Book Power Choice and Vulnerability

Download or read book Power Choice and Vulnerability written by Peter Winchester and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-23 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural disasters make dramatic reading. Every year, some area of the world is devastated by a disaster, with enormous consequent loss of life and disruption to livelihoods. What can be done to alleviate this? Why are such disasters so lethal? Why do people expose themselves to such hazards? Do mitigation programmes help? What effect does aid really have on the areas that receive it? By examining one particular cyclone-prone area of Southern India in great detail over a 10-year period Peter Winchester has come up with some perceptive answers to the questions. In particular, he formulates a set of five 'golden rules' for disaster management. The book will provide valuable and thought-provoking reading for anyone involved with disaster management, and will be essential for all those whose work involves aid or development in disaster-prone areas.

Book Impact evaluation of the Home Grown School Feeding and Conservation Agriculture Scale up programmes in Zambia

Download or read book Impact evaluation of the Home Grown School Feeding and Conservation Agriculture Scale up programmes in Zambia written by Prifti, E., Grinspun, A. and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2021-05-06 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This impact evaluation report quantifies the impacts of Zambia’s Home Grown School Feeding (HGSF) programme – one of the country’s biggest social protection programmes – and the Conservation Agriculture Scale Up (CASU) project, both alone and in combination with each other. The report looks at how the programmes affected farm production and other livelihoods, the food security situation of the household and of school-going children and the educational outcomes of the latter. The report concludes that each programme or programme component considered in isolation meets their strictly defined objectives, but their combination leads to unintended conflicting influence on certain outcomes, thus highlighting the need for increased coherence between programmes. The household and community surveys for the evaluation of the programmes took place between October 2017 and January 2018. The total sample size is 3 636 households and a total of 72 community interviews were also conducted.

Book Social Safety Nets and Poverty Reduction in Developing Countries

Download or read book Social Safety Nets and Poverty Reduction in Developing Countries written by Jannatul Ferdous and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-12-05 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the origins, current state, and fundamental value of social safety nets in developing countries, as well as their effectiveness in these settings. Social safety net programs (SSNPs) are critical because they keep those who are already vulnerable from falling deeper into poverty. Analysing how social safety nets benefit the most disadvantaged and marginalized members of society by allowing those in need to become financially stable, more resilient, and open up more opportunities for themselves, this book shows that social safety nets (SSNs) are a collection of social services designed to protect people from the effects of economic and emotional hardship. Showing that the purpose of the safety net is not to provide permanent financial security, but rather to provide temporary financial security during periodic shocks and how this applies in South Asia and also in parts of Africa, this book will be of interest to all scholars and students of social policy, sociology, social work, and Global South politics more generally.
