to toxic chemicals. EPA¿s Science Advisory Board convenes panels to review EPA¿s scientific assessments. This testimony highlights scientific integrity issues re: (1) the IRIS assessment process; and (2) fed. advisory committee policies and procedures. Illustrations.

S. House of Representatives, One Hundred Fourth Congress, First Session, September 20, 1995 I am Congressman Dana Rohrabacher, Chairman of the Commit tee. On February 3, 1992, then-senator Al Gore told the United States Senate that, and I quote, If atmospheric conditions con tinne as they are for a few weeks, there could be an ozone hole above heavily-populated areas in the northern hemisphere. There could well be an ozone hole above Kennebunkport. And I remember that time period very well because I remember the Senator coming to one of the hearings that we had for the science hearings with many cameras in tow and newsmen in tow, in which he made the same prediction.
