Book Federal Land Management Agencies

Download or read book Federal Land Management Agencies written by Pamela Baldwin and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2005 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The federal government owns 655 million acres (29%) of the nearly 2.3 billion acres of land in the United States. Four agencies administer 628 million acres (96%) of this land: the Forest Service in the Department of Agriculture, The Bureau of Land Management, Fish and Wildlife Service, and National Park Service, all in the Department of the Interior. The majority of these lands are in the West. They generate revenues for the US Treasury, some of which are shared with states and localities. These agencies receive funding from annual appropriations laws, and from trust funds and special accounts (including the Land and Water Conservation Fund). The lands administered by the four agencies are managed for a variety of purposes, primarily related to conservation, preservation, and development of natural resources. Yet, each of these agencies has distinct responsibilities for the lands and resource it administers. This new book provides an overview of how federal lands and resources are managed, the agencies that manage the lands, the authorities under which these lands are managed, and some of the issues associated with federal land management. The book is divided into nine chapters. In the conclusion of the book, is an appendix of acronyms used in the text, and another defining selected terms used in the report.

This book was released on 1970 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The purpose of this study is to provide a comprehensive description and analysis of the existing system of laws, legislative policies and practices providing for the enlargement, adjustment or diminution of the federal land base through either direct acquisitions or exchanges. The study concentrates upon those federal agencies whose land acquisition activities most directly relate to the federal lands studied by the Public Land Law Review Commission, namely, the Bureau of Land Management, the National Park Service, the Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife, and the Forest Service. ... The study reveals that acquisitions are carried out under a myriad of different statutes, enacted at widely different times under diverse circumstances with little uniformity of authority or results among the agencies"--Page S-1.

Download or read book Natural Resources and Environment written by U S Government Accountability Office (G and published by BiblioGov. This book was released on 2013-07 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Federal Government has a backlog of over 20,000 court cases in which it seeks to acquire by condemnation private land for public use. At the close of fiscal year 1978, the land in question was appraised at $481 million. However, actual acquisition costs will be much higher because of administrative costs, awards or settlements in excess of government appraisals, and long delays in court. The large caseload arises from the many sizable land acquisition programs for such purposes as recreation, environmental and wildlife protection, civil and military works, and various other programs authorized by Congress. Moreover, sharply rising real estate prices and administrative expenses make it particularly desirable to expedite acquisitions. A major problem associated with the heavy caseload is the understaffing in U.S. Attorneys' offices, the Department of Justice's Land Acquisition Section, and land acquisition agencies. In 1978, the equivalent of only 37 full-time Assistant U.S. Attorneys were assigned to condemnation cases, and most of them on a part-time basis. To alleviate this and other problems associated with the heavy caseload, many agencies are focusing on solutions to the manpower shortages and other contributing factors. While the proposed remedial steps are sound, the overall goal, to shorten the average processing time for condemnation cases to 1 year, may be overly optimistic.
