Book excerpt: We are studying the isotope dilution gamma-ray spectrometry (IDGS) technique for the simultaneous measurements of concentrations and isotopic compositions for both plutonium and uranium in spent-fuel dissolver solutions at a reprocessing plant. Previous experiments have demonstrated that the IDGS technique can determine the elemental concentrations and isotopic compositions of plutonium in dissolver solutions. The chemical separation and recovery methods for just plutonium were ion-exchange techniques using anion exchange resin beads and filter papers. To keep both plutonium and uranium in the sample for simultaneous measurements, a new sample preparation method is being studied and developed: extraction chromatography. The technique uses U/TEVA·Spec resin to separate fission products and recover both uranium and plutonium in the resin from dissolver solutions for measurements by high-resolution gamma-ray spectrometry.

Book excerpt: The isotope dilution gamma-ray spectrometry (IDGS) technique has been demonstrated for simultaneously measuring concentrations and isotopic compositions of plutonium in spent-fuel input dissolver solutions. For timely analyzing nuclear materials on the purpose of material accountancy and quality control/assurance, we have performed a feasibility study to implement the IDGS for measuring mixed plutonium-uranium oxide (MOX) samples at the Plutonium Fuel Center (PFC) of Japan Nuclear Cycle Development Institute (JNC). Proof-of-principle experiments and analysis have been conducted for developing simultaneous plutonium and uranium measurements in MOX samples with wide variation of Pu/U ratios including powder, pellets and process scraps from the MOX fuel fabrication plant at PFC. We have shown that FRAM can be used with the IDGS technique to simultaneously determine plutonium and uranium isotopic compositions and concentrations in MOX samples at PFC, JNC. The uncertainties of the results are somewhat large due to weak statistics. If better statistics are obtained by either using more plutonium in the measurements, acquire the data for longer time, or using higher efficiency detector then the results can be better. The accuracy of the results can also be improved by a factor of 2-3 by using the generalized IDGS technique instead of this traditional IDGS.

Book excerpt: We have studied the improvement in simultaneous measurements of concentrations and isotopic compositions for plutonium in input spent-fuel dissolver solutions at a reprocessing plant by isotope dilution gamma-ray spectrometry (IDGS) technique. The IDGS technique uses the high-resolution low-energy gamma-ray spectrometry and isotope dilution method. The dissolver solutions are subsequently measured using high-resolution gamma-ray spectrometry following the fission product separations by extraction chromatography using U/TEVA·Spec resins. The improved method can simplify the separation procedure and save more than 2 hours in sample preparation time. The results of plutonium concentrations and isotopic compositions of dissolver solutions analyzed by IDGS agree very well with those obtained by traditional isotope dilution mass spectrometry. The rapid and accurate IDGS technique with the improved separation method could provide a timely, less expensive, and simpler on-site verification method for the input accountability measurements.
