Download or read book Making and Moving Knowledge written by John Sutton Lutz and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2008 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has long been acknowledged that research does not directly translate into knowledge nor does knowledge necessarily, or even often, translate into wisdom. Whether the immediate challenge is global warming, epidemic disease, poverty, environmental degradation, or social fragmentation, our research efforts are all wasted if we cannot devise processes to create and transfer knowledge to policy makers, interested groups and ordinary people in a manner that is efficient and understandable. How we maximize the impact of the research that scholars do and how to combine that with knowledge already extant in "lay" or "local" communities, are key issues in a world with scarce research resources and numerous social and scientific conflicts.Making and Moving Knowledge focuses directly on how knowledge is created, transferred and used and perhaps most important, how it is blocked and atrophies. It treats knowledge generated by universities and governments alongside "traditional" and practical knowledge generated in coastal aboriginal and non-aboriginal communities and looks at how the different kinds flow in different directions. The chapters are theoretical, methodological, and applied as the authors model their commitment to knowledge transfer in their work with community, academics and policy makers.

This book was released on 1993-01-01 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers the first comprehensive overview of community development for the Atlantic Provinces. The authors take a collaborative approach to their research question and contribute more than just a survey on urban development. They also create a framework for understanding the relationship between the development of towns and cities in Atlantic Canada and in other parts of the country.

Book excerpt: The success of the previous Conferences on Energy from Biomass, held in Brighton 1980and Berlin 1982, and the continued interest among European countries, encouraged theCommission of the European Communities to organise the third conference on this areaof energy production. It brought together about 500 experts from many countries thuspresenting an international forum for discussion of the most recent advances in researchand development, manufacture and industrial applications.
Download or read book Contemporary Apprenticeship written by Alison Fuller and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-11 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the world, people understand the meaning of 'apprenticeship'. As a model of learning and skill formation, apprenticeship has adapted over the years to reflect changes in work, in technology, and in the types of knowledge that underpin occupational expertise. Apprenticeship serves the needs of government, as well as employers, individuals and society more generally. These needs have always co-existed in dynamic tension. This book explores the contemporary state of apprenticeship in Europe, the United States, Canada, and Ghana. The chapters present perspectives from leading researchers in the field, showing how apprenticeship is evolving and changing in every country (crossing boundaries of age, sector and levels of skill and knowledge) and examining the ability of apprenticeship to facilitate both vertical progression – particularly to higher education – and horizontal progression between jobs and sectors. As such, apprenticeship remains at the core of debates about vocational learning and the nature of expertise. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Vocational Education and Training.

Download or read book Newfoundland Modern written by Robert Mellin and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2011-10-17 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In over 220 drawings and photographs, Robert Mellin presents the development of architecture in the decades immediately following Newfoundland's 1949 union with Canada. Newfoundland's wholehearted embrace of modern architecture in this era affected planning as well as the design of cultural facilities, commercial and public buildings, housing, recreation, educational facilities, and places of worship, and Premier Joseph Smallwood often relied on modern architecture to demonstrate the progress made by his administration. Mellin explores the links between Smallwood and modern architecture, revealing how Smallwood guided the development of numerous architectural projects. He also looks at the work of two innovative local architects, Frederick A. Colbourne and Angus J. Campbell, showing how their architecture was influenced by their life-long interest in art. The first comprehensive work on an important period of architectural development in urban and rural Newfoundland, Newfoundland Modern complements Mellin's award-winning book on the outport of Tilting, Fogo Island.
Download or read book Ecology behaviour and conservation of the charrs genus Salvelinus written by Pierre Magnan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Salvelinus species are one of the most thoroughly studied groups of fishes. Many reasons explain this intense interest in charr biology. Charrs have a Holarctic distribution encompassing many Asian, North American, and European countries and occupy diverse marine and freshwater environments. Furthermore, the current distribution of charr includes areas that were directly influenced by climate and topographic change associated with the many Pleistocene glaciations. Undoubtedly, these conditions have promoted much of the tremendous morphological, ecological, and genetic variability and plasticity within Salvelinus species and they make charr very good models to study evolutionary processes 'in action'. Many charr species also exhibit demographic characteristics such as slow growth, late maturity, and life in extreme environments, that may increase their susceptibility to extinction from habitat changes and overexploitation, especially in depauperate aquatic habitats. This vulnerability makes understanding their biology of great relevance to biodiversity and conservation. Finally, charr are of great cultural, commercial, and recreational significance to many communities, and their intimate linkage with human societies has stimulated much interest in this enigmatic genus. This volume comprises a selection of papers presented at the fourth International Charr Symposium held in Trois-Rivières (Québec, Canada), from 26 June to 1 July 2000. It includes 31 papers on ecological interactions and behaviour, trophic polymorphism, movement and migration, ecophysiology and evolutionary genetics, ecological parasitology, environmental stress and conservation. These studies cannot cover all recent developments in the ecology, behaviour and conservation of Salvelinus species, but collecting them into a special volume should bring attention to current research on this important genus and stimulate further work on Salvelinus species.
