Book Ground Layers in European Painting 1550 1750

Download or read book Ground Layers in European Painting 1550 1750 written by Anne Haack Christensen and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the papers in this volume were presented at the CATS international technical art history conference in June 2019 titled Mobility Creates Masters - Discovering Artists' Grounds 1550-1700, which explored the introduction of, and change to, the colored ground layers in European paintings form the Early Modern period. The title of the conference stemmed from the desire to instigate new research projects within the topic of the influence of artists' mobility on material choices and techniques related to the preparation of paintings. As well as contributions presented at the conference, this volume includes additional papers from recent research exploring the same topic. The volume begins with several studies on the documentation of grounds. The contributions are then arranged according to the country in which the painter was active, from southern Europe moving northwards. The lavishly illustrated contributions in this volume deal with the above questions and shed light on different methods of preparing painting supports, the purpose of preparatory layers, materials used in different countries and influence of shifts in fashion or availability of materials on ground layers. This fifth CATS Proceedings will be of interest to scholars and students, and museum professionals including curators, conservators, art historians and conservation scientists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This cultural journey down memory lane showcases how major Western figures, events, and places have been portrayed in folk legends, art, literature, and popular culture. Ever since the days of the 49ers and George Armstrong Custer, the Old West has been America's most potent source of legend. But it is sometimes hard to separate fact from fiction. Did you know, for example, that Annie Oakley was a talented marksman who shot an estimated 40,000 rounds per year while practicing and performing for Buffalo Bill Cody's Wild West Show in the late l800s? Or that many interpreters believe that The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is not just a fairy tale, but also a Populist allegory? These are just two of the folk legends dissected and examined in this veritable cultural geography. The volume covers everything from billionaire Howard Hughes and composer Aaron Copeland to Aztlan (the legendary first city of the Aztecs) and Area 51, the top-secret U.S. Air Force base at Groom Lake, Nevada, that has fascinated UFO and conspiracy buffs.

Book Son of the Wilderness The Life of John Muir

Download or read book Son of the Wilderness The Life of John Muir written by Linnie Marsh Wolfe and published by Plunkett Lake Press. This book was released on 2019-07-31 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1945, this biography won the Pulitzer Prize in 1946. Its author worked for twenty-two years on John Muir, including as secretary of the John Muir Association and as editor of Muir’s unpublished papers. She interviewed many family members and people who knew and worked with John Muir to produce this account of Muir’s life. She recounts Muir’s Scottish origins, his early years in the harsh Wisconsin wilderness, his remarkable mechanical aptitude and interest in botany and geology at the University of Wisconsin in Madison where he spent two and a half years before traveling to the Canadian wilderness, and then to California where he spent most of his life. “[A] well-balanced, informative and rewarding biography.” — Kirkus Reviews “Into this biography of John Muir, Mrs. Wolfe has packed an amazing amount of factual information which she has illuminated with a sober critical judgment that gives us a convincing portrait of the whole man.” — Francis P. Farquhar, Pacific Historical Review “Linnie Marsh Wolfe almost singlehandedly restored John Muir to the respectability and stature he always deserved... [Son of the Wilderness] should be on the reference shelves of anyone seriously interested in American environmental history.” — John Opie, Environmental History Review “[A]n interesting personal biography... [Wolfe] creates Muir as a living personality — mystical but athletic, enthusiastic about nature but socially abrupt — a sort of middle-aged Thoreau.” — Alexander Kern, Journal of American History “By immersing herself in Muir’s life, for example, by soaking in his correspondence and journals, [Wolfe] was able to craft what amounts to a first-person narrative, the autobiography he never wrote for himself.” — Char Miller, John Muir Newsletter
